EU4 - Development Diary - 27th of November 2018

Good day all and welcome to a new development diary for EU4. We have by now covered most all of the gameplay content and features coming with Golden Century and the 1.28 Spain Update. Today, let's get to some of the eye candy.

As Golden Century is an Immersion Pack, that means it comes with new unit models built-in. It also contains new music focused on Spain and the New World.

First, let's check out the Units. While the majors in the region already enjoy their own unit models, we reached out to those who have long deserved their own and have added infantry models for Granada, Navarra, Galicia/Leon and Salé. Each get 4 different models, one for each Tier of unit as warfare evolves with the integration of the firearm.

Granada will do well to see themselves into the era where they can use firearms, but at least they'll look dapper until then.

Navarra may have lost her coast, but she gained a good mesh of functional and elegant gear.

Leon and Galicia, the releasable nations from Castile, both share their unit models, but keep a distinct look from their Castilian brothers.

Salé, the potential pirate nation of the Maghreb, already look like they are up to no good, and appear to have already plundered rifles.

Now the plan was to make 5 different unit packs and have Andalucia as our 5th set. As we were concepting these designs though, we felt there was too much overspill between Granada and Andalucia model designs. As such, we decided that Granada and Andalucia would share their models, and we would still make a 5th set of models, but for our new additions in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Pirates themselves have received new unit models, evolving through the ages and, while we resisted the call of Hollywood designs, keeping to a more fitting, if threatening look.

Although the addition of unit models in Golden Century is not limited to the units on land, we have also given the Iberians, as well as the Berbers, their own Ship Designs. These extend to all 17 different unit models seen in the game.

Let's use the heavy ships as an example, for the Iberians they will get new ship looks from the smallest of Carracks

To the mightiest of threedeckers.

Similar story for the Berbers.

As a final note, there will be three pretty sweet music tracks added with Golden Century. Sadly I cannot share these in all their glory right now, but we do have a preview of one of the tracks which was played during our First Look stream of Golden Century last week. Check it out here:

That's our lot for today. We'll be back next week to shed light on the ten new Achievements which will be added in 1.28 Spain.

Reactions:
Rule Britannia was a love letter to Great Britain. Golden Century is the reverse for Spain.

Expulsion of minorities and Pirate Republics, both unambiguously pro-English / anti-Spanish features, better polished than the rest of the pack are especially grating. It is no surprise people are so angry.

I can't believe I have to buy Castilian/Spanish/Aragonese/Portuguese models separately.

How about unlocking them for those that own this Immersion Pack jeez.

It does

e: Oh wait I read your post wrong, it unlocks everything we covered in the dev diary.

Adding three buttons to spend your mana on is not meaningful content. And let's not forget the disastrous Spanish province rework that showed how the developers couldn't care about this DLC and just did it for the money. 0 historical research, Asturias tag added for the sake of adding it instead of something, that even it might not have existed independent, it could actually be more believable like the kingdom of Toledo. We even had to demand a Balearic Islands tag.

BTW, what happened to Valencia and Balearian tags, they don't exist? No NI's no new units?
Let's talk about the fact that Portugal got only 1 new province that looks like a tumor protuding into the old provinces of Portugal. Portugal only got 2 new provinces since 1.0, and this is counting the new one they are going to add. Ireland got 8 new provinces.

And what about the rework of the NI's of Spain that had to be corrected because it was awful and Castillian ideas still have ahistorical flavor?
Portugal hasn't got new NI's
Berbers still have trash tier NI's

Should I complain more or that's enough for you?
Don't forget giving more attention to Mexico than Spain in the Spanish patch

Right now there are 55 negative opinions and 23 positive ones. In the penultimate DD of a DLC. This is about 60% of forum users. This, together with the tendency of generalized negative opinion (not only of the Iberian players), is this really not going to create a deep reflection in paradox ????

I edite: 70% disagreement at this time.

You really need a better unit to deal with natives, are you kidding me ?
No, i want an special interaction to send an army to conquer the new world as quickly as they do in real life, but if paradox thinks that its op change It for a fast unit that can sack and conquer in half time the same territory as a normal unit, like stepe hordes.

Thanks. I no longer feel like raging at the thought of PDX turning into EA or SEGA.

Still buying the Pack, but a dev post talking about the future of the game would be really appreciated.

Also the DD didn't mention it so you probably should edit it to say that the models will be unlocked.

Edit: Apparently they won't. Just saw Groogy's edit...dude seriously? I can taste the salt. I know that already.

I disagree. It's more like third or fourth worst. I still consider Mare Nostrum and Conquest of Paradise the two worst of all time.
Conquest of Paradise adds RNW which is a feature that has a lot of potential. If we had more options to customize the RNW and more flavor regarding it (and of course was more reliable and stable) I'm sure more people would use it.

Regarding the dev diary, I think that new events would be a much more interesting topic than units.

One of the most disappointing DLCs ("immersion packs") yet. Like many others I was extremely excited for a Spain focused DLC just to be let down. Might as well have called it the "white phoenix" or "Grenada" patch because I don't see any more immersion for the rest of the iberian nations. I am willing to pay for a decent Spain DLC. I don't want "free stuff" as someone mentioned earlier. I just don't want to pay for this.

That's a bit mean.

Eh double check my post, I might have misread you.

Don't forget colonies can't set up holy orders and you have to pay for it. And AI still can't colonize and the Poland patch already brought more events and quests for free.
Dude, all this put together is getting me depressed...

Don't forget Holy Orders weren't something exclusively Spanish but since they are too lazy to do historical research to add new things only dedicated to Iberian nations in the "SPAIN UPDATE" they decide to lock it only to iberian countries.

Why has not anyone on the Paradox team answered a single message of disagreement? The community will begin to feel mistreated, 99% are negative opinions

Don't forget adding pirates republics that anyone can add via custom nation

Better yet, 1st holy order is useless in colonies because tax is not counted towards tariffs, 2nd add culture conversion and they changed colonial AI to not culture convert to represent "the culture pot", and 3rd is useless too because AI colonies barely fight and you won't get anything out of it.

Is "order" the right word in holy order?

:( Will you guys at least consider unlocking the Spanish, Castilian, Aragonese and Portuguese models for owners of the Pack? Because this is the Iberia update, and I'd like to have proper models not the generic ones walking around. Or buy a unit pack separately for it - I don't care how cheap it is on sale.

Don't worry, there will be plenty of time for that when the next DLC gets announced :(.

People are depressed Spain ISN'T getting a tributton they can push every X years for bonuses? I thought this is exactly what you were asking for, changing expectations!
