EU4 - Development Diary - 28th of November 2017

Good day all. Today I will elaborate on the map changes which will be part of the upcoming 1.24 update. As the hawk-eyed among you will have noticed in last week's teaser, we are giving some love to the Japanese region and the Philippines, in the titular 1.24 Japan Update.

Firstly, we'll look towards what's going on in the Philippines:

North Philly.jpg

To the north we find three new tags in 1444: Pangasinan, Tondo and Maynila. While the three have distinct state religions: Mahayana, Hindu and Animist respectively, they share the North of the Philippines and the newly added Luzon ideas.

To the south we find the Hindu nations of Madyas, Cebu and Butuan cowering in the shadows of the stronger Animist power of Maguindanao. It can also be noted that the emergent Sulu are playable in 1444. Our new tags here enjoy their own unique National Ideas. We'll pick Maguindanao to look at today, because Animist Pride World Wide

Finally we look towards Japan. They received a lot of attention recently with the release of Mandate of Heaven yet we return to right a wrong with the island. Now in 1444 the Oda clan is playable just a stone's throw away from Kyoto, alonside Kitabatake and Tokugawa. While it will be many years before Nobunaga brings the Oda to promenance, they are available to play from the start with their own National Ideas.

So it's exciting times for the Far East in the upcoming 1.24 Japan update which people can expect before the new year rolls around. The update will be free, contain the above map changes, more ideas, bugfixes and more. Consider it an early Christmas present from us to you. We'll go into detail about some of the fixes and balance changes next week. See you then!

Nice update.

If they brought back Buddhism free diplo annex and made events around it that would make them more powerful again.
On the subject of balance changes..

Can I suggest moving the neighbouring claims ability from Feudal Theocracy to Tribal Federation, instead of hiring general.

Give Feudal Theocracy the ability to send missionaries to neighbouring unowned provinces, which would give those countries a (new type) of cb.

Also, tribal allegiance decay needs to be scaled back. Maybe with LA adjusted dev instead of total 'raw' dev

Concerning this idea I really like the idea of CNs providing missionaries that convert neighbors.

What will the Philippines be named after if the nation is united and formed prior to Spanish Colonization? I am trying to recall everything from history classes of long ago and not a single thing would jump out as to what my old country will be called if it hadn't been named after Philip II.

I am excited for Oda. I loved playing Nobunaga's ambition and would play as Oda once the patch hits.

I love how the first patch/update I get after purchasing this game a week ago is improvements to the Philippines, one of my favorite nations to play as. Thanks so much Paradox!

I want to reinstall the Tenno as emperor of japan. And Korea needs so more love because I think Sejong Yi/Jesong was the king of Korea in the start date. Korea musst can become an empire, if they gain administration 20 and I know it's a little bit before it was in history so.
Sorry for my English.

I would personally love a rework of Mesoamerica and America in general to make it at least minimally historically close to what it was as opposed to not at all as it is now, etc, etc..
I believe you can get it in El Dorado.
Actually no, the only thing you get there are a few barely interesting mechanics, but the few provinces and countries it features make it really not interesting to play them, as you will do nothing more than annex a few states and and wait for Europeans to arrive.
The meso-american region was actually made up of many city states, instead of unified culture TAGs as they are represented, and a much more complex tribute system than the current “vassal system”.
It could at least receive more provinces and countries, to make it both more interesting to play them or ton insert your European conqueror in a disputed area, grabbing province after province.

So was Europe.

This is a fault of how Westphalian EU4 models everything, not that Mesoamerica is singled-out for neglect by Paradox.

Defeated the Russians, formed several kingdoms, established trade routes throughout the Indian and Chinese seas, expanded their settlements, fought several wars accross the Pacific against Europeans, even winning some, especially against Spain, carried over religions and cultures throughout natural and cultural borders.

Honestly if THATS your argument the Japanese didnt do anything of note either until after Mexico became the first country to recognize them as a nation in 1888 and they became able to renegotiate their treaties with the rest of the world.
Source? Try sticking to the EUIV era most of the Japanese history during the EuIV era an isolation policy set upon...

Ok, the Oda ideas seem that Paradox is going full anime Hollywoodian mode, like really? Oda is in Prussian tier and that's a problem.
I would love a thread from Paradox explaining how they base their nationals ideas because with some nations they go full weeb mode, which is unacceptable...

Under Nobunaga, the Oda went from controlling a single castle in the middle of the Japan with an insignificant army to having a modernized, efficient military that had subjugated roughly 2/5s of Japan by the time Nobunaga was assassinated, and would have conquered the whole archipelago in his lifetime had he not - he achieved this largely in the span on 22 years.

