Dev Diary #114 - Wonderful Upgrades

Hello!

Today we will be presenting some of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder. Each stage of your Wonder will unlock upgrade slots, which will allow you to build Upgrades. Upgrades have their own triggers, meaning that in some cases you may need to fulfill other requirements in order to to unlock them. Not every Wonder needs a Lighthouse Custodian, and not every character would know how to grow poisonous herbs.

Each Wonder has access to Upgrades that are shared with other Wonders, as well as unique ones. Here are some examples:

One of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder is ‘Spikes’. This is a generic Upgrade, meaning you can build it on any Wonder. As well as increasing the Siege Defence of holdings in the province, this Upgrade allows you to try to use a new decision, Intimidate, on other characters every now and then.

Other Upgrades are more tailored for the Wonder at hand, such as the Trap Door, and the Royal Bedchamber, available for the Royal Palace.

Another upgrade you can add is the Armory. This is a unique upgrade that can be built on the Great Fortress. It unlocks special options in the weapon smiths chain, as can be seen below.

With the Armory, your own smiths can actually give you a decent weapon. You can even ask for the specially heavy Zweihander Sword.

Other Upgrades will unlock minor titles, like the Custodian of the Stone, any guesses as to what type of wonder this is built on?

And finally, some will need to be tried out.

Thank you for your time!

RIP the My Personal Castle mod. Can you build multiple wonders per province? Let's say I want a Great Fortress to guard my Royal Palace...can't have any armies getting uppity while I'm having fun with my subjects' wives, after all.

Now buckle up, because hoo boy, do I have questions about the Royal Palace.

  • If I capture someone else's Royal Palace, can I have two of them, or is the other one auto-destroyed?
  • Are Royal Palaces bound by...
    • title - you have to be a king or emperor to have one?
    • geography - you can only have one per duchy, region, or some other unit of land area?
    • independence - can a king subject to an emperor have a Palace?
    • any other other metric?
    • some combination of the above?
  • Does building a Royal Palace prevent you from subsequently moving your capital (barring loss of the province)?
    • Assuming you retain the ability to move your capital, will it provide dynastic benefits if you give it to your family (for example, strengthening the claim of whomever holds it or providing additional prestige to all family members as long as a dynasty member holds it)?
  • If you move your capital, is your old palace removed, or does it remain?
  • Will Royal Palaces move or be capable of moving the de jure capital of a title?

This isn't really related to this dev diary, but since the pyramids will be a wonder...are we going to get a joke supernatural event relating to the aliens that built them? ;)

Lastly, maybe I missed or forgot about it, but is there a list of all the wonders that will be included, at least as of now?

My only question is, can anyone build a wonder? Like for example if I were a duke who just so happens to have a lot of cash on him is that enough to build a wonder of my choice or do you need to be king tier or emperor tier ruler before we can consider doing that?
Like is there requirements to prevent the world from being too 'wonderful'? ;)

OR is it just up to us as the character's to have enough gusto ambition to build these behemoth's?

I hope that it costs money to maintain these upgrades.
Unless as an upgrade there are sharks in a pool, which you need to feed regularly, I can't see why you need to pay upkeep...
You put spikes around a building. What, you're gonna pay for a guy to sharpen those spikes every day or so?

Any independent ruler will be allowed to construct wonders.
We do not plan on capping it to a anything else than one wonder per province and will instead focus on balancing them using high gold costs and build time constraints.
The AI will also be told to exercise some restraint when it comes to wonders so we don't get too many and so they won't put themselves in crippling debt making statues of themselves.

Would it be possible to link wonder construction for independent AI rulers to the Proud and/or Ambitious trait without affecting player restrictions? That could severely limit the amount of independent AI Rulers attempting to build Wonders, in addition to whatever other behavioral restrictions you're setting up. If you wanted to go even further, prohibit slothful, greedy, stupid, or shy individuals from ever building them. Would this be possible?

This is going to sound very silly: I think it would be cool if you could as your characters raid, break in or sort of "dungeon crawl" somebody else's wonders, through an event chain.

Anyhow. Love the idea! Can't wait to play with this in the game.

In my opinion, lots of them are realistic, Cathedrals, Fortresses etc. The rest are plausible if unlikely, pyramids. Upgrades can be a bit more fantasy but of course can be turned off by game rule.

@Tuscany

Will the great universities of Europe be included or could those be a separate patch/dlc? Something to do with characters attending, furthering education, making new friends/lovers, spreading innovation, etc.

Also will Basilica be the lest level for Cathedrals?

I love the concept. Everything here is looking really good.

However, I'm not sure that these are really 'wonders'. Cathedrals, universities and fortresses (sort of) already exist in the game. And as incredible and beautiful as the great medieval cathedrals are, there are many of them around Europe.

Wonders should be buildings of an incredible and singular nature. They should be so immense, expensive and conceptually extreme that only the wealthiest and most driven power is able to build them.

A lot of what I'm seeing feels like an expansion of the holding structure system. Why not use this patch to overhaul that, using the existing concept and design work completed to date? That also means that holdings become more unique and dynamic. A key defensive castle becomes a fortress, while the capital holding of an empire slowly turns in more of a royal palace. A university in a merchant republic becomes trade centric while one in a holy site becomes more theologically focused. A wealthy province Church holding becomes a world renowned cathedral, while the backwater province remains small, but they might have invested what they could afford in a truly beautiful stained glass window.

Again, I love what I'm seeing, and I think it will add hugely to the depth but I think it risks both duplicating and ignoring the current holding system, while failing to deliver on the wonder system people are hoping for. (Which incidentally seems to be split between two views, one that wonders should be extremely rare, and the other that would see almost every famous building given wonder status).
