HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from PdxCon

Hi everyone! We are now back from PdxCon (most of us) and landing in our new offices, so brace for a ton of pictures! Oh and we announced the new expansion! If you haven't see the trailer <3 start there:

PdxCon 2019
PdxCon this year was imo one of the best ones so far. It was held in the Funkhaus Berlin. This place was super cool, and was basically the center of all radio and recording for DDR from the 50s until the german reunification.

We had announcements (among them CK3 and La Résistance!), LAN parties, presentations and Q&A sessions with fans as well as a scramble-for-africa multiplayer game on sunday. Most of all though it was super fun to chat with fans and modding groups (several ones were there!)

In our booth we ran a challenge which we plan to be an achivement for LaR, just like we did with 30min of Hel last year. It was called "Don't Die for your Country" and was to capitulate France and Poland as Germany with as few of your own casualties as possible (and no using paratroopers). The final score was 475 casualties :O

@Voigt was the winner, and you can read about how he did it here.

We had a ton of fun and basically just crashed when we got home ;D it felt a lot like coming home from a music festival :)

La Résistance

So 'ere we go... Our next expansion is now announced: La Résistance!

Its main theme is Espionage and Resistance and the main country focuses are France, both sides of the Spanish Civil War as well as Portugal. We will be starting off by going through espionage in the coming weeks in details
For more info check out the announce post and there will probably be uploads of videos from PDXCon and my talks popping up on youtube in the near future.
also here is a fresh unused screenshot to wet your appetites...

That's what they all say, and then its gonna come out 4 years later.
Well to be fair it's christmas every year. Eventually is going to come out before christmas. lol

After seeing those offices and perks,I'm sure management expects a 10-15% buff to productivity.......

Interesting image. So you have to place your spies in certain regions, and then they generate "spying network" overtime (like in EU4) and you can spend it on different activities including infiltrations and coups? And what does "infiltrate army" means? You can spy on a certain army and their activities for a certain amount of time? or maybe you can see enemy units in a certain region? Also it seems like there are generic portaits for spies. Will we be able to recruit historical spies like Richard Sorge for USSR, who warned Stalin that the germans will attack on 22 of June, and also reported that Japanese will not join the war against USSR, allowing Stalin to pull several divisions from the Far East.

What he means is that just because that one agent has been arrested, doesn't mean one of your other agents who are not arrested doen't end up being double agents afterall.

Having arrested agents doesn't automatically exclude the possibility of having a double agent mechanic.

Which is exactly why I asked. Seriously, are people actually reading what I’m saying?

What's the battle plan of, I'm guessing early 1942, pre-second battle of Karkov.

I'm unsure but I'm going to guess around case blue given Manstein is in Crimea, Bock is leading army group south (it's not split a and b yet), and Kleists 1st Panzer Army is close to the Dineper.

Fine about LaR so far.

Will there be a true G2 map that shows enemy positions and known strengths without disappearing when the fleet leaves the area?

What about code breaking? Japanese code was broken several times during the war by USN spooks who spoke nihon (japanese) fluently. Bletchly Park breaking enigma. This is not spy stuff, this is code breaking in secure rooms on the home turf of the nation, not in enemy's territory.

During the in-office happy hour. :p

If it's not coming with this update, when is the focus tree for Belgium coming? It shouldn't be ignored, but I don't see a place for it in any other potential expansion. Maybe do a stand-alone like you did with Poland?

Will Italy still join the war in 1939 instead of June 1940 like they did historically? Will Germany still declare war on the Benelux countries in October 1939? The war expanding early like that makes life way, way harder for France than it should be, imo

Surely arrestable agents are a prerequisite for a double-agent mechanic, not an obstacle to one?!

Not necessarily.
There were double-agents who turned themselves in immediately after being "recruited".
Here is one example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_G._Sebold

Imagine being contacted by someone trying to hire you as a German spy and reporting it to the FBI/Scotland Yard/e.t.c.

You are just one step away from becoming a double agent.

Without being arrested and without anyone on your side questioning your loyalty.

How similar to Axis and Allies is it?

It REALLY reminds me of the massive, virtually unplayable [way before computers!] boardgame Confrontation from back in the ~67 or so era. That thing took up two "standard" boardgame [Avalon Hill style] maps, plus endless charts and tables to keep up with. HOI4 often reminds me of what it would become if it was ever computerized.

It was the king of the unplayable games. With computers to keep track of all the tables, charts, and other stuff and automate everything, and bringing it all t0 modern standards we have our favorite game 8<))

Good work, gang!

Clay

Axis and Allies, confrontation bah!!!! The very best and playable game was War in Europe by Strategy and Tactics publisher SPI. 9 interlocking maps of Europe, several thousand counters representing every division in Europe, 17 pages of rules and several charts. Only HOI series has been able to replace it and War in the Pacific.
