EU4 - Development Diary - 13th of November 2018

Welcome once more to another Tuesday development diary. This week I’m going to focus on content for the nations of the Maghreb, but I’ll also revisit Catholic Iberia towards the end.

morocco.png

Morocco’s mission tree leads the player on a military adventure across the world; you’ll lead your armies across the coast of the Maghreb, through the Sahara desert and into the rich empires of West Africa. The player now has much more agency over Morocco’s expansion southwards, with the Sudanese Expedition event now being tied to completing the ‘Saharan Route’ mission. Establishing a foothold in West Africa and establishing a new palace built with Portuguese ransom money will grant the powerful Black Guard modifier, giving Morocco +2.5% discipline for the rest of the game. Plundering the riches of Mali will also net you an impressive haul of gold to add to your treasury.

Looking northwards, Morocco must also sponsor pirates against the Iberian powers, and lead a raiding expedition to Iceland and beyond. Morocco will also be encouraged to create an overseas empire, focusing on Brazil, Colombia, and the Caribbean.

At long last, Morocco has a set of national ideas of its very own:

Tunis’ mission tree is somewhat pirate-themed. They will be encouraged to be the menace of the Mediterranean, occupying its islands and using them as a base to plunder the wealthy ports of Venice, Genoa, and Valencia. Establishing a sufficiently powerful privateering base on the Barbary Coast will attract the attention of one Hayreddin Barbarossa, who may come offering his services rather than as a conqueror.

Like Morocco, Tunis will also have greater control over its southward expansion. They must pacify the Berber tribes and seize control of the Saharan trade in order to open a path of conquest to West Africa.

Tunis too has earned its own national ideas:

We’ve loosened the requirements for forming Morocco and Tunis, which will make these mission trees more accessible to other nations in the region. We’ve also replaced some of the generic missions for Maghrebi nations, seen above. These missions will be free in the 1.28 ‘Spain’ update and available to all Maghrebi nations without unique missions.

andalusia.jpg

Here we have the mission tree for Granada and Andalusia, the White Phoenix. These missions are available in a reduced form for Granada, and for any nation that forms Andalucia.

Granada has a very difficult start; not only eyed hungrily by the Iberians, especially Castile, they must now contend with a looming disaster; in the Granadan War of Succession Yusuf V will attempt to seize the throne from the incompetent Sultan Muhammad IX of the Nasrid dynasty. Granada’s early missions will guide them through the difficult first years of the game.

If by some miracle you manage to secure Granada as a true regional power and restore the great Sultanate of Andalusia, the mission tree will expand significantly to reveal new paths of conquest and exploration. Along the way you’ll restore the Emirate of Sicily, restore the Great Mosque of Isbiliya, and beat back Christina rule all the way to France. Conquering the former Fatimid realm of Egypt will grant the opportunity to move the capital to Egypt and convert to the Shia faith, while exploring Africa and the New World will grant colonial bonuses as well the conquistador Mustafa Azemmouri, one of the few historical survivors of the doomed Narváez expedition.

And here's an idea set for Andalusia:

Code:

Let’s revisit Catholic Iberia briefly. We’ve been working on some new Dynamic Historical events for the region which weren’t ready for announcement last week. Here’s a taster:

Note from Groogy
So since bunch of people asked what Artillery Fire is, instead of answering every individual instance of where someone asked that I'm putting a summary here. The important part you need to know, it makes all cannons go more boom boom and make more damage.

Artillery Fire is a modifier that previously was only exclusive to tech. In fact all of the various tech weapon values are now available to the modifier system. The weapon technology value is part of the casualties equation and is applied multiplicatively. Very TL;DR and skipping some parts for the land combat formula is something like:

Code:
dmg = ((regiment pips + leader pips + dice - terrain) * regiment strength * discipline / military tactics) * weapon technology * combat ability

Where Weapon technology is where the Artillery Fire goes in if the regiment is artillery and it is in fact fire phase. Artillery Fire is a bit special because it is also used in naval combat, regardless of if it is shock phase or fire phase.

no no and radically no, a portuguese NEVER would say he is iberic, he will say he is of spain. and its irrelevant the greek term for the discusion, because un the age adopt, like i say, other tipe of meaning relative to anticrist and biblical discusion.