That said, Oda ideas focusing on leader pips is silly; the Oda weren't known for most of what qualifies shock beyond Okehazama and some of Katsuie Shibata's feats, and they choked in a number of critical sieges (Inabayama, Nagashima, Odani, Ishiyama, etc.). That the economic/administrative reforms of Nobunaga and his toleration of Christianity (and his scions toleration and conversions) are largely downplayed in the set even more disappointing.

It's an impressive feat, but having ideas that make you a powerhouse worldwide is not smart, especially when the in the time of eu iv Japan didn't do anything outside of the Pacific, especially when Europe was already so ahead I don't see why they gave them such godlike ideas...

"Not doing anything outside of the Pacific" still includes unifying Japan (which was a region as big as the HRE with a population larger than any part of Europe other than maybe France), then fighting Korea (which was also more populous than the overwhelming majority of European kingdoms) and China combined (which obviously dwarfed absolutely everyone) to a standstill for several years in one of the deadliest wars in history at the time. Also things like independently inventing cutting-edge military drill like the countermarch some decades ahead of Europe. The Oda are pretty high up on the "tags that deserve great military ideas" list no matter how you wanna look at it.

Even aside from that though, Europe's edge is supposed to be modeled through the institution system. I don't see how taking away the more distinctive national ideas would be anything more than an act of redundancy.

I'm wondering when Paradox will give the Animist religion some love. It and Totemist are so bland. Furthermore, I feel they should remove the arbitrary restriction of having to have Zealots force you Animist before you can go to another kind of Pagan.

The reason Oda Nobunaga could do what wasn't that his soldiers or tactics were that superior it was that he had two allies who never betrayed him, tokugawa ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In a period where everyone backstabbed everyone these three held their oaths to one another (but not to each other's children) which gave them a very strong advantage.

So was Europe.

No, it wasnt, their structures were different, the Mexicas for example used an elective form of government where the elecors were divided by areas and nobility titles were not hereditary as they were a meritocratic society, now that was the internal structure, the structure of the Aztec nation was completely different with Texcoco, Tecpan and Tenochtitlan dividing administrative duties between them, Texcoco being more centralized with a nobility, and Tecpan being a lot more decentralized with a council.
The mayans used a more centralized system were representatives of the different tribes would elect representatives in a democratic fashion and each would have desicion power in the government.
Now, nations like the Tarascans just straight up used councils of elders and stuff like that to govern themselves.
Which was completelly different from other nahuatl cultures like the Tlaxcaltecans who just had a straight up Senate with no excecutive office to centralize power.

Which of course is different from the way other cultures like the Mixtec or the Zapotecs organized themselves with trading guilds taking over government responsabilities, which was of course, different from the way people in the Bajio region organized like the Otomis, who DID have straight up kings.

, not that Mesoamerica is singled-out for neglect by Paradox.

I personally hope not, but it IS neglected nontheless with the area laking geographical, cultural or historical fidelity, and the mechanis of the nations in the area having no real basis in history and appearing more as a parody of pop culture references-

On the topic of NIs, perhaps Korea's NI #4 Geobukseon could get a little bit of a buff, seeing as the only field the Joseon really beat the Japanese in the Imjin War without Chinese help was on the seas and Japan's NI #4 is twice as good as Geobukseon (+10% ship durability to +5% ship durability).

As for Oda, the Japanese were up against the Koreans who had done the absolute minimum to prepare for defense, ignored all warnings, and allowed them to land without difficulty. They did push the Joseon all the way back to Pyongyang but only before the Ming took note (basically if you march your troops into minimum funded enemies and stackwipe them in game) and, while the Japanese did perform excellently, they weren't able to push any further and continued to lose ground. Then the truce, second phase (during which the Joseon fleet again failed to repel the invasion force, basically if a ton of underfunded galleys engaged a ton more fully funded transports and galleys and lost), and a white peace to end all the suffering.

So I'd say maybe cut down a bit on the sheer number of military ideas (because it's a bit excessive to have both traditions, 4 NIs, and the ambition all as military focused) and grant one or two on more of what Grand Historian was referring to with religious tolerance and reforms.

Also things like independently inventing cutting-edge military drill like the countermarch some decades ahead of Europe.

This bit here, I have a quibble. What Nobunaga did with his gunners was have one fire and have several others reload for that one gunner, which while having essentially the same effect, is not the same thing. I blame popular media for this confusion, but I will admit it's probably less entertaining the way it actually happened.

When will there be a Wendish update or just "The plain descirbed by Generals for centuries as Pefect battlefield " aka Poland and Lithuania + Baltics and sourounding maybe an Intermarinum update ? It could at last fix Poland and Lithuania :/
That area already got some love in the Russia patch, and Poland's ideas are some of the best in the game.
