So does it take into consideration potential alterations in the balance of power? Say the Soviet Union overruns Central Europe and puppets all of Germany up to the Rhine. Will it switch to balancing against the USSR or stick on balancing against Germany?
It should balance against the USSR if it goes well. Likewise, if Germany joins the Cominterm, you'll balance against the USSR. When France joins the Allies, you end up balancing the UK instead of France. Same for Italy and Germany. At least for now.

I see your point but the main thing against it being independant would be lag and that it's an useless nation to play, so i think the compromise of having it as a releasable state would be ok
No Lichtenstein sorry! They were kinda "protected" by Switzerland during this period but no plans for them for now, specially not on the map.

I find the mention of a bonus to Field hospitals for the Swiss interesting, Will the bonus actually make them worth using, unlike now. Any chance that Field hospitals could be made to be worth it for everyone or at least in more cases?
That's the idea with Brandy!

How will Germany's Opersation Tannebaum focus react with the Swiss focus tree?
The one where they get a wargoal on Switzerland? No plan yet but might to leave it as it is. That's a risk when playing all ahistorical with Switzerland. At most I could add some AI considerations.

Very good.

What about the : " untraceable bank accounts ?"

Does nations may trade with others (including current enemies ) via Swiss secret bank accounts (as they do in reality, lot of axis international trading in ww2 happened cause swiss bank hadnt any problem to do so?
I'm hoping to represent this with some abstractions but nothing as detailed or complex as that unfortunately.

I've done some suggestions for this before, but seeing as it might come in handy Ill reply here, I've already made minor changes to provinces which allow for these borders, originally intended for 3 states, Romandie, the Swiss Plateau and Ticino. I'm sure similar 5 state sub-divisions would also be possible.
By having a state more akin to Grisons in real life, the ability for a releasable Romanch state appears.
These states would allow for the national redoubt also if more impassable boundaries representing the Bernese Alps, the Glarus Alps and other areas important to implement. (Last image shows suggested impassables as well as the states).

Original suggestion vs updated for 5 state suggestion:

Suggested Impassables: (The Gotthard pass would be in the eastern most province of Valais)

To make it easier to implement and see for youself, here are the codes to add to the impassables to allow for these boundaries^ (NOTE: These may clash with already set out boundaries shown in the Dev Diary, notably on the southern border.):

I hope any of this helps, loving the look of the update so far!
Thank you! I'll look into this tomorrow but can't make any promises!

"Switzerland will start with a unique Recruitment Law giving it 10% recruitable population, and no negative effects, that’s because the enlisted population is still participating in the economy."

So the Swiss Militias are fighting at the border and working in the factories at the same time? Swiss Übermenschen?
Nah, when you activate the militias they lose the debuffs but the economy gets penalties.

I'm sorry, Paradox but this is not for me - if you're a fellow player reading this thread and are excited about Switzerland then I am pleased for you, and hope that these focus trees and alt-history opportunities make for great gameplay.

I'm allowed to disagree and I fear that I do here. For me, having played all of the HOIs (yes I'm old) and having seen HOI4 go down this route of obsessing over country packs and focus trees, I yearn for the developers' limited resources going into 'getting the basics right': I'm talking about a plausible approach to air combat, sorting out land warfare (it's still not right), sorting out peace conferences (they're awful without the excellent mod) perhaps making command and control a bit more detailed etc. Perhaps something that allows for reservist divisions, that are kept half-manned (or even lower) but fill up as a country mobilises. The UK starting OOB is ridiculous, as you have territorial divisions sat manned, equipped and ready for deployment. That should take weeks, and only after an event like a DoW.

I'd also, if we have to have focus trees, like to see a mechanic that sees the AI react to the decisions of the player: the focus trees as currently developed are far too linear and take place in isolation from other in-game events.

I expect this tree to be something 'different', and that usually implies not appealing to everyone. I understand the reticence, but by building Switzerland, we're not taking attention away from systems reworks such as you describe. In fact as others have pointed out, we've already committed to most of the items you mention in this post.

The one exception would be the latter. I don't disagree that focus trees, while great for linear storytelling, tend to jar against each other and against other game systems. They're also part of the essence of what HoI4 is, and won't be changing. Changing it in a meaningful way would be akin to building an entirely different game, let alone the time investment it would incur.

