Stellaris Dev Diary #129 - Tradition Updates

Hello everyone! Today you will be able to enjoy yet another Stellaris development diary, so that the drudgery of ordinary life gets momentarily replaced with excitement and joyous anticipation. As promised we will continue by detailing the features in the free 2.2 'Le Guin' update, and the topic will be the traditions and how they have been updated to work with our new game systems.

As per usual I of course have to reiterate that we're not yet ready to reveal anything about when 2.2 ‘Le Guin’ is coming out, and that images may contain placeholder art, interfaces and non-final numbers.

Lets get started then! Updating the traditions was of course a necessity with the reworked economy, but a secondary objective was also to make the themes of each tradition tree be more well-defined. A tradition tree should stick to a theme or a playstyle, while also making sure the bonuses are as unique and fun as possible.

Expansion
The Expansion Traditions are themed around colonizing faster, growing a large population, and generally having a large empire.

Domination
The Domination Traditions are no longer focused around vassals, but are instead focused around reducing crime, better workers and slaves, and better rulers and governors.

Prosperity
The Prosperity Traditions are themed around improving planets and making specialists better.

Harmony
The Harmony Traditions are themed around sustainability, amenities, and stability.

Supremacy
The Supremacy Traditions are themed around domination of space. You will be able to field larger fleets and upgrade more starbases, while both of them will also be stronger.

That covers most the traditions and how they have been updated to the new system. As you saw, some of them still have some work that needs to be done. They are also still prone to change and numbers are non-final and all that.

Tune in for a short stream today where I’ll be talking some more about the traditions, and perhaps showing up some the more unique traditions for gestalt empires and purifiers.

Next week we will continue to mercilessly tease you about the upcoming update by showing some of the New Technologies, so make sure to mark it in your calendars!

i don't like the flavor text for the judge dread referencing tradition that reduce crime : what if i want to roleplay a democratic liberal society ?
If you are role playing then you are fully capable of pretending that specific tradition says it is better police training, better rehabilitation programs or better non-lethal equipment or something similar.

Kinda would love it if they replaced text with flavor text that corresponded to the adviser voice you chose...Egalitarian Dominion would have different description text for the traditions than Authoritarian Dominion would... but that's just a 'huh that'd be nice'

Election based leaders frequently reach the cap. With governors, getting to high level is easy, just build a bunch of stuff and clear blockers. We will see how it works out with the sector system.
Yeah, right. Elected rulers reach a cap because they get their XP not from ruling. So much of a tradition tree called domination. And it felt funny removing and rebuilding structures to level up governors.

But is that egalitarian?

Plus what if it's a spiritual empire as well?

Just to clarify, on principle I'm not against employing good looking guys in form fitting metal armor as law enforcement, but this whole mandatory mechanization doesn't quite to fit with fanatic egalitarian utopias....
Well this is disappointing... Is the great old school Robocop Movies no longe being watched by the younger generation? :(

TL: DR: Robocop starts life as a Human Cop who gets gunned down in the line of duty... his Remains get found & sent to a OCP Lab where he gets 'drafted' into serving as a guinea pig in a experiment to create a Cyborg Police Officer using the Human Guy's Human Brain to power the mental processes, but most of the rest of the Body is robotic. OCP hoped he'd be good publicity AND be a more controllable kind of cop that could further OCP's interests... which is largely responsible for the Dystopian Future Robocop's City lives in due to mass Corporate Greed & Overpowerment. Robocop's Humanity is sometimes able to manifest itself in acts of selfless justice on more then one occasion...

Now, imagine if a Robocop-like dude was created by a Egalitarian Society instead of a MegaCorp Society instead...? ;)

& also, seriously, do yourselves a favor & hunt down & watch the old school Robocop Movies. Ya are missing out not having seen'em.

I have vague ,memories of seeing the first Robocop on TV as a child (plus a bunch of parodies), and well, yeah, a corrupt mega corporation forcefully reviving a corpse as a police cyborg does not sound egalitarian, does it? ;)

And even if the process was voluntary and resulted in guys looking like Reboot Robocop or the men seen in Tron Legacy it would still not be quite fitting for an egalitarian society without some sort of mechanic ascension...

Unless your idea was along the lines of the process creating a police force that is absolutely unbiased and just in their actions (regardless of class, economic standing, race etc of the perpetrator) due to having them programmed into their brain. yeah I guess then it'd work.
Though if you meant that then you weren't very good at explaining that you meant this what if scenario rather than the corpse stealing and brainwashing that went on in the movie.

My only problem with these trees is diplomacy. Form federation should be available at the start or through a technology not locked behind a tradition because it is a core game mechanic that helps the AI function. Putting it in a tradition tree limits players options too severely.

Yeah, I meant that. What I had meant by my wording was that Robocop was built by Greedy Selfish People, yet he was still able to hold onto his moral fiber & act as a force of justice past the point of his natural life he woulda had available otherwise... imagine how much easier it'd be Robocop-ing around under Egalitarian Rule that was seeking Justice as its goal for Post-Mortem Good Guys getting a second chance in a Robocop-like way? Plus could be Cyborg dudes, but doesn't have to be the same Robot to Person ratio as Robocop himself. The important part is the continuation of the Human Brain... which is also what separates Cyborgs from Synthetics. ;)

Edit: The Forum calls that Text Bolding? It oughta be ashamed of itself... I have to squint to tell the diff between the Bolded Font & the Normal Font...

Did you read the first part of the diary.
Yep. Sarcasm galore, a pretty good joke, and the usual disclaimer.

What? What joke?

Doesn't everybody do the snoopy dance and fall down and their knees thanking the heavens in tears that, finally, FINALLY, another dev dairy has arrived to, for one brief, shining moment, grant relief from the pain and suffering that is mortal existence?

Anybody?

No? Just me?

Like anyone is going to admit to doing it.

I went and checked.

Hello everyone!
Nope, not seeing it.

Not too presumptious to assume that the people at a sub-forum dedicated to a certain game might just be excited for news of a major update. Also, I'm getting a light-hearted exaggeration vibe from this.

As promised we will continue by detailing the features in the free 2.2 'Le Guin' update,
Seems reasonable enough.

and the topic will be the traditions and how they have been updated to work with our new game systems.
That's oddly specific, and gives me hope for a release soon as these things in DDs are usually "can't give you details, subject to change, etc.". Don't see how it mkes the devs full of themselves, though.

As per usual I of course have to reiterate...
Gonna have to arbitrarily decide we're past first part at this point.
