EU4 - Development Diary - 2nd of October 2018

Good day all and welcome to today's Dev Diary for EU4. Yesterday we released the free 1.27 Poland Update, packed with free content, map changes, bugfixes and such. Today we're going to be talking about the release as well as our plans going forward.

Firstly, with the Poland Update, we have updated EU4 to be GDPR compatible. You may have noticed a Privacy Policy when you tried to launch the game for the first time after the update. As part of this, we also had to remove the old versions from Steam due to them not being GDPR compliant but fret not if you want to keep enjoying the golden oldies. This link contains everything you need to know to get your old version back.

Now the Poland Update has our players making wealth common and impaling left & right. We'll be keeping our eyes on any issues that are coming in from players. We already have a plan to release a prompt fix for any serious issued popping up including but not limited to:

  • Centenarian Venetian Doges.
  • Lithuanian infeasibility in forming PLC
  • Some users not being able to start the game due to missing dependencies
As well as any other serious issues which we see occurring for users in 1.27 Poland

But beyond Poland, what lies in store for EU4? Well, as I mentioned just after Dharma, we're now looking to put the Europa back into Europa Universalis. With extensive love poured into India, The Far East and the Near East, it's high time we brought some attention back to Mother Europe. Poland was a good start, but we'll be rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on an Immersion Pack for our next release. Where will we be focusing? Well, the Pet Shop Boys would be pleased, because we're going to Go West!

Next week @neondt will do what he does best with the upcoming map changes in 1.28.

Please, add a Mesta modification to wool production in the region of Castille. Please, is a great oportunity to rework Personal Unions and make them work in a progressive integration way, instead of a demi-random way of inheritation or vassal-like integration.

Please, make the tercios a unique unit type like cossacks, banners or streltsis. Please rework the council system and add some kind of "Valido", prime minister, or equivalent figure that boosts MP production. Those figures existed through all europe. Please rework colonisation so it increases development of colonies and reduce development of metropoles.

Thanks for Iberia at last.

Me at this moment

Please stop leaking our upcoming music pack.

Wondering if Granada is also gonna get some love here
Iberia? FINaLLY! Damn, Granada needs more powar. 10 provinces Granada awaits in next patch then

Any hypothetical Iberian update would surely be incomplete without love for the last jewel of Al-Andalus.

As for the accompanying music I'm expecting you dust off that meme and invite three composers for their personal take on Falalan! You know you want it.

We have a studio-wide policy that there is to be no more Falalan. I'm as heartbroken as you.

now you can sleep without fear of being judged by the Inquisition :)

How can one fear what they cannot expect?

Is the potato AI getting educated in this patch, or is it still in the works?

Stay tuned in!

I just hope they remove the border gore with Labourd.

100% agreed.

Awesome!!!

As someone who likes playing a mix of tall - colonization gameplay style, England was the only choice for me since it is too OP and more fleshed out in comparison to other western powers.

Hope new patch and immersion pack will even things and make other nations more appealing to play, and also better represent the historical power and importance Iberian countries had, especially in 15th and 16th centuries, with some neat new mechanics, missions and flavour events.

Really looking forward to it!

Great job PDX ;)

I know it's not Europe, but I hope they throw in some ideas for North Africa as well. Spain needs improvement, but every country west of the Mamluks is a clone--even the landlocked countries that might not ever get to use naval-type ideas. It's ridiculous, and given how much Spain and Morocco interacted, it would be a good time for at least a couple unique idea sets.

A great betrayal of art itself.

But on a serious note, is there a chance we will see an update to the dutch revolt in this expansion? The current implementation leaves a lot to be desired and since the event was very Spain related in history, now feels like a good time.

Yes, I fear this may be the case. 3 buttons with the same "+10 percent conversion rate" , "rebellion supression +20%". Just rename them something relating to Spanish history like you mentioned. The DLC's are crazy expensive and they don't really add any new mechanics.. just buffs here and there and upgrade this or that. Why is CKII getting the much much more creative DLCS?

Yes, the tricks of pressing "a" button to get "b" modifier and wait "x" time to get "y" modifier are getting old. I think this path was taken because any really new mechanics adds a lot to the AI coding... if you think about it the vast majority of new stuff implemented in the DLCs practically doesn't need new AI coding. I'm talking about new features, not AI improvements of older features.

I agree. Perhaps Paradox will do the same thing they did with Rule Brittania where, not only did they expand/redesign the British Isles, but also the Low Countries and France. Honestly, I can't see how they could do Castile and Aragon, without touching on Morocco, Tunis, etc..

So yes, some new unique idea groups for the North African countries would be fun, as would some historic mission trees that bring these countries more directly into conflict with Iberia.

After consulting with the discord, I can share with you the Iberian flavored (but not Iberian Exclusive) mechanics we demand be included with this Iberian Patch:

  1. Inquisition (establish it, get others to join it)
  2. Fancy Titles (Rex Catholicissimus, Rex Fidelissimus...)
  3. Support the Counterreformation (in other countries)
  4. Religious Orders (let them be involved in colonization, diplomacy and science with non-euros, event chains for Jesuit conversion of China and Japan...)
  5. Tordesillas (get Pope to give you exclusive rights to half the planet, but properly)
  6. Colonial Capital (move capital to colonies if Revolutionary enemy about to take it)

Highest time for Iberia focus, one of the most powerful and important regions of the time wasn't touched since release. Let's just hope HRE will be the target of the following big DLC
Iberia wasn't really all that important or powerful pre-colonisation. Most of their later power came from imperial wealth.

If I Iberia finally get's some attention, will that mean that the gold mine there finally get's removed ?

Since in the real world, there is no gold mine in Iberia
The gold is practically damn near the whole reason the Romans put in so much effort to conquer the region.

Brazilian? Don't you think it seems far fetched geographically wise? And what about time wise? Brazil didn't exist in the game time frame and when it was born its culture was Portuguese...

The game has American culture, wich is included in the British group and forms by a Scottish or English CN in North America. Maybe the same could happen with Spanish and Portuguese CN in South America. Plus, Brazilian culture has a huge influence from local natives and African slaves. A couple of centuries of cultural exchange was enough to make Colonial Brazil quite different, culture wise, from Portugal, even before Brazil's independence in 1822. But I understand your point :)

Hilarious, as always, Jake!

Regarding HRE needing "love," out of the box HRE has unique mechanics. Common Sense and Mare Nostrum both given additional content, Imperial Cities and Free Cities, respectively. Rights of Man gave a special government to Prussia. Achievements have continued to be added that are HRE specific. What would you want to be added to HRE, specifically?

  1. Tordesillas (get Pope to give you exclusive rights to half the planet, but properly)

In particular I think that the following case should be reviewed:

You play with Spain and have a union with Portugal, Spain has Tordesillas of Mexico and other colonial regions, and Portugal has Tordesillas of Brazil.

Portugal can colonize quietly in the Tordesillas regions of Spain with bonuses and everything, as if it were Spain. But Spain can not colonize Brazil, at the risk of violating the Portuguese Tordesillas.

I think it should be the other way around.
