Tinto Flavour #21 - 26th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays (some), Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at the two most powerful Merchant Republics of Europe, Venice and Genoa!

Let’s start taking a look at Venice:

The Most Serene Republic of Venice is the most important and powerful of the merchant republics in the Mediterranean Sea. It controls important trade ports and islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, which form the Stado do Mar, and many inland territories in the North of Italy, which form the Domini di Terraferma.

Nonetheless, the lagoon city cannot lower its guard, as new threats arise around it. In the East, the once great Byzantine Empire will not easily forget the Fourth Crusade and the Venetian involvement in it. In the West, the Superb Republic of Genoa and the Crown of Aragon are continuing to expand their influence, conquering more territory and dominating trade routes. And at last, the Signoria of Verona have grown to be a noticeable threat to the Domini di Terraferma.

What will the future hold for the Most Serene Republic? Will it fall under the pressure of its enemies, or will it rise to the top and become the indisputable ruler of the Mare Nostrum?

The 3 subjects of Venice are Candia, Ragusa, and Trieste. As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

As you may have seen in one of my forum posts or Reddit, Venice is now an island! Here you also have the full extension of its Stado de Mar, with all its subjects (which, at the highest zoom levels, have their name replaced by that of the overlord, as it happens here with Candia).

Venice is a very unique Republic, which starts with some unique reforms and privileges at the start of the game:

It also hosts some works of art, some of them sacked from Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade:

Here is a selection of the advances available for Venice:

Let’s now take a look at Genoa:

The city of Genoa stands out as the most important commercial port in the Western Mediterranean, its Republic having expanded its influence overseas through trade and war.

After defeating the Republic of Pisa, it gained the island of Corsica and established a foothold in Sardinia. However, this might have been a poisonous gift, as it may now face not only the opposition of its inhabitants, but also that of King Pere IV the Ceremonious de Barcelona, self-proclaimed sovereign of both islands.

Another challenge may arise from the east, as a network of possessions has created the conditions for a commercial dominance over the Black Sea, centered around the port of Kaffa; although dangerous neighbors such as Venice, Byzantium, or the Golden Horde might be a threat.

Relying on our numerous Fondaco and wealthy bankers, will Genoa overcome these challenges?

The Genoese ‘mainlad’, plus its Mediterranean possessions.

Genoa also starts with a couple of unique reforms:

Since we’re not able to have two or more rulers for a country in the game, we’re portraying the Genoese Diarchy by having Galeotto Spinola and Raffaello Doria present as characters at start, and the bonuses you see in the reform.

Genoa also starts with some Works of Art:

It also has a quite important unique building:

And here you have some of the unique advances:

Genoa Advance 28 Alberghi.png

Here you have some of the flavour events of Genoa:

Genoa Event Andrea Doria.png

Genoa Reform Great and Minor Councils.png

An old EU4 friend, coming back in a revisited form!

Oh, and last, but not least, and related to the Byzantine content that we’ll take a look at on Friday, both countries have some unique foreign buildings in Constantinople:

Genoa Building Galata.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! And tomorrow, there will be a Tinto Flavour devoted to Serbia and Georgia!

And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

Oh that's really interesting. So Maritime presence affects advantage. Is there such thing as foreign maritime presence? So say for instance that as Venice I put my fleet to patrol the coast of Egypt. Do I get trade advantage from that? Would my maritime presence in the coast of Egypt be different from the one the Mamluks get?
Short answer from Johan (I double-checked with him, just in case) on this: "Yes".

Hi, just a quick question about works of art : is Magnus Opus a higher tier than masterpiece ? Don't they have the same meaning, one in Latin and the other in English ?
I am French, and i would translate both to "chef-d'œuvre".

We want to have the old HRE-related kingdoms (Germany, Burgundy, and Italy) to be able to be granted by the HRE Emperor, as we think it's a decent compromise on the 'plausible' historical setting.
ah alright thanks, im curious how this will work out,
so no conquest option, guess a mod can fix this

We already have them; it just takes a lot of time to have a comprehensive list of dialect names in-game:

Do you have something to represent the linguistic situation in Italy? Even if regional languages remained the mother tongue if the majority of Italians throughout the period, the standard language became the official language of all Italian states.

A main figure in pushing for unification was Pietro Bembo, Who was from Venice.

Consiglio, and Gran Consiglio.
For Venice it should be either Maggior Consiglio as that is what the Great Council is called in Italian, while in Venetian it is called IIRC Major Consejo but I could be wrong on the venetian. In either case it is not Gran Consiglio.

Oh, I would die to see Garisenda and Asinelli as works of art!
As a bolognese, I'll be the first to say that those towers are not really works of art, but bland constructions built to demonstrate prestige. The higher, the better. Bologna was filled with towers built by wealthy families, so much so that it looked like a sort of ancient New York. The Garisenda and Asinelli are among the few that have survived.

But oh boy, lemme tell you about the real work of art that is the Basilica of San Petronio. It's a beautiful church, and in the 16th century it was about to become the biggest church in Italy, even surpassing San Pietro in Rome. The pope financed the construction of the Archiginnasium right next to the basilica of Bologna, so that the latter could not be completed. They didn't even finish the marble facade!

Could you tell us what are the tiers for countries in Italy (like with Muscovy in the last Tinto Flavour)? :)

Will Genoa get an event to rebuild its walls in the 16th/17th century (is there even a building at game start, like in ck3, to represent the medieval ones)? Those walls are to this day extremely impressive

Hm, the Italian characters look much more like I expected italians to look. Does "ethnicity" presets you have in this game still regional? Aka will Italians look different from Eastern Slavs? Will Central Asian Turkic people look different from Turks in Anatolia?

Kinda shame that you didn't made generic presets for European regions, but I at least hope that in terms of genetics these characters would look different.

Any content regarding:
  • Genoese conflicts for Sardinia? And in general, Genoa competition with the crown of Aragon in the Western Mediterranean sea at the game start?
  • Genoese outpost in northern Africa?
  • Genoese slave from Caffa?
  • Genoese and Venetian trading in cotton from Outemer at the game start? It was a major economic driver in the period
  • Genoa and Venetia joining Holy Leagues with Spain/Hospitalliers/Papacy if the Ottomans expand?
I'm assuming all the Venetian events regarding the Ottomans/mamlucks (Morea, Alexandria...) were ported. But I still feel Genoa lacked a bit of content and the earlier start date opens new avenues.

How would a Venice or a Genoa player stay relevant once the trade shifts to the Atlantic and countries in Europe centralize and develop better financial institutions?

I don’t remember if it was mentioned but will central banks and stock exchanges include minor mechanics or just more efficient collection of taxes?

A) Could the Grimaldi become a Building Based Country with the event about the Rock of Monaco?

B) Given its significance and status as a city within a city, Galata should probably give stronger bonuses than the Venetian quarter

C) Do Venice and Genoa also own trade outposts in other locations, representing their many colonies too small for a location/part of other cities
