CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

The Theodosian Walls of Constantinople can finally have a proper category to sit in in-game. I like this even if it's only so that doesn't have a bizarre "no proper categorization" feature. But also I like it in general, it'll be fun.

Will there be any special acknowledgement if you finish a cathedral on a catholic holy site (or other mega-church equivalent on your religion's holy site)? There should be, that should cause...something to happen.

Perhaps consider doing a few wonders based on government types? For example, Merchant Republics could get access to a wonder that increases trade value, feudal lords could get one similar in theme to the Theodosian Walls which would increase fort levels, etc.

Also consider having wonders specific to religions, as well. You shouldn't have every wonder available to every character. That would be kind of boring, IMO.

Wonders as buildings are great. Even more so if they are visible on the map.
But I am mainly interested about Fortresses? What gameplay purpose will they serve?
Are we finally getting castle walls on the map?

We've been thinking about this but unsure what it will do, maybe unlock a special upgrade?

No fear, wonders will be locked to certain circumstances, for example it wouldn't make sense to build a Cathedral if you are Pagan.

Here's an idea for the wonders, if the wonder is tied to a religion and you take over the piece of land its located, allows us to adapt the wonder to our religion or even flat out destroy it. Doing so could grant us a lot of prestige, piety and positive opinion from people who follow our religion while angering the people who's sacred religious wonder we just desecrated or flat out destroyed, increasing even the chances of rebellions happening in territories we hold that are not converted yet to our religion.

I mentioned earlier that converting a wonder is a feature we would like but unsure if we will have time for it.

When I say free I mean we are releasing this as a standalone free patch.
You know, if this *is* a subtle indication that CK2 is in a quiet maintenance mode, this is the best kind of decision Paradox could make.

Small, free updates to keep interest in the game so sales of existing DLC and base game keep coming in, small new features and bug-fixing that can be handled by a skeleton staff. Excitement by the fanbase without requiring HUGE MEGA EXPANSIONS. Cosmetic stuff like this AND not even charging us for it?

SHUT UP AND (don't) TAKE MY MONEY!

To think of it, perhaps it would be interesting to be able to spend faith to accelerate the construction of a religious wonder in a conquered but "faithless" (other religion) province, to accelerate conversion, with a potential revolt risk counterpart ? Perhaps a chain event to emphasize the religious conversion effort ?

I want to build a great palace.
I've united Arabia, Cumania and Persia, and have tens of thousands of gold.
And my seat of power is something called Keep VI.
How lame is that?
I want something beautiful and extraordinary.
Can I have it?