IN RESUME, THE TERM OF IBERIA WAS USED PRINCIPALLY IN THE PROTESTAN WORLD, WHO WANT IDENTIFY OUR IBERIA WITH THE LAND WHERE THE ANTICRIST WOULD APPEAR (of here come "el demonio del mediodia" felipe)
What? No, in the Lusiads the word Iberia is used without any such connotation. The word Spain is much more common though, that much is true.

No, no for all the centurys until XIX. its for a lot of reasons, principally the born of nationalitms, when "iberia" was used to refer Spain or Hispania (geografically) in a "political correct" form. The iberism born too in this century.

Can you provide references for this? This is the first time I have heard of such a theory, but I admit I don't know the precise history of how/when exactly the word Spain ceased to refer to the whole peninsula and instead to the Iberian dominions of the Habsburgs.

The Castilian traditions having the extra colonist and the colonial growth is rather pointless if you want to form Spain at tech 10 imo. Where the extra colonist is situated in the NI would mean you would only be using it for short period seeing as you finish fleshing your NI after you reach Tech 10. Personally, Ill survive without the colonist as Castile for a two to three decades in game until I form Spain and get the exact same idea in the Spanish idea group. Also, having the 'Spanish' inquisition in the Castilian group only doesn't make sense to me.

Why not make the Spanish traditions solely about Colonialism with a bit of Military/Naval (While trying not to be overly OP about it if possible) to back up its expanding overseas Empire, while the Castilian traditions should be about consolidating your hold over Iberia while waiting for Iberian Wedding event to fire eventually and lets face it, it rarely doesn't fire before tech 10.

Perhaps I'm delusional with these thoughts about giving Spain's NI slightly more of an edge with extra Colonial traditions to replace some of the existing ones, but I do think that the Colonial traditions in the Castilian NI are pointless.

if fou want a testimony of the age (that i think its the more valuable), you have a quote of the poet portuguese luis de camoes:

https://es.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Luís_de_Camões

«Hablad de castellanos y de portugueses, porque Españoles somos todos»

about modern studies about this, i cant give anithing because i am starting to study this, but my teachers, the first thing they do, was advertise about this xd.

This is known, and exactly why the title of "Spain" was contested by the portuguese, because if the king of Castille+Aragon is claiming to be king of Spain he is also claiming to be the king of Portugal (which he wasn't at that point). Now do you find any refering to Portugal as Spain after 1640? That's the point.

No, I want a reference for the word Iberia having a negative connotation before the 19th century. Camoes also uses the word Iberia in the Lusiads, as I had already mentioned.

yes, but i think thos reforce my tesis. after 1640 there was a propaganda production with the intention of make diference betwen the 2 kingdoms, identify spain (wrong) with castille aragonn navarra... and not portugal. i defend that the modern spain is not correct. to be spain need portugal xd sorry for my english i can not explain well

Are you saying modern day Portugal should be part of Spain?

Bad mission trees, a button to give x modifier (instead of real Holy orders like in ck2), no Spanish Tercio special unit like Banners or Strelsy ( They should change age ability with some colonial thing like assimilation or colonial growth), less development than Iberia region needs, not anything about Spain being HRE, not anything about beating North Africa and Ottomans to dominating Mediterrean trade, not anything about special colonial government(viceroyalty), bad national ideas overall.

This dlc is disappointing. Developers are too lazy.

I think he says that the term Spain should be used if ALL the peninsula was one country... IF Portugal is out of Spain (the country) then the country (Spain) should have another name/term to their country! Hope it was understandable XD
That makes no sense. The nationalist identities of both Portugal and Spain have long been set in stone.

Here you are

F.Bouza, “Cultures and Communication across the Iberian World (15th-17th Centuries)”. In: F. BOUZA, P. CARDIM and A. FEROS (edrs.), The Iberian World. London: Routledge, in press.

