CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Curious how that will work with Constantinople, though, since you have the Hagia Sophia... and there has been talk about having the Theodosian Walls as another 'wonder' as well.
We will set up the Hagia Sophia as a special case however don't think we will have an option for converting wonders dynamically.

Will societies have their own wonder building agendas?
Maybe devil worshipers able to successfully build their den and this could cause region panic and people have to fight for it?
Or the assassins could try to build their legendary Alamut castle!

These are exactly what we're thinking of. Blood altar on pyramid may be confirmed...

I think that's cool, but please don't forget other possible reformation configurations. I don't want to be "forced" to take certain doctrines/natures/leaderships in order to get cool buildings.

As an aside I think there should be more reformation synergies. Not everyone is into sacrificing or incest (these people obviously have the wrong opinions, but they exist).

Thank you for all your questions everyone!

I'll still be around a bit more today with some more answers but it will slow down from now!
Sometimes, it will depend on a specific wonders trigger. We could lock it behind a culture, a religion or even a trait!
Can you please add in a Judaism-specific, Jerusalem-specific "Third Temple" wonder? Please? Jews get so little love and it would be awesome to get this thing.

Sounds like a cool feature that should really add a lot of nice options.

Would be cool to see stuff like secret religions come into play when an heir takes over construction on a wonder and decides to make some secret "improvements".

I think repair events and crumbling wonders would be a good idea too.

As for cathedrals and saints. If you have relics you should be allowed dedicate cathedrals to their memory by using them to house those relics. You could use the burial site too. This should magnify their bonuses and maybe make them more impressive as pilgrimage sites.

Someone asked for the Mont St. Michel but what about the buldings in the Roque St. Christophe (Perigord) ?

Having family shrines/sanctuaries would be a cool idea. Family tomb upgrades, dynastic frescoes, familial tapestries, etc etc. If not a wonder in their own right, having similar family tomb and sanctuary upgrades could be available as upgrades to a cathedral or to a palace

Will some wonders have activation conditions, so that e.g. a Cathedral wonder would only give benefits to Christian rulers?
Can wonders be destroyed once they are built?

It would be funny and cool if you could botch the building of a wonder and make something like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
