CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

I really hope that every fate will have wonders.
Maybe Stonehenge as a prebuilt one, and the Externsteine in Germany. Stone circles, dolmen and such for Pagans.
I hope we can basically build the vatican of the reformed germanic fate. Like a giant Fortress with a massive stone circle arround it with some massive oak trees.
Imagine a statue of Odin, carved out of a Mountain, larger than the Belltower of Notre Damme!

I think it would be great if you could rebuild or repair ancient wonders! If you can recreate the hanging gardens, the colossus in Rhodes, temple of Zeus, repair the great pyramids, etc!
IF you can rebuild the seven ancient wonders, controlling all seven would make for a sweet Achievement.

I don’t know if it has been suggested yet, but if there is one pre-existing wonder I would like to see in India, it’s university of Nalanda. Mostly, because of its great importance for late Buddhism in India – and seeing how its destruction was big blow for said religion :) (Moreover, event about its destruction – and loss of Buddhist MA – would be cool.)

Pyramids? Could it be.... THE PHARAOH HAS RETURNED! PRAISE THE SUN!

1. Could regions, cultures and religions which did not leave behind any great monuments like this get wonders? For example, Zunists could have the Temple of Zun in Sajawand, Germanics could have the renovated temple of Uppsala or a great temple built around the Irminsul, Romuva could have a field of beautifully carved wood statues of the Romuvan gods made by the dievdirbiai, and Suomenusko could have a carefully grown and maintained holy grove.

2. Could great monuments built during events be converted to wonders? For example, when a lunatic ruler's pets die, they can be buried in a pyramid, granting the province a permanent modifier; having these buildings converted into actual wonders could be interesting.

Great work guys !

Just some suggestions :
- Holy Horder QG, with relative bonus/malus to the ruler that decide to host these guys.
- Maybe a challenge between indipendent rulers on who is first to build a particular wonder ( like for example a very tall gothic cathedral ) with relative bonus
- Bonus/malus on who sack or decide to destroy the Wonders ( maybe also bloodline?)

This is something we would like to do but not sure if we will have time for it at the moment :)

What will be the interaction (if any) between wonders and religion holy-sites?

Ooh, I like this idea!

I want to recreate all the early big cathedrals like Stephanskirche in Wien, Aachen cathedral, that one in Oviedo, the one in Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, and so on, culminating with restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, formerly destroyed and then rebuilt in crusader times. My holy family will be remembered for eternity!

We can rebuild destroyed wonders, yes?

I would like an integration if the Unique Buildings Mod. I'm alway updating it for my personal use and it would be great to have official support. :)
(There is another buildings mod for HIP if I remember correctly)

Regarding my hometown. Will the cologne cathedral be part of the list? Maybe with an event for the tomb of the three biblical kings or the 11000 virgins?

Pyramids? Kemet expansion confirmed?

Also, Egyptian pyramids were actually white (not brownish) when they were constructed, the white limestone crumbled slowly away and was used for other construction projects over time.

If we can build pyramids, they should at least look historically accurate.

But those were ancient by the time of CK II. I'd assume they were no longer gold-topped white by then.

That looks pretty exciting :) Medieval universities might be a good fit for this new wonder feature...

For any stonehenge-esque megalith structure, make it so a lunatic character can have an epiphany about what they are really for - and let them fall like dominoes ;)

Otherwise, I think it would be nice if old event chains that cause something to be buildt could be upgraded, such that if you are ambitious, they give you the option to start a wonder. E.g. instead of just working in the castle garden, you may start to work on gardens matching the hanging gardens of babylon; similarly for laboratory, observatory etc. - heck, that thing where your steward builds a statue, add an option that he reveals just a large platform that allows you to start building a statue of colossal proportions - or not.
