Stellaris Dev Diary #155 - Origins

Hello everyone!

I have just returned from a belated vacation in Japan, and although I had a great time there it is also fun to be back to work. Today I want to talk about some of the cool things happening with Stellaris this year. As many of you have probably guessed, Stellaris will announce a new expansion at PDXCon this year. This expansion will feature a lot of cool new things, most of which will be revealed at PDXCon. But I do also have something really neat that I want to share with you now!

Good ol’ civics. Gotta love ‘em.

Back in Utopia we introduced a lot of cool new features to improve how you could customize and specialize your empire. Civics were a great addition to the game (in fact I consider them to be one of the best), but they are also awkwardly split between “backgrounds” like Syncretic Evolution and “institutions” like Distinguished Admiralty or Imperial Cult. Civics have added a lot of really cool options to how you can play the game, and that is something I want to expand upon – this is where the Origins come in.

Materialistic, mechanist, mushroom madness?
Origins is a new feature that is very similar to Civics, and will now represent your empire’s background. An empire can only select one Origin, and an Origin cannot be changed. We will be adding a bunch of new Origins (some of them are really cool!) and we will also be changing some Civics into being Origins instead. Examples of Civics that will be converted into Origins are Mechanists, Post-Apocalyptic, Life-Seeded and Syncretic Evolution.

Life-Seeded Origin, now open to hive minds.

Certain types of empires were previously unable to access some of these backgrounds since they have their own set of Civics (Gestalts and Megacorps for example). Because some of those Civics have been turned into Origins, those backgrounds will now be available to more types of empires. This means that it should now be possible to have a hive mind with the Life-Seeded origin or a Megacorp with the Mechanists origin. We know this is something people have been asking for for a long time now, and it’s really great to be able to add Origins to the game.

Like I mentioned earlier, we will also be adding a whole lot of new Origins that will add interesting starting positions for your empire. Right now we have 16 in the current version of the game, and we will probably see a few more until it's finished. I think Origins will be a great addition to the game that will surely help to facilitate a lot more player stories and player fantasies.

We won’t be showing all of these yet, but it will probably be immensely hard for us to not tease a few every now and then ;)

PDXCon is rapidly approaching and Stellaris fans will have a lot of cool things to look forward to! In two weeks we will be back again with another dev diary, where we’ll talk a bit more about PDXCon.

It doesn't slow down to a crawl anymore, as every pop and job gets checked daily in a galaxy that keeps filling up with people?

A slow game pace is not "unplayable".
Ever played a 4X turn-based game in endgame? You have to wait several minutes between turns which is basically the same as the slow speed of Stellaris.

"Fanboy" arguments like this (simply apologising for subpart performance and poor optimisation) are one reason, why this game will most likely not improve... too bad! It had potential! You like the game how it is now, that is good for you, but for me it is simply not acceptable!

That's like saying an FPS slowing down as much as Stellaris does would still be playable because you could still technically play it.

That is a terrible argument.

Imagine having to play a sport, say, baseball. How long can a game go? A few hours I think? Imagine that reduced to one 'frame' of vision per second. Does the 'Well chess is a turn based game and nobody complains about that!' argument hold in that case? No. So neither should it hold for Stellaris.

It is not a "fanboy"-arguement, the slow down is just something you have to expect if you play a recent 4X-game. It is not like that I wouldn't like a faster pace, but this problem is all over the genre. Stellaris isn't better or worse than other games in this genre. I can deal with it since I love 4X.

That would mean, that 4-X as a genre is dead... well that is good to know!
 
If you like good performance in this genre you need a decent PC and you have to play 4X-games one or two gaming generations ago. It is normal, I'm sorry.

Well i run ALL other Games in my library on max setting with 60 - 90 fps... so saying that you need a monster of a pc if you want to have those kind of fps in a 4-X game would actually make my argument, that this genre is dead!

Why should it be dead if this has always been the case? I don't understand the reasoning behind it. I know of the performance problems of the 4X-genre in endgame situations and that it will become slower the longer the game progresses.

It is not dead to me.
 
Sorry, I misread. But still, performance and FPS in a shooter are just more important than in a pausable strategy game.

I actually wouldn't mind about the slow speed if it was consistent.

But when I open the planet view, it gets worse. When I look at the galaxy map, it gets even worse. Every pop, every job, makes it even worse.
Opening the Species tab is asking for trouble. The list of species when trying to colonise is a nightmare.
And the autosave ends up feeling like the game is about to crash.

Okay... so... even IF you were to buy EVERY 4-X game out there 1000 times... if what you say is actually true (that garbage performance on decent systems is normal for the genre) people would still stop buying those games at launch (because not everybody buys a new HIGH-END pc every time an NEW 4-X games is released, just so they can play the game as intended by the devs) and the devs will therefore stop developing those games, because NO one (except you) buys them at launch... hence the genre would be DEAD! So either you are wrong or the genre is dead!
 
As the time dilation set in I realized that I hadn't needed to press pause anymore. I had all the time in the world, in fact. The game was just encouraging me to think, more.

I wouldn't mind as much if it was *just* slow.

But it's slow *and* acts like it's about to crash every time there's an autosave or I try to colonise from midgame onwards.

And I'm pretty sure pops don't need to check for new jobs every day.

Well, technically a modern pc (this or last year) is one or two generations ahead. If you look up the required specs from Steam my system exceeds the specs by what? Twice as much computing power?
