CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Uh.... I hope I didn't miss this but, The Great Viking Church is an idea....

maybe something similar, reformed Germanic Religion would try to have great buildings or alters or buildings to try and compete with the Cathedrals of Catholics?

One easy thing is for any monument that is captured by Muslims is add minarets to them? Like they did in Constantinople? Maybe something with the Vikings to converted lands?

I am enjoying the other ideas as well, still this looks to be a fun update.

Sadly the devs are Swedish, not Norwegian, so we can only hope that a stave church of some kind makes it in.

All reformed religions should be able to build great temples. Even if pagans and non-standard religions like Zoroastrians and Taoists only get generic temples, they should get something and it should give comparable if not the same benefits as Cathedrals, Grand Mosques, etc.

Natural wonders like the white cliffs of dover certain sites on some major rivers like the ganges would be cool. They may have unique upgrades if you have the right holdings in that province, like a castle at dover or hindu temples at the ganges

This looks absolutely beautiful. I'm super stoked to see this happen.

Calling it early. We getting universities in this dlc/expansion.

This feels a bit Civ. Not complaining.

Building wonders sounds cool.

Just some questions and suggestions:

1. Will AI rulers (independent or vassal) start building a new wonders or continue building an existing one? Especially those with lots of money like Lord Mayor, Grand Mayor and Prince Mayor...

2. As "All wonders will be tied to a province", if a vassal count holds the province, while the bonus income goes into his pocket, will his liege & top liege duke / king / emperor also receive prestige / piety / technology points generated?

3. Will there be any event-only wonders? Like finding an ancient ruin / city / temple in the jungle / on the mountain or cliff or after flooding, (depend on traits & attributes) you can choose to rebuild it as a wonder (leave a base for you to build it when you have money) / study for technology points / dismantle it for timed build time build cost modifier.

I'm going to laugh if the pyramids build up Kemetism DLC hype and it turns out the art in the first post is a placeholder and they're actually Mesoamerican pyramids for Sunset Invasion Aztecs instead.

Tossing my two cents in; maybe places like Jerusalem, Rome, and Constantinople could have special wonders to represent the sheer density of such great works. That way, Jerusalem could have a major place of worship for each religion represented without having to tear down one or the other. (Unless you want to, of course.)

Will major Universities be available wonders?

Also, Medieval castles were often bright colours like green or pink or blue.
Will there be options for wonders having type era suitable paint jobs?

I hope you would not forget to rework jewish Third Tempe as wonder...

in game would be different from a cathedral? or something like unique graphic variant?

- its up to devs to decide if it would or not be different to Cathedral wonder. My concern is primarily with Third Temple becoming a proper wonder like it should be. Currently you just press a button and after some time you just get event - bla bla bla we have built Third Temple heres your prestige and piety. I dont think i should describe how lame is that. New wonder feature should finally amend that.

Pyramids will just be one of many wonders and will be available to build only in specific circumstances.
Can't wait to build the Great Pyramids of Scotland! :D

We're not reworking holdings, the wonders will exist in their own space and each province will have space for one wonder.
That's going to be a shame if someone wants to rebuild Alexandria's Great Library and Lighthouse. :(

So Egyptian Paganism is pretty much confirmed? Man, soon there will only be Celtic left for the Ancient Religions mod!
People are already speculating Stonehenge as a wonder and it hasn't been denied yet. We could get Celtic too if Kemetic is in (which I sadly doubt).

I assume these Wonders are... more than simply universities you actually already can build in game.

No offense to Universities tough.

The universities we can build in-game are more like schools though, in that they are eventually built in every city holding, and aren't all that expensive. Historically there were far fewer universities. Considering cathedrals are wonders, universities could fit well, since they were about as rare as cathedrals.

I agree with the general idea. Jerusalem should have the exception where the Dome of the Rock should be destroyed in the process of building the Third Temple.

EDIT: The Dome of the Rock is built on the site of the Second Temple, there should definitely be an option for a resurgent Isreal to destroy it before building the Third Temple on the foundation. This is not the era of religious tolerance.

I don't have the time to read all the answers to this post, so I hope you will forgive me if any of the ideas below were already suggested :
  1. A huge castle on a mountain, whether it will be used as a palace (like Neuschwanstein) or as a military center (like La Mothe-en-Bassigny in its time).
  2. Monuments carved into the rock of a mountain (like Petra, Abou Simbel or Qasr al-Farid).
  3. Gargantuan stavkirke for reformed germanic.
  4. Sunset invaders could build "Templo Mayor-ish" monuments.
  5. Byzantium could build a very large and special adiministration palace, due to its roman legacy and bureaucratic tradition.
  6. A chinese advisor could unlock some special wonders, such as a bingma yong or a forbidden city but in the character's own culture flavour.
  7. A more important idea imo (since I try to create a mod about it ^^), would be to build a religious wonder linked to the foundation of a new and custom religious order. It could be a warrior order (e.g. Knights of Malta) or something more cultural (like the Church of lady Mary of Zion and its Ark of the Covenant or something more generic with a huge library and monks, etc...).
  8. Since some pagans are worshipping nature, I think it could be great to allow pagans to "build" some sacred land or sacred areas. (like a forbidden forest for, let's say, a suomenusko or a sacred plateau for a tengrist, just examples...).
Another example : during my travels, I met pygmies in Africa, and I saw that they used some specific trees as temples : they used a natural (or not ?) hole in a huge trunk from which a "shaman" talked to other men and women, answered their question, etc... They also believed that they had to touch the sacred tree with their hands during their prayers to "make the prayer count". What I want to say here is that some people consider very simple things as monuments, and sacred trees, caves or stones could be added as a non-reformed cheap priced wonders with proportional bonuses.
  9. Reworking the Saint's tombstone mechs could be to add a wonder to a saint instead of the small building in the current version. Same idea for your bloodline : a wonder to honour a major ancestor (like the one dedicated to Temujin in Hohhot).
I may add some ideas later, but I think that these ideas above could be nice !
