CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

We will set up the Hagia Sophia as a special case however don't think we will have an option for converting wonders dynamically.
In that case, what about conquering a place with wonders and then destroying the wonders that are not from our religion/culture but using their materials to build new wonders of our religion/culture, and making them way cheaper than if we build them from scratch instead of re-using?

I hope we'll be able to rename wonders after we complete them. We can already rename artifacts and titles, and I don't want my Imperial Palace to be stuck as "[culture name here] Palace".

Hmm. Well I think that Cathedrals and mega monastries would be cool. Especially the largest ones in Europe, which were basically massive citdels with cities around them (in essence the ultimate hold slot building, combing the best bits of everything).

Mind you if we are going to do that, I'd also like to be able to build a proper captial city and castle in my kingdom, something akin to the republic's family estate. Something unique and amaing for every powerful family to build, and give a real sense of personal history and honour to each playthrough. I believe this is something they were trying to achieve with the chronicle but this would actually be on the map and of use as a gameplay feature. Expensive as all hell too, and a gigantic target for wars defensive and offensive.

I think that would be a grest addition to the game both on a strategic scale and for roleplay purposes.

Boy, this thread has grown much bigger than I expected ! I haven't read every page so please excise these suggestions if they've already been made.

First, how about a time portal/alien portal of some sort that would be available with some ridiculously low event chance - player finds mystic portal in ruins in some cave and then devotes time/energy/resources to rebuilding it, unveiling a portal to another world/time (and associated event chain and achievement !) before it is lost again.

Second, how about a much smaller "Great Wonder" that if built to the 6th Level in 6 holdings in each of 6 adjacent counties unlocks a portal to the very Gates of Hell. This could be a great super-quest for a dynasty of demon worshipers - spend 300 years to open the Gates of Hell and unlock/reveal the offmap power of Hades, or alternatively it could be the ultimate player countdown clock - forget Mongols or the Black Death, Clan Nosferatu has built its Demon Portal to Level 5 in every province and is within a generation of unleashing Hell, their provinces need to be looted before Earth is destroyed.

I would LOVE to see what boons Satan himself can give out !

So if the Great Pyramid is a wonder what about the other surviving seven wonders of the world?
The Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus are both still standing for most of the games time span.
The other four could be restored by ambitious rulers.

I'm not going to lie, I had no idea those things survived as long as they did.

Stairway to heaven! Giant monuments to the gods, maybe for certain religions, like Hellenism, a giant cross, a giant Buddha, maybe even for cultures, statues of legendary hero’s, like maybe historic bloodline specific for example?

Let's see the other four

-The colossus of Rhodes remains were melt on the VII century. Perhaps a vengeful Hellenic emperor could force the jewish and muslim/arabic inhabitants of the Empire to pay a tax to its reconstruction, since a jewish merchant was responsible for the melting of the pieces, that were sold to him by a muslim general.
-Zeus's statue in Olympia could be restored by a wealthy Greek Hellenic emperor. It was destroyed on the V century by a fire, probably.
-Same as the above, Artemis' Temple in Ephesus could be restored by an Hellenic ruler. Note that Ephesus has also an Orthodox holy site (Lebedos), so any event related to the temple could involve the local christian population. The temple itself was destroyed over time, as it was a source of marble during the IV-VI centuries.
-The Hanging Gardens probably disappeared during Classic Age...due their ephemeral nature.

Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, maybe? With upgrades linked to Buddhist religion/high learning/erudite/university?

Presumably there might be wonders in Lhasa and Bodh Gaya as well.

Bloodlines actually somewhat fulfill that role as well. I've gotten far more invested in roleplaying and the history of my dynasty just from having the option of forging a bloodline. Wonders are very promising for expanding on that, especially if they can focus on more interesting aspects about them rather than just minor bonuses and buffs. More money, piety, prestige, and other stats aren't going to make me want to engage in the system beyond as an end game or story goal. Things like the bonus holding buildings or improved councillor actions actually shake things up and make the game feel different even within the same religion/government. More things like that would be really nice.

  • Special unit/retinue types for a military wonder (special elite defining units of the army with special names; Companion Cavalry, Knights of the Round Table, -Dynasty Name-'s Chosen).
  • All the children of your vassals coming to study in your university, with special events for them forming friendships and rivalries like in heir introductions and other special events, in addition to a chance at getting special education traits tied to the university. Your own society, in a sense.
  • A great garden that lets you host competitions for people to bring their flowers, sculptures, or other decorations to add to it, a sort of stewardship tournament.
  • Reclamation projects that bring civilization to remote areas, which in turn become wonders in their own right which people from around the world come just to see. The unusual nature of its construction leads to all the holdings having different buildings and the province developing a culture all of its own (maybe not an actual new culture, but you get the flavor).
Elite retinue training center idea continued: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...-wonderful-news.1152921/page-25#post-25173986

The Suez Canal was theorized for centuries before the game's start, but never made. Perhaps a very expensive canal could be created by Egyptian emperors? The ability to send boats from one side of the map to the other would be a huge change, since the map currently has two oceans that will never connect.