All this said, I hope the overall content of the pack still interests you. The downside of very focused dev diaries is that one tends to view each thing in a vacuum - there's a lot more being done in BBA :)

@CarloPDX

Maybe I am a bit late but due to work I could not write earlier. As a Swiss myself I would like to bring some points to mind that hopefully can still be changed:

1. Mapwise, the Gotthardpass-VP is one Province too far West, same for Basel. For the passability of the Alps, all three provinces, the one with the VP of Chur, the one West of it (Gotthardpass) and the one that contains the Gotthardpass at the moment (what would actually be the Simplonpass) are passable from north to south, so the nonpassable terrain in the center of switzerland is somewhat misleading. What would be more interesting and also somewhat more plausible is to close off the east-west axis for passability in the central alpine region. While theoretically passable, the passes from the gotthardpass to the east into grison and the west into wallis are even nowadays up to 6 months unpassable.

So I suggest to move the Gotthardpass VP and change the passability in the alps to have three north-south corridors:

1. Lugano-Chur and further north (follow the railway), which is the san bernardino pass route. Please remove the railway from lugano to chur (there is no railway there, not even now), the railway goes to the northern ticino province and then through the (moved) gotthard VP to Zürich
2. Northern Ticino Province- Most eastern eastern Switzerland province-Zürich (Gotthard route, this needs the most developed railways).
3. The Simplon route (which is at the moment the gotthard VP) to Bern. This one is well implemented but the Traintracks are wrong. The Simplon route goes to Bern (as it does at the moment), but has no direct connection to Zürich. This is probably simulating the Gotthard route but as said it is too far west.

One can argue to add the St Berhhard crossing from the northeastern most Italian province into Wallis

2. While the Balance of Power between the Federal Government and the Cantonal Government does make sense (it is still going on), during World War II the Balance of Power between the French and German speaking part was way more important for the future of Switzerland.

Partially a reason why Guisan was elected General was because he was from the French part. The Assembly was worried that if they pick a German-Speaking General the French will feel even more underrepresented. This also behind the background that in 1932 the Swiss Army helped putting down protests (Anti German ones) in Geneva with force (13 people were shot) and the Army hand picked the soldiers from German speaking ones.
This would also makes sense with the background of Alt-History and choosing sides: Guisan itself had secret plans helping the French for example. The Western parts were very inclined to side with France, the German speaking ones with Germany. It would make sense to have this balance deciding wether to stay neutral or pick a side.

3. While I think the Milita system is a brilliant pick and the special representation in the recruitment law is nice, the Swiss army had special divisions and not only one (two with the mountaneers) template. So we can have locked templates but it would be nice to have more than one. There should be at least 4, maybe 5.

1. A simple infantry template (the most available) with line inf and support engineer, field hospital and recon
2. Th Artillery Divisions with line inf and support artillery, engineer and field hospital
3. AT Divisions, line inf, support AT and engineer
4. AA Divisions, line inf and support aa + Engineer
(5. A tank division)

This would somewhat represent the swiss army better.

4. I would like for Switzerland to have some sort of anti bombing spirit (especially for strat-bombing). Most alpine airports were built into mountains, so while the runway was exposed, the aircraft were safe. Same for many other important depots and storages. Switzerland was able to move goods through the mountains.

So logistic Bombing and Strat Bombing should be harder against switzerland.

5. Economically Switzerland traded the gold (or used the gold trade in general) to buy ressources like tungsten, steel and coal. It would be nice to get offmap civs for the trade that can be used to buy important goods from germany and italy (even if they are in closed economy).

So thats my 2 cents, hope you can have a look into it.
Thanks for the info! I'll take a proper look on Monday. About the Balance of Power, I did consider having it be about the different languages, but didn't want to have a conflict of national identities as the center of the content, this is part of the reason why the states are not representative of languages spoken (Except for Ticino)

We'll just have to see what Carlo has in store for us :) It may make me work for it, but given it's alt-history, who knows? A Tannu Tuva or Luxembourg Focus Tree DD would probably stretch me ;)

Bonus Oerlikon pic, this time from Navsource - click through the link for a decent description and instructions on how to use :)

Shame on me but I forgot to show the designers, well Oerlikon is definitely in there. The traits here are placeholders.

You could use actual boats the Swiss "Navy" used, or rather the so called Motorbootdetachements of the Swiss Army, used to patrol Reduit-lakes as some Swiss lakes became strategically important borders if it had come to the activation of the Reduit-plan.

View attachment 853269

The Swiss had ten of these Type 41 boats and during WW2, when the Reduit-plan was active, they have been stationed in:

2 in the Thunersee
1 in the Brienzersee
3 in the Northern and 2 in the Southern Vierwaldstättersee
2 in the Walensee near the Reduit Fortress of Sargans

Even to this day the Boat Detachements exist and a few years ago Switzerland has bought 14 brand new Type 16 Patrouillenboot's from Finnish production:

View attachment 853272
We actually added the manufacturer of those boats as a designer. Doubt you would use it in historical though
