CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

If you have a saint in your dynasty, will it be possible to dedicate a cathedral to him/her ?

It could give bonuses depending on the type of saint it is (like mirroring the bonuses given by that saint's bloodline)

And for flavor, it could rename the cathedral (for example if you dedicate it to a Saint John it would be renamed St. John Cathedral)

Could we have a log recording all of the people who contributed to building a wonder, its build dates, etc. somewhere on the province window?

And don't forget to put it into the dynastic chronicles as well.

Another thought.
Let's say my character is a zealous pagan, and they've just reformed their religion. Can they decide to build something special at one of their holy sites? The options, of course, depending on what features they've selected for their reformation. A more engaging and permanent version of "Build Great Pillar" perhaps.

Maybe a new reform thingy or add religious monuments to ancestral worship.

Great news ! It will add some flavor to the map painting and treasure hunting to do some wonder conquering ! Thank you.

Mont Saint Michel for the county of "Mortain" in Normandy is the perfect wonder for what you plan to do.
All the idea of different stages and modifications, it was what really happened there (you can see some photos of the scale model of the mont on the wikipedia page). From a little catholic church in the eighth century to a great abbey and with improvement of the fortifications to defend the mont against vikings then against the english, even Louis XI transforming it into a prison.

We can imagine for this example that the wonder can give to the county a defensive bonus and a piety related bonus as well depending of its level or just to be a temple holding with bonuses and specific buildings in it. It can also add a religious/mystics chain of event (appearance of Saint Michel or anyone else to some ruler to ask him to build the wonder).

Add a "construction chest".
What do I mean:
  • construction is broken in periods
  • during it, any character in realm can also contribute to the building - money, prestige, artifacts, piety
  • Your relatives, vassal, lieges, lords who assist with conversion and etc get ability to contribute to the building
  • "Chest" pool of budget allows to dedicate resources other than money and improve quality DURING building if your project is popular
  • It allows to assign the chief architect which can steal money :D
  • If "chest" is empty, production stops and goes longer as pauses ensue
  • If incidents happen, it allows to adjust pool, making it cheaper... or not!
  • Allows to borrow piety and money to build temples from priests and Pope
  • Societies can have it as a long going event to mobilize members to build your wonders
  • Allows to actually make wonders really coastly or long to make.

I know, an unlikely idea, but still may be interesting!

I love the idea for this. Off the top of my head the following come to mind:

- Scalable universities, along the lines of Cambridge or the Germanic ones
- Castles like Windsor or the Crusader Fortresses
- Island bastions like Rhodes and Malta, the likes of which could be replicated by other single demesnes islands
- Venice, as in the upgrading of the lagoon to meet the needs of a growing populous.
- Alhambra, a muslim palace complex
- City of London/Karakorum style city that is a merchant wonder at the heart of a trade network
- Madurai style temple complex for pagan/hindu pantheons
Aren't a number of these already decently represented by holdings or the buildings in holdings?

Hello dear developpers.

Idea for wonders :
Please :

Stonehenge site

And Carnac megaliths site in Britanny!!

The cathedral of Amiens (higher than Notre Dame of Paris! Isn t it turning the game into Crusaders cities skylines 2.. ? :))

And don t forget the book of Kells in Ireland !!

Thanks for considering this.

I definitely want to be able to build a massive statue of my character that breathes fire and shouts "REMEMBER ME" though.

Yeah, but will people be remembering you, or the statue?

We've had some thoughts about how to use minor titles with this but unsure how to do it exactly.
You can use titular titles for the wonders.
Would be cool destroying the wonders or pillaging
Pillaging repair over time like holdings
But destroying is different, wonder titular title can be indestructible while the wonder is still intact, if the wonder is destroyed and the title owner dies without repairing the wonder (which cost a lot) the title disappears and the wonder becomes a ruin (and cost way more to restore)

Will we have a game rule to disable building ahistorical buildings like building new pyramids like we do with turning off the Aztecs and Hellenic Revival?

Out of my mind… it would be cool if we were able to build stepwells in Indian context – especially since e.g. Rani ki Vav was completed circa 1066 startdate :)

Nice! I would recommend that these wonders be available only to Feudal and Merchant Republics. I can see some silliness where Norse raiders are able to farm gold and have numerous wonders.

They were called barbarians for a reason...

It would be call if these structures are not completed, after a few generations they arte known as failed works and give prestige negatives.

All wonders will be tied to a province, as that is how we have implemented it, I think it should probably work in 99% of scenarios though.
Venice unique wonder can be the basilica of Saint Mark and a unique upgrade be the horses of the hippodrome of Constantinople, you need to sack the city of Constantinople to unlock this upgrade and it can give you prestige but lower the byzantine emperor opinion of you

Even half finished a cathedral can still be used. See Cologne for example (that could be in the game by the way). After about 250 years they stopped, which left the towers unfinished, but the main body of the church was usable to some degree, although it's roof wasn't finished either. The towers were only fully built in the 19th century. Even in its mostly ruined state it became the symbol of the city

Same for some palace. Sure you haven't completed all wings and embellishments, but it can still look nice

Only one wonder per county does run into a few historical issues. As others have pointed out Hagia Sophia and Theodosian Walls, but also the Colosseum and the various great buildings of the Vatican. While many of these were built in the Renaissance period, the Pope has so much money in CK2 that he really should be able to use that on a new Catholic wonder for Rome.

Has anyone brought up pre-existing Mosques and great shrines yet?
  • Great Mosque of Mecca, in Mecca
  • Quba Mosque, in Medina
  • Great Mosque of Cordoba (actually under construction in the Charlemagne start date)
  • Great Mosque of Granada
  • The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem (speaking of which, the third temple could become a wonder as well)
Some other wonder possibilities:
  • University/museum constructed as part of the Philosopher King Bloodline chain.
  • Certain wonders being a part of religious doctrine choices during Pagan Reformation, perhaps a doctrine dedicated to special monuments or improving great temples.
  • Venice or Tenochtitlan style reclamation projects which are about adding extra holding slots to provinces specifically. Could be from both swamps, seas, or mountains (excavating a large valley out of a mountain or flattening a large region to build cities in, for example).
  • Island fortresses like Mont-Saint-Michel, which are especially hard to take militarily.
  • Grand Harbors or shipyards, probably themed around merchant republics.
  • Great trading post sites that significantly increase the trade value of a trade route, since we have to include Petra for something.
  • Perhaps wonders tied to excavation and restoration projects? They already exist at the start of the game, but don't do much until they're repaired.
