EU4 - Development Diary - 28th of November 2017

Good day all. Today I will elaborate on the map changes which will be part of the upcoming 1.24 update. As the hawk-eyed among you will have noticed in last week's teaser, we are giving some love to the Japanese region and the Philippines, in the titular 1.24 Japan Update.

Firstly, we'll look towards what's going on in the Philippines:

To the north we find three new tags in 1444: Pangasinan, Tondo and Maynila. While the three have distinct state religions: Mahayana, Hindu and Animist respectively, they share the North of the Philippines and the newly added Luzon ideas.

Finally we look towards Japan. They received a lot of attention recently with the release of Mandate of Heaven yet we return to right a wrong with the island. Now in 1444 the Oda clan is playable just a stone's throw away from Kyoto, alonside Kitabatake and Tokugawa. While it will be many years before Nobunaga brings the Oda to promenance, they are available to play from the start with their own National Ideas.

So it's exciting times for the Far East in the upcoming 1.24 Japan update which people can expect before the new year rolls around. The update will be free, contain the above map changes, more ideas, bugfixes and more. Consider it an early Christmas present from us to you. We'll go into detail about some of the fixes and balance changes next week. See you then!
 
A system similar to the HRE and China wouldn't be unwelcome for Japan with the Emperor and Shogun in mind later on...
Seeing the Chinese Empire "thingy" on the bottom right corner and no love for Japan has always been a letdown for me.

I agree. I am really happy about the new Philipines country, which really needed an overhaul and more provinces by the way, but am really disappointed that this free update got rushed with just a dozen new provinces, while Indonesia overhaul has been asked for a longtime alongside the Philipines

Well, I was hoping for a bigger free update as the last one was Hungary ~8 months ago. If it was the complete Indonesian region, that would be justified after we had two paid updates since the last free patch. Now we get an update with 10 new provinces (I hope I didn't miscount) ...

I bet that the update will be released on the 14th of december, because then there is still a week before christmas to eventually hotfix gamebreaking stuff.
Thus, we might have the next dev diary as well as the patchnotes released on the 12th of december before the update is released.
 
looks good now if only they could take a closer look at Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, we need more Provinces there, it lacks Detail... way to few Provinces for such a rich history of intrige and warfare in that time period... IMHO!

There was an entire patch dedicated to Scandinavia not long ago. There are other regions that need more attention than Scandinavia.
 
Oda NI is up in god-tier ... Space Marines with core creation cost reductions :eek: ... Good enough that you can just about pass on Military idea groups
 
hopefully TC merchant bug will get fixed sooner :eek:
 
I do like the idea of OPM Japanese tags with widely unique focuses. It mainly means the player can be an OPM dynamo with unique ideas that suit their proposed game, ie. colonising Japan etc.
 
Shiba's "capital" in 1444 was Echizen, not Owari. This was my deciding point in a word. If Shiba had their capital in Owari at that point, I would have strongly objected putting Oda in the grand campaign.

All right, thanks for explaining.

Due to the tag economy, I won't suggest Mogami as separate faction. However, Shiba should turn into (defacto) Mogami in the historical scenarios earlier because Oda gets Owari now and Asakura will be independent anyway during the Onin War.

I believe they already are, last time I checked the history files.

Well, I already pointed it out, but if you need me to repeat it again: "heck not even the geography is right, the "province" of Mexico is a single mountain tile, when in reality it was a huge lake housing half a dozen cities with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants each, I highly recommend the Mesoamerica Universalis's team latest video on that regard they made and excelent representation of Mesoamerica in that time (well a few decades earlier, still applies)."

Mesoamerica already has some of the smallest provinces in the game, comparable to Western Europe. The level of detail you're looking for, and the level of detail Mesoamerica Universalis use, is something that would go far beyond what any other region gets.

As it stands, just about every province covers entire region, multiple towns and cities, and their countryside (the Paris/Ile-de-France province, in France, covers considerably more than just Paris itself, including other cities). Mexico, which covers the entire valley and the surrounding mountains, is not an exception in that regard. Having provinces for each of those cities would be entirely out of line with how things are done in the rest of the world.
 
Nice update. Always wondered if there should be a tag in the Philippines in 1444, having multiple will surely spice things up there. Would like to see Ryukyu get default Japanese sprites. They were still Japanese!
 
Really happy to see the Philippines getting some love, and the Japan stuff looks neat too. Hopefully this is gonna be an in-addition-to rather than instead-of a dedicated Southeast Asia patch though. :p

Do you mean MoH ... and arguably more on Korea in terms of map?

Hey now I don't wanna take sides in this argument but this is pretty misrepresentative, Korea got 6 new provinces to Japan's 14, and that was only after I scrambled to make a suggestion thread because I was worried it looked like they weren't getting anything at all. Which they kinda didn't, otherwise... literally a single event was the only other addition, other than the unit sprites. I'm grateful to the devs for taking on the suggestions, and I don't think Korea actually needs any more map updates, but it's not like it got very much attention.

I will say I'm a bit confused why the other poster singled it out as needing an overhaul (I saw the same comment with a bunch of traction on the subreddit too :confused:), it seems like it should be pretty low on that list unless it was some quick fix to make them stop always eating the Jurchens. But I hope it gets something small this patch, if it looks like this is maybe a quick revision to East Asia in general. China stuff is definitely more of a priority though.
