CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

As for my ideas: if a province has a wonder, please give the related EU4 province a permanent modifier after Save Game conversion!
Yes, brother — never let them forget about the converter!

If they bring back ancient Egyptian religion without an upgrade to Miaphysites I mean... come on... might as well call it Pagan Revenge II, now. But anyway, this looks like fun. I hope to see major wonders for Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria.

Building wonders sounds cool.

Just some questions and suggestions:

1. Will AI rulers (independent or vassal) start building a new wonders or continue building an existing one? Especially those with lots of money like Lord Mayor, Grand Mayor and Prince Mayor...

2. As "All wonders will be tied to a province", if a vassal count holds the province, while the bonus income goes into his pocket, will his liege & top liege duke / king / emperor also receive prestige / piety / technology points generated?

3. Will there be any event-only wonders? Like finding an ancient ruin / city / temple in the jungle / on the mountain or cliff or after flooding, (depend on traits & attributes) you can choose to rebuild it as a wonder (leave a base for you to build it when you have money) / study for technology points / dismantle it for timed build time build cost modifier.
1. AI rulers can start and continue construction of wonders. I'm not sure of all the factors that will go into their decision to do so, but money will certainly be a factor.

2. The top liege of the realm will be the one who owns the wonder so he/she will pay for construction and reap most of the benefits.

3. Wonders will of course be tied in to the event system but I'm not sure if there will be event specific ones.

Possibilities could include the Marib Dam and other historical dams within Yemen, the Cathedral at Aachen as a 769 Holy Roman Emperor, the Alhambra palace and fortress in Granada as a Muslim ruler, the Duomo Cathedral in Florence and the Great Mosque of Cordoba as a Muslim ruler. I don't know how many of these just count as cool buildings and aren't grand enough to be considered a "wonder" but I'd say the Marib Dam should at least count as a pre-existing wonder, as the oldest dam in the world.

Can there be multiple monuments per county? Rome alone would be filled with them between the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, Castelo Santo Angelo, the Palatine Hill Palace, even a potential early Saint Peter's Basilica...if not maybe there could be some flexibility on the modding side to allow for it?

Will certain wonders appear differently depending on your culture? I'd love to see a beautiful Chinese-style Cathedral for a Han Christian to build or a Great Mosque for Han Muslims. There are quite a few examples of the beautiful places of worship across China if you guys need any ideas.
While I would love this, it probably isn't feasible to have culture specific graphics based on each wonder.

Will major Universities be available wonders?

Also, Medieval castles were often bright colours like green or pink or blue.
Will there be options for wonders having type era suitable paint jobs?

in game would be different from a cathedral? or something like unique graphic variant?
Universities are planned.

This is wonderful news indeed. So we will have some "generic, ahistorical vanity projects" and "historical prebuilt monuments" that can be converted into EU4 (at least thought occured), and buildable cathedrals, pyramids, upgradeable towers and decorations. Have you considered "monarchs personal palace" type monument, like upgrade your capital holding into Medieval Versailles, or something along those lines? And here I thought Holy Fury couldn't be topped.
So the wonders are completley separate from your other holdings but we are planning to have a palace.
