HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from summer!

Hi everyone! The whole team is now back from vacation so its time to kick off dev diaries again!

At the moment we are all working on an unannounced expansion and the 1.8 Husky Update and work is progressing well, so we can start sharing some of it with you guys and gals again. The expansion will remain unannounced until PDXCon so look forward to that. Or better yet, come join us for fun, reveals and gaming in Berlin.

Just because we can’t give the full overview yet doesn’t mean we can’t start revealing stuff in true Paradox tradition, so next week we will be taking a look at France which is getting a full revamp. We are going to be doing our focus trees a bit differently this time around, so expect new nations to get covered in two diaries rather than a single one to better match their scope and structure.

I don't have a lot for today, and spent all my vacation moving and not going to any cool WW2 places, so I will end this diary with a cool WW2 related vacation pic from @Bratyn. Bonus points if you can spot where its from :)

See you all next week for something a lot more meaty!

Nope not at all while Germany is running around with 600 divisions and have more IC than USA, USA can barely manage 100 divisions, USSR is basically at less than half of German IC and hilariously less divisions than Germany.

If it were same for all nation's axis wouldn't win so easily all the time, please I beg people to at least admit that a problem exists even if you think it's not the right time to address it.

I recognize it as a possible issue but i want to see how the issue will be once USA and UK can naval invade and even paradrop effectively. Once the war is on two fronts i think it would be much better overall.

O think AI changes would be better than just outright nerfojg Germany.

How about both? Germany no longer can produce 600 divisions but get some buffs for her divisions making it fight better.

I will equally hate it if solution for 600 German divisions is 1200 Soviet divisions, this will just make things more ludicrous.

I could go with that. They were in general technologically advanced. But again. I rather see AI buffs. Its stupid how good German AI is.

I get what you are talking about that. I don't play Germany much. I prefer smaller alt history countries like Hungary.

Finally I have no idea why people who are disappointed should not express their disappointment, is this forum only for heaping praises? Of course disappointed people will either accept it or leave it, there is literally no other option but in the meantime it's perfectly fine to express that disappointment albeit in a good manner without getting hostile.

Forums are meant for discussion, having the same few people repeat that they don't like the design decision isn't a discussion since there's nothing to generate talking points. This was just a announcement DD that the team is back from break and it's got 8 pages of people talking about how some don't like the decisions and some do. I got no problem with people saying they don't like the direction that's been chosen but constantly repeating it just sounds like whining, not trying to insult, only saying how I'm taking it so call me a name if you want. No one is denying that the Soviet front was a crucial point of the war, no one is denying that it's badly represented and no one is saying not to update the USSR. And while I get that people who've wanted a rework of the Soviet Union since launch or later might be tired of waiting, I've gotten fed up over past issues in other PDX games and still am with some issues. But as we've seem with the DLC for the game, each follow up is better than the next. TfV is the worst DLC for the game and the value of it was even recognized and they had to double the pre-order bonus to make up for it, then they made the okay DoD, WtT was a big overhaul and really made some good changes and overhauls and the last one MtG is probably my favourite. With each DLC made, the team gets more experience and can use that DLC's features to add in some interesting tie ins to the previous DLCs. Doing the Soviets as the last major rework means that the development team will have all the tools and pre-made features and mechanics from past DLCs and updates to really flesh out the eastern front. And I'll say it now, if in one, two or three or more years pass by and the Soviet themed expansion comes out and doesn't make use of any of the advantages of doing it last and is garbage, I'll be joining you with a pitchfork in the forums. I'm sure you'll downvote and disagree with me again, like all my other posts on this thread, but just try to keep that everyone here wants the game to be better, we all just have a different vision.

There’s no real way to show this accurately with the current systems. The Japanese, for one, have too many troops. There’s also no actual supply lines, meaning that the Japanese aren’t forced to stick to rivers and rail lines just to stay in fighting shape. If the Japanese could have fought in China in real life like they can in HOI4, they probably would have won. Nationalist armies just couldn’t stand up to them after Shanghai and Nanking, they were gutted and needed numerical superiority to bring the same amount of firepower to the playing field. And if anything, Army Corruption should be harder to get rid of (or keep gone) rather than making the Japanese weaker. The NRA was a mess, logistics were the only thing that saved them.