Contrary to what one might think, it is not easy to document the use of the term “Iberian” at that time. As is known, the territories of the Iberian Peninsula were customarily recognised together under the name of Spain, a geographical and historical evocation of the ancient Roman province of Hispania. In 1631, Paul Sherlock (1595-1646) and the French bookseller Gabriel Boissat signed a contract in Madrid for the publication of a new work that the Irish Jesuit, resident in Salamanca, had written about the Song of Songs. The book was intended to be published in Lyon (France), but the Society of Jesus reserved for itself the exclusive right to its sale for a whole year in the Indies and Spain, “understanding Spain to mean Aragon, Portugal, Andalusia and both Castiles” (Agulló 1992, II, 74-75). Although the events of 1640 presupposed a point of no return for the break in this geographical or peninsular conception of Hispania/Spain, an undoubted defender of Portuguese independence such as Manuel Homem nonetheless demanded that Felipe IV should cease to be called the King of Spain, “but just of Castile”, because he was already no longer the king either of Portugal or Roussillon and Catalonia (Homem 1642, 96).

The use of the lexical family related with Iberia and its inhabitants appeared in erudite contexts in which there was a clear demonstration of an undoubted dependence on classical culture. Furthermore, there was some confusion between two territories that could claim that they were the Iberia mentioned by the ancient geographers and the first Christian exegetes. One was the Caucasian Iberia, identified with the present-day republic of Georgia, and the other was the Mediterranean Iberia, which, little by little, ended up becoming equivalent to the Peninsula also known as Hesperia or Hispania (Cruz, Le Roux and Moret 2006).

This confusion not only affected the western, but also the eastern, Iberians, the ones that Luís Marinho de Azevedo had described as “Asian Iberians” (Azevedo 1652, 40). In 1588, one of them, Simon of Kartli (1537-1611), sent an embassy to Rome in order to achieve some form of alliance with Felipe II and Pope Sixtus V against the Ottomans, in whose rear his country was situated. The Georgian prince had thought that they both resided in Rome, where “they governed together […], the one concerned with the temporal matters and the other with the spiritual matters” of the world (Gil and Tabagua 1993, 213). To some extent, this mistake was excusable because, if Rome was considered the centre and capital of the world, it would not be surprising to believe that Felipe II also lived there, since he was the most powerful among the Christian princes of his time.

The worldwide dimension of Felipe II’s dominions had been constantly stressed ever since he ascended his father’s throne (Parker 2001). The resolution of the Portuguese Succession in his favour in 1578-1580 similarly made it easier for him to be attributed with an almost universal power. It can be seen why the French Calvinist Théodore Agrippa d´Aubigne (1552-1630) portrayed him as the victorious “grand Ibérien” as a result of the defeat of Sebastião I at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, which had paved the way for him to take possession of Portugal and had restored his power to interfere even more in the politics of foreign kingdoms (D´Aubigné 1867 [1615], 253). The confessional propaganda of the Huguenots who had settled in Geneva, particularly the erudite circle of Theodore Beza, helped to establish the use of the word Iberian to refer to the power (described as “odious”) resulting from the union of the Peninsular crowns from 1580 onwards. As part of the celebrations of the defeat of the Armada in 1588, the collection of poems entitled Iberica was published in Geneva, in which express mention was made of the Iberian kingdoms – Iberici Regni – and of a sovereign who ruled over the Iberian people – Rector Gentis Ibericae. In other words, Felipe II.

The use of the term Iberian to refer to the union of the two Peninsular crowns had its origin in erudite Calvinist circles, above all those from Geneva, who began to use it to discredit Felipe II (Bouza 2017). On the Catholic side, the use of the word was less frequent, although it is, of course, well documented. For example, Claude Clément (1594-1642) drew attention to the proposal that America could have been given the name of “Iberica” in his Tablas cronológicas (Clément 1642, Década II), a proposal that in reality never truly took shape.

How someone say, after 1640 all changes, obviously

I can't wait to snuff out this so called . . . "White Phoenix."

are you still not including "the great captain" Gonzalo fernandez de cordoba and Blas de Lezo into Spain events or leaders? they are the absolute heroes of the nation

This argument of whether Portugal should be able to form Spain, Hispania or Iberia is pointless and has been debated before.
Lets not be distracted from the real problems of Iberia in eu4.
Yeah, your are right. We can continue that discussion in other threads. For example, in one of my threads we were discussing that a few days ago. We should focus on other issues here.
