CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Would really make great addition. Some examples from eastern parts of Europe: Great Lavra (and Mount Athos in general), Hagia Sophia (already mentioned), Hagia Irene (greatest Orthodox church before Hagia Sophia), Hagios Demetrios (Thessaloniki), Kiev Pechersk Lavra, three Sophia Cathedral of Rus (Novgorod, Kiev and Polotsk). West: Montecassino, Cluny and Quedlinburg abbeys (greatest libraries, scriptoriums and centres of monastic and intellectual life of medieval Europe), famous Salerno Medical School, some key Cathedrals probably (Aachen, Speyer, Amiens, Lund, Székesfehérvár) etc.

Well, a lot of nice flavourful stuff could be considered.

A bishop, cardinal or other clergy could be the caretaker of cathedrals/religious buildings if you choose so... Essentially adding another layer of vassals, but not quite...

Maybe in form of a minor title? Same would go for fortresses... Head of the Guard or something like that. With little events and income/prestige associated with that particular character.

I cant believe. Thos is awesome. You guys are 100 % best game developers on paradox. 2nd stellaris.
Could not believe we will have wonders on ck2 thank you guys. That just shows how ck2 is much better then eu4. We can build wonders how we want. While eu4 gets special mechanics only for specific nation like mighals and england and now iberia. Pathetic.

We've had some thoughts about how to use minor titles with this but unsure how to do it exactly.

I love the idea for this. Off the top of my head the following come to mind:

- Scalable universities, along the lines of Cambridge or the Germanic ones
- Castles like Windsor or the Crusader Fortresses
- Island bastions like Rhodes and Malta, the likes of which could be replicated by other single demesnes islands
- Venice, as in the upgrading of the lagoon to meet the needs of a growing populous.
- Alhambra, a muslim palace complex
- City of London/Karakorum style city that is a merchant wonder at the heart of a trade network
- Madurai style temple complex for pagan/hindu pantheons

TBH, I can easily see these working the same way that a merchant palace works, with different upgrades and routes to take. This way you could tailor them for culture and region without having to do a hundred different varieties a hundres ways, simply a coded list that feeds off whatever variables you want.
