CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

We need to be able to build more immersive / better castles.
The personal castle mod is sweet... shame it's impossible to use with achievements.

Aztec Pyramids also?

Sorry if this came up before but what about "monuments" like Genghis Khans skull-pyramids of slaughtered villagers? They could be temporary but give huge morale damage to invading armies and give lots of prestige

Thank you for all your questions everyone!

I'll still be around a bit more today with some more answers but it will slow down from now!
Thank you for taking the time to be so proactive in responding to the questions! I think I've said it before, but it's this strong communication that makes Paradox such a good company.

I think it would be great if you could rebuild or repair ancient wonders! If you can recreate the hanging gardens, the colossus in Rhodes, temple of Zeus, repair the great pyramids, etc!

It would be awesome to be able to « store » our artefact inside a Cathedral or build the cathedral around an existing artefact in our possession which will grant the building some bonus.

We're not reworking holdings, the wonders will exist in their own space and each province will have space for one wonder.

So like hospitals then?

I'm sure these were already suggested in the thread, but...
_Being able to build tower wonders and such as a Patrician family. Powerful families in Italian communes like to show off their wealth by building taller and taller towers, usually resulting in dozens of towers in the biggest cities, like in Bologna or San Gimignano https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towers_of_Bologna
_Triumphal Arcs as a possible wonder for a restored Roman religion ruler
_This is not really related to wonders, but playable inland republics and Comuni that use banking, instead of trade, in order to spread influence and expand, such as Florence or Siena did (I'm sure there were more examples but I'm only moderately knowledgeable about the Italian landscape of the time)

Hmm, a Roman leader could rebuild the Forums, or maybe a particularly ambitious/greedy/proud (and wealthy) one could make his own Domus Aurea (ancient palace built by Nero, I was so decadent that it has gemstoned embedded on the walls as mosaic decoration).

A Catholic Italian ruler could make the Duomo of Firenze (the structure itself was built on the XI century). On the same note, albeit quite unrelated, we could use some different-colored buildings models for southern European/Mediterraneans (Italians, Greeks, Romans, Iberians) Maybe a simple recolor of the gray ones into white walled/red roofed ones?

Adding canals is possible, however changing the map after the game has started is pretty difficult, so not sure we would do them justice.

I really think that it would be worth it for gameplay even if not represented on the map.

And in a related but slightly not topic. I also think that portages should be a thing, and allowing us to maybe make a costly portage over certain areas could be another answer.

Mystical wonder maybe? Something like a whispering well, rumored to be bottomless, built on a confluence of laylines that randomly grants wide ranging de/buffs like increased prosperity, wealth, troop morale, traits to your kids, prevents plagues from entering but also sometimes burps them up, attracts mysterious high skilled courtiers that are either loyal servants or prone to murderous behavior. And with little events like a suicidal family member throwing themselves in (or a child falling in, or an insane person falling in etc) and maybe coming back a few years later without the bad trait and better stats ooooh ooh and then maybe a rare chance for hearing a voice in your dreams calling you to the well and if you go the voice offers you a covenant: power (ie a nice stat boost) but in say 20 years it will call you home (ie you'll jump down the well).

Please, add monasteries and abbots!

Well, it's quite obvious but I think rebuilding the Colosseum would be a great thing as a wonder for a hellenistic roman empire (since christians don't like people slaughtering each other for fun).