I believe that something can be done to improve the Chinese-Japanese war today, for example, that the Japanese cannot take off the penalty to fight against troops also buffeting the Chinese nations or that they have a fully defensive attitude that does not attack the crazy.
Although this conflict is true, it needs new mechanics as a rework in the resistance issue to force the Japanese to leave behind troops as well as the supply issue.

France rework? Not something I would have expected but still nice to hear! With France, I guess an Italy rework is also needed - I hope there will be some more focusses leading a bit easier towards the Novus Romanum Imperium :D

To the mechanics that will await us here, if we have France and possibly Italy, my bet is now going for partisans and relating stuff (maybe sabotage and infiltration but that would have fit more to the UK I guess).

Looking forward to see more info!

And I think your decision to dedicate an entire expansion to the Soviet Union alone is a good one, they have a lot to get fleshed out!
I just imagine a Japanese backed RFP in Vladivostok taking hold in Siberia and slowly forcing the Soviets out of Russia, there is more than enough for an entire Soviet Union Expansion! :)

Unrelated to WW2? Mussolini saw his Italy as the successor to the Roman Empire, and by reclaiming old Roman lands/colonies he actively sought to reestablish it.
I heavily doubt that he would have let a possibility float by to proclaim himself Emperor.

Did he really? I'd love to recreate the Empire but i didn't know this of true.

Yup, he very often drew parallels between the "modern" Italy of his time and the Roman Empire, and he saw his claims on Libya, Albania, Greece and the Adria as rightfully Italian since they were nurtured and heavily impacted by the Roman Empire. If it wouldn't have been for Franco, I bet he would have also gone for Spain.

Mussolini was a truly weirdly interesting character amidst the madmen of the 30's and 40's.

Yes and no. Both had been more spectators or supporters but not really players in the game. Had the Belgians been as important in the War as the Dutch had the potential of being? As far as I know their king choose to stay behind and there are not that many stories about belgian resistance like french and dutch.
The point of alternate focus trees is you can change history. For example, changing public opinion or "handling the king".

Besides, had Belgium stayed allied to France, things could have worked out quite differently.
That would have allowed more strategic options for the French, who could've been ready to hold behind the Meuse and possibly to rescue the Dutch army (instead of making a run for it to the Netherlands, leaving their backs undefended).
As Belgium, you could very well focus on improving the military (historically the army had 350 000 soldiers including 3 motorized divisions and a reserve of 250 000 more combattants).
A representation of its internal issues would also make Belgium interesting to play.

Belgium is kinda like Czeckoslovakia: full of potential, wasted in real life. And if Czeckoslovakia gets a tree, why not Belgium.

1. Mussolini took Ethiopia because he could - Ethiopia was never a part of the Roman Empire. So Mussolini would steal any colony he could get his hands on. However, after coming into war with Britain, this coincided with former Roman possessions around the Mediterranean. But Mussolini would have taken Oman and Madagascar if he could, for he was a 20th century imperialist that wanted colonies, not some Rome-reenactor.
2. I have grave doubts that Mussolini would have actually adopted the official title as Emperor, or renamed Italy into anything with "Rome".
3. Mussolini had problems taking Greece and only got near Suez (briefly) because of Rommel's Afrika Korps, so establishing some Novus Romanum Imperium should be out of the question in 990 of a 1000 Italy games.

People cry about the Soviet Union folding too easily to Germany in HOI4, but they still want to be able to do things that were completely and wholly out of reach for the leaders of the historical states they choose to start as in 01.01.1936. There was no way for Mussolini to make a Novus Romanum Imperium by 1950 and he knew it.

Considering how well the Italians did in Spain with support from the Germans AND in cohorts with Franco's troops, there is no way whatsoever that the Italians could have won a prolonged campaign in Spain against the forces that both nationalists and republicans mustered.

Also, if you want to go alt-history scenarios, it is fairly likely that France and the UK wouldn't have sat on their hands if Italy invaded a neutral, un-divided Spain.

Vemork. So the next expansion is either espionage/sabotage related or it's the trademark "Make Scandinavia act like it's still 1444" expansion that lets it form the unstoppable Kalmar Union with Jan Mayanese polar bears cavalry units and indestructible snowmen infantry to Swedeskrieg its way to world domination.
