CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

While I would love this, it probably isn't feasible to have culture specific graphics based on each wonder.
My preference would be to have a standard/generic appearance for each wonder, but with the ability to specify an override if specific conditions are met. That way you would only have to provide one piece of art per item, but if there was an exceptional case - say, making Great Mosques in West Africa look like the Mosque of Djenné instead of Cordoba or Medina - that could be done without requiring a complete set of appearances for every wonder/culture combination.

I would like to see a new title, Family butler. A random courtier will be spawned to take this title. And there would be events related to him serving the family and the family head. And butler could give positive event, with stats which he is good at. And bad ones to. The butler could also risk his life to protect his lord with his life. And as a player you could pass the butlers title to his childeren. And so making a servant dynasty which in return give them a postive opinion modifier.

Not sure how common butlers were in the middle ages, but this sounds like a fairly easy mod for you to make. :)

The Chief Butlers of England and Ireland were definitely a thing. The Earls of Ormond adopted the family name Butler because of their long tenure in the latter post.

OMG, amazing news. CK2 has taken such a turn for the better in the past few months. I know it is approaching the end of its development cycle, but the product that will be left at the end will be a fleshed-out, glorious game. Always wanted mega-projects in both CK2 and EU4. Just felt that massive contructions like cathedrals were a big part of the efforts of that era.

In Italy there are tons of monuments, after all its the Country with the most world heritages in the world ...
like

1173 Tower of Pisa
1296 Florence Cathedral
1392 Milan Dome
832 St Mark's Basilica
and many many others....

but I would like to propose a special one, often forgotten even by tourists ...

is a 13th-century citadel and castle situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. It was built during the 1240s by the Emperor Frederick II, who had inherited the lands from his mother Constance of Sicily.
Because of its relatively small size, it was once considered to be no more than a "hunting lodge", but scholars now believe it originally had a curtain wall and did serve as a citadel.Frederick was responsible for the construction of many castles in Apulia, but Castel del Monte's geometric design was unique. The fortress is an octagonal prism with an octagonal tower at each corner. The towers were originally some 5 m higher than now, and they should perhaps include a third floor. Both floors have eight rooms and an eight-sided courtyard occupies the castle's centre. Each of the main rooms has vaulted ceilings. Three of the corner towers contain staircases. The castle has two entrances, an unobtrusive service entrance and an ornate main entrance. Frederick's main entrance featured elements from classical design, and may have been influenced by Frederick's interest in Greco-Roman architecture.Capital with faun headThe octagonal plan is unusual in castle design. Historians have debated the purpose of the building and it has been suggested that it was intended as a hunting lodge.Another theory is that the octagon is an intermediate symbol between a square (representing the earth) and a circle (representing the sky). Frederick II may have been inspired to build to this shape by either the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which he had seen during the Sixth Crusade, or by the Palace Chapel of Aachen Cathedral.

ok, just a quick list (love the ideas and art)
  • restore ancient Roman/Hellenic faith (gods and stuff called differently if culture Latin or Greek) - new religion symbol (Maybe use the old golden one from EU4?)
  • restore ancient Egyptian faith (resurgence of old Egyptian - (coptic culture and name list maybe?) - new Kemetic religion symbol and user interface in hieroglyphic style, small pyramid-themed temples perhaps?
  • Witches/immortal druid from events could trigger resurgence of Druidic/Celtic faith in Hibernia and Britannia? Temple design and stone/vines themed new interface for this one
  • possible religion specific CoA shield frames for these
  • Zoroastrian holy temples might get a new on-map building? Perhaps also updated shield/symbol list for the faith and dynasty please (and make CoA work like the Muslim-ones meaning dynastic shields override territorial ones)
  • possible neo-Roman unit pack, like the one for EU4? same suggestion for neo-Egyptian one (idea for 2 holy orders: Horus-styled lighter armored colourful unit models & Anubis-styled black heavy plate armored models
  • please make a central European pack for buildings (temples, castles, merchant family estates, etc) for cultures like Hungarian, Bohemian, Wendish, Polish, Ruthenian (might require a certain date to pass to appear?)
  • please an unit pack for Christian Hungary, maybe adapt alse the EU4 models for Bohemia as a later age option for them
  • and pretty please with cherry on top an update to CK2 customiser/dynasty designer, there are already a lot of good mods which you could adapt into official patch that have hundreds of possible shield styles, heraldic design pieces, lots of colors, and all of them in a much better resolution and variety

I just wondered: is the patch that adds this going to be the next one, or can we expect some fixes before these additions? I'm still eagerly awaiting the Hellenic gods getting their Greek names if you reform as Greek fix and hoping it isn't delayed just so it can be added at the same time as the Wonders.

I just want to chime in on the Palace Wonder. I really hope you get that one in, so my emperor can have a fitting seat of power.

I absolutely love it. I do hope this free update is not the end game and that this is a feature you will build upon because it's absolutely fantastic for flavor and creating variety in gameplay.
I'd like to suggest some possible wonders :

1) Special monasteries like the chartreuse de Champmol or the abbaye de Citeaux which were built as a prestigious dynastic resting place for the capetian house of Burgundy and the Valois branch. Philipp the Bold and John the Fearless wanted to make it equal in prestige to the Saint-Denis royal necropole.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champmol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cîteaux_Abbey
It can be generalized as a dynastic burial place that could take various form.

2) The various roman ruins of Trier (give those imperial electors there some reason to feel above other bishops!) like the iconic Porta Nigra
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porta_Nigra
But more importantly, the Aula Palatina, a medieval basilica built on the main hall of a roman palace. What makes it really cool is the fact it could potentially be restaured as either a unique cathedral or a restored roman palace on the damn' Rhine!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aula_Palatina
Also, the Cathedral of Trier which is an expanded roman church.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_Trier

3) Beyond simply being a cathedral, I think the Cathedral of Compostela should be a wonder in its own right with special flavor and upgrades. As the westernmost pilgrimage site and one of the most important religious attraction of Europe.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_de_Compostela_Cathedral

4) Moving out of Europe, the Buddhas of Bamiyan, a fantastic opportunity to build up a large buddhist complex in Afghanistan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhas_of_Bamiyan

5) Down to Abyssinia, the famous steles in Axum
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Ezana's_Stela

6) The Lalibela monolithic churches complex ! A testament to the power of Abyssinia in the medieval era.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalibela
800px-Bete_Giyorgis_03.jpg

7) the University of Sankore in the larger Timbuktu university complex. A major intellectual centel in western Africa
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankore_Madrasah
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Timbuktu

8) The Nubian pyramids. Nubia doesn't get much flavor so here's something to show off!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nubian_pyramids

9) The original great Mosque of Djenneh that could have been built as early as the early XIIIth century.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Mosque_of_Djenné

10) Finally, I'd like to suggest major ports like the canal port of Brugges or Venice.

awesome! i've often thought the game needs something like this!

I'm guessing the Egyptian Pagan religion will make a comeback... Still weird though, Cleopatra's lived closer to the present day than to the construction of pyramids, to picture how old those really are...
That's cool and stuff, but I would have preferred an Aztec Warior Lodge and other missing content.
And I think a rebirth of the Celtic faith would make much more sense than the Egyptian faith, considering the medieval timeframe.
