Stellaris Dev Diary #95: Humanoids Species Pack

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. As said last week, today's dev diary is not about the Cherryh update at all, but rather something much more imminent: The Humanoids Species Pack

Humanoids Species Pack
Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, there has been a lot of clamoring for more portraits and another ship-set like the one we added in Plantoids. Because of the amount of coder and content designer time we're putting into the major overhauls in the Cherryh update, we ended up with a lot of extra art time, and so we decided to oblige. Back in the Heinlein update, we added a bunch of free humanoid portraits that proved to be immensely popular - close to half of games started is with some variant of humanoid. Combine with there seeming to be a demand for a more 'classic western sci-fi' ship-set with sleeker lines and curves than the Mammalian one, and the design for the Humanoid Species Pack was born. Our artists have been quietly working away at it behind the scenes, and now it's almost ready.

So what's in the Humanoid Species Pack? Here is the feature list:
- 10 new Humanoid portraits
- A completely new ship set inspired by classic western sci-fi
- A new city set for Humanoids
- A new pre-scripted empire, the Fanatic Authoritarian/Materialist Voor Technocracy, with a portrait inspired by the 'loading screen aliens' from our own official art
- 3 new advisor voices offering alternative takes on existing ethics, based on the United Nations of Earth ('Dignified Xenophile'), Commonwealth of Man ('Disciplined Militarist') and Voor Technocracy ('Ruthless Materialist'). Samples from each of the new voices has been attached to the bottom of this post.
- 3 new music tracks that are remixes of classic Stellaris songs

Of course, the 5 Humanoid portraits that are already in the base game will remain free and available to everyone.

The Humanoids Species Pack will come out on December 7th, 2017 and will cost $7.99 US dollars or your regional equivalent. For those who want to buy it right now, pre-orders are available through the Paradox Shop. To pre-order, follow this link.

Next week we'll get back to talking about the Cherryh update on the topic of doomstacks (for real this time). Until then, I leave you with these awesome screenshots:

I'll be honest...I don't give the slightest damn about the portraits, though it's nice.

I want those ships. Once I get those...I'll probably never use another shipset again. I don't care for using modded ships as they're too easily broken...and most of the existing vanilla ships are either silly or ugly. These...look damned nice.

Edit: Also...that cityscape is pretty amazing. Definitely will be using that more often than not.

If not for the voices we would have gotten only portraits and ship models for the same price and still would have bought it (Well, at least some of us would). Thus I am only glad that they add more content to the cosmetic DLCs

The audio content is what makes it worthwhile to me. Ship models, I never see them except during race creation, the ships are just small specks on my screen in actual gameplay. Portraits are nice, but again not something that really comes up a lot in gameplay, so I'm kinda "meh" on spending money for that. (I didn't buy the Plantoids pack.) But the voices and music... the advisor voice is like a second soundtrack to the game, I hear it all the time, so more variety is appreciated.

I am a little sad they charge 7.99€ instead of considering the exchange rate from USD to EUR (that would then be less than 6.80€).
You'd say "Who cares? That's just 1 Euro" but it is still an increase of more than 18%. And the voice packs aren't even localized.
Feels a bit like paying more for less.
Still: pre-ordered

I think both Endless Space games displayed some interesting ideas., with amoeboid and biomechanic aliens. Apart from the minor races, which are mostly in same mold of Stellaris.

Yeh i watched the endless space 1 and 2 races and, even if some are just recolored humans like lumeris there are some cool creatives races like harmony (silicoids), amoeba or riftborns

I find the unfallen quite nice too and find them much more plantoid that the portraits we have in Stellaris moreover there shipset looks really organic with this bark hull they have and i LOVE that.

FInally, even if i find Vodyani and Horatio not so creative on a design point (just exosuit human or pear head human) i love the gameplay they both have: nomad vampire and mass cloning empire.

So yeh you're right Endless space has really some interesting races and gameplay and i admit i really love most of the shipset the game have.

For the love of blorg, NO!
No NOOOO
NO
  1. No
  2. No
  3. No
no, no
No, no, NO!
Just..
NO!

Well for what i have looked the humanoid portrait pack seems to have: orcs, dwarves, gnomes, devil man... Well some really fantasy inspired (or uninspired in terms of creativity) portraits. Considering the fact that Stellaris is sligthly transforming into Lord of the Rings in space i will actually not be surprised to have a furry pack next... Stellaris has some good ideas and good mechanics, but the creativity throw in portraits is not one of them...
I'm still waiting, 2 years after the release, to have more "weird" looking aliens or aliens that look aliens both physically and mechanicly (silicoids, better devoring swarm with biological things and better hive mind in general, maybe some other atmospheres aliens to like the Mass effect Volus, energy beings, unicellular organism, biological mutants like zerg/tyrannids/prethoryn portraits or whatever...)

I mean i know it can be difficult to create unknow lifeforms and that you need to take inspiration on what you know. But between thoses portraits:

and those ones who are just copy/pasted earth animals there is actually a big difference:

Start the game with launch option -bajen

@Johan, you really ought to purge heresies like this. It alienates (heh) hugely important customer groups like righteous DIF-supporters and the heretic rodents.

New content looks good!

indeed, there are plenty of Earth lifeforms that have more than 2 eyes, and not just the bugs either(though they certainly make up the majority of critters that do), Starfish for example have one eye at the end of each of their legs.

and then there's this thing(and other Cambrian era animals):

Well there's also a question of what is an eye, is any photosensitive area an eye? Or does it need to be able to focus properly? Because if the former then our skin is covered in eyes, it can register infrared radiation.

I agree for the neo one, but for regular nazi, I will disagree partially, as they are basically a corruption of Prussian virtues, at least when it come to non-psychotic one. The psychotic one, on the other end, are the same metastatic cancer of humanity that the neo are.

But to be more on topic, I do appreciate this new one, as sound a lot more militaristic then the current militarist voice, which sound is more suited to blood crazed warrior then a disciplined military.
I don't know I feel at least SA has a lot in common with Neonazis, just a bunch of angry young (and not quite so young) men looking for a reason to fight and bully others.

It all looks good i was just hopeing id be able to play as space whales , aka an aquantic space pack with species eveloved from ocean worlds , fish people, sharks etc but guess ill have to wait and at the least the new space packs ships dosen't look like ggigant space dongs. and wish the turrets were more intergrated into the ships in general

planetoids ships seriusly the leafs look like pubes and a gigant dong. mainly corvettes and battleships. i like haveing plantoids but think going more for plants then trees as ships would have been better. That said i think adding this pack is gonna be good. makeing individual ship models takes lots and lots of time just don't charge a lot for it 9.99 is okay more is not good terretory
