Dev Diary #114 - Wonderful Upgrades

Hello!

Today we will be presenting some of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder. Each stage of your Wonder will unlock upgrade slots, which will allow you to build Upgrades. Upgrades have their own triggers, meaning that in some cases you may need to fulfill other requirements in order to to unlock them. Not every Wonder needs a Lighthouse Custodian, and not every character would know how to grow poisonous herbs.

Each Wonder has access to Upgrades that are shared with other Wonders, as well as unique ones. Here are some examples:

One of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder is ‘Spikes’. This is a generic Upgrade, meaning you can build it on any Wonder. As well as increasing the Siege Defence of holdings in the province, this Upgrade allows you to try to use a new decision, Intimidate, on other characters every now and then.

Other Upgrades are more tailored for the Wonder at hand, such as the Trap Door, and the Royal Bedchamber, available for the Royal Palace.

Another upgrade you can add is the Armory. This is a unique upgrade that can be built on the Great Fortress. It unlocks special options in the weapon smiths chain, as can be seen below.

With the Armory, your own smiths can actually give you a decent weapon. You can even ask for the specially heavy Zweihander Sword.

Other Upgrades will unlock minor titles, like the Custodian of the Stone, any guesses as to what type of wonder this is built on?

And finally, some will need to be tried out.

Thank you for your time!

Unrelated to the main post, but I'd like to ask on behalf of a decent-sized number of players if we're getting a public release of the Featured Ruler feature to everyone this patch as well? :D

I suddenly 'hate' Paradox so much for this, because I know for a fact this is gonna be like holy fury, im gonna just build up excitement and refuse to play ck2 until it comes out because why would I? The next patch is gonna be too cool. When it finally does im gonna absolutely love it but 2 months later Paradox is gonna be like "We are gonna add ship combat now" and i'm gonna refuse to play until that comes out and so on. So please cut the waiting... just give us a beta unfinished version. I honestly don't care I will spend $20 to play it early (instead of it for free) even if that means that my game will crash every 10 minutes and all of my saves get overwritten.

(Realized I forgot to say but this wasn't me actually saying I hate paradox, I used it as an extreme. Mostly I was talking about how I felt like paradox teased us a lot, not that it isn't worth the wait but that I would take an incomplete beta finding bugs for them over just waiting, I do love paradox and unless something drastic changes I always will)

We need Suez Canal as the true wonder!
I'm pretty sure it has already been denied but I would love it because it makes Vikings in India way easier. You normally need to get a base in the Arabian sea to even try and raid, then you would just need the Suez.

The tradepost neeeeeddddddd to be connected by the seeeeeaaaaaaaa....................
I can't build one on red sea part of sinai, sigh.

1) Special, Constantinople only wonder: empire capital complex (or something along those lines) that includes the Great Palace, Hagia Sophia, Hippodrome, Imperial Library, and possibly Theodosian Walls.

Constantinople and Rome could be hamdled with an “Imperial City”-Wonder with the main Buildings beeing different Upgrades.
This is my preferred implementation. It would also provide modders with a useful template for great (or once-great) cities such as King's Landing, Minas Tirith, or Shoonach.

I assume it's some pop-culture reference, rather than an actual historical thing.
Hope I'm wrong though.
I mean, what are famous historical things, if not the pop-culture of their time? (I'd be delighted seeing it as a wonder: Having my architects tell me that balancing a medium sized rock on two others is an exact science that is very expensive and takes very long.)
The contemporary pop-culture reference would be the Scone of Stone.

I'm not adherent of solution "enter the historical railway". I prefer more alt-historical constructions, possible to be built in a place with any or a few conditions, than the arbitrary scheme "X must be in Y, because that's what happened in the real world". Eg. wonder of medieval world - Chartres Cathedral - could have been built in current north France because there were good economic, political, sociological conditions etc. But "Great Wonderful Cathedral with the best stained glass in world" should also can be builded in Plock, Weimar or Kair; the most important than "place" should be skill of ruler, skill of architect, luck, good prosperity etc.

Therefore I have hope on Big Ducks and upgrade - Ponds of Harmony.

This is something we are planning to add but unsure if it will make it in.

As i said before, you can use the existing 3d models for most wonders. But give us the option to mod in our own map models for wonders. I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it and would gladly add more unique models to various wonders.

So wonder upgrades have both a maintenance cost (the X/a month) as well as a fixed cost?
What happens if you can no longer afford the maintenance? Can you scrap upgrades?

The cost is only while building them.

And yes, they will have both a flat cost that you pay straight up, and a ticking cost that will deduct money each month while the construction is ongoing.
If you can't afford the ticking cost, the construction will be put on hold until you're back in the green again.
Upgrades can be scrapped while they are in construction, but: NO REFUNDS!
