Tinto Flavour #22 - 27th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at two Orthodox countries, in advance of tomorrow’s Tinto Talks: Serbia & Georgia.

Let’s start by taking a look at Serbia:

Serbia encompasses fertile lowlands and plains in the north, crisscrossed by the mighty Danube and Sava rivers. In the south, the landscape transforms into rugged, forested terrain and, eventually, the towering Dinaric Alps.

The realm emerged as a significant regional power under the Nemanjić dynasty. Founded by Stefan Nemanja in the 12th century, this royal lineage laid the foundations for a unified Serbian state, began to solidify its Christian Orthodox identity, and sought to establish ecclesiastical autonomy. This effort culminated in 1219 when the Serbian Orthodox Church gained independence.

Under the rule of Stefan 'the First-Crowned', Serbia’s territorial expansion accelerated, and the acquisition of coastal regions on the Adriatic Sea secured access to maritime trade and introduced Western influences. Stefan's son, King Radoslav, promoted the country's cultural development, fostering education and art, and monasteries like Studenica and Žiča flourished, housing precious religious manuscripts and frescoes.

Despite the many recent advancements, Serbia now faces external pressures and internal divisions. The Mongol invasion in the 13th century inflicted significant damage and conflict within the ruling Nemanjić family, particularly between King Stefan Uroš II Milutin Nemanjić and his brother King Stefan Dragutin Nemanjić, further weakening the state's unity. Now, the strong rule of King Stefan Uroš IV Dušan Nemanjić appears as an opportunity to change the tides of history.

Let’s now take a look at Georgia:

Georgian people are proud and with a long history, for their ancestors were already living at the foot of the Caucasus even before the old empires of ancient antiquity were formed. They were among the first to embrace Christianity, and they made it their flag and identity. Even after the expansion of Islam, and being surrounded by heathen nations, they held their faith and became a bulwark of Christianity in the midst of the connection between East and West.

Not even the Mongol hordes of Činggis Khān managed to fully subjugate its people, for the Georgian people rose again in defiance once the Mongol threat waned. Having been united once before under a great kingdom, the Georgian people have the potential to achieve great heights once again.

The country had its greatest splendor during the rule of King Davit IV the Builder Bagrationi and Queen Tamar the Great Bagrationi. Now, after having been divided, the Kingdom of Georgia is once again united under the authority of King Giorgi V the Brilliant Bagrationi, after His Majesty conquered western Georgia and reasserted his rule over all the Georgian territory. Even Armenia bows now to the power of Georgia.

Although still technically subject to the Īlkhānān, it in itself is an empty husk, with no one to actually lead it. Under these circumstances, how could Georgia not rise again greater than ever before?

I love it, I suggest an event to recruit The Alemannic Guard as Serbia with it's leader Palmanus Braht (I know I am biased, but it did happen). Palman served Dusan all his life.

"Zanatlije" would be better name for laborers then?
Kinda, "zanat" is the knowledge/technical ability to do a job, it refers to a blacksmith as I said but also in modern day a plumer for example. It only applies to physical labour, programing isn't a zanat (you can call it that but in traditional sense it's not), also for exaple a brick layer isn't a zanatlija but the lead brick layer is (not an engineer tho). Not every laborer knows a zanat, that requires knowledge/tutoring of a mentor who already knows how to do the job, you can't call the pesent estate zanatlije if that's what you meant most ppl don't qualify.

The difference is that in modern English burgh isn't used so theres no confusion, while in Serbian garad is still used.
Yeah I understand where that comes from but for example in Polish the burghers are mieszczanstwo (I don't know if it's in the game but it does translate to it), where miasto to this day means city. Also I don't think it would cause confusion anyways can you explain why it would, I don't see what can be confused with what? Here's a link to the Lexicon of the Serbian Middle Ages by Ćirković and Mihaljčić: https://www.bogoslovski.ues.rs.ba/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Leksikon-Srpskog-Srednjeg-Veka.pdf (page 136, medieval context for Građani/Građanstvo). Also keep in mind that this name (građanstvo) needs to be viable for the next 500 years too which i think checks out.

Sabor, exactly.
Hey Pavía, do Hajduks or Hajdús also have an associated infantry unit with them? It seems very fitting.

Also, can the Serbian disaster spawn any of the historical rump states of the Serbian Empire?
+ Based on the released videos, it appears that Serbia's shattering hardly ever happens (it did not happen in any of the released footage), so the disaster might need to be buffed, because such a serious diversion from the real timeline in such a short time after the start of the game is not good; it probably should be buffed so that it happens more often than not (especially for the AI)

I understand that gradjanstvo does mean burghers but a person who knows serbian whould first think that it means gradjani or that it's just an old word for a gradjanin, you and me know that it means burghers and non serbian/slavic speakers probably whouldn't notice, I'm saying an average serbia speaker that picks up the game not looking at our comments here whould be confused. Ultimately i agree with you that it's better then my original suggestions of trgovci and ofc far better then meštani.

Yeah I understand nowadays građanstvo eather means citizenship of some sorts* or city people. But the thing is burghers are gradjani, the word didn't change it is the context that changed, the cities changed, became bigger, more influential after industrialization, there isn't any estates anymore but the cities are still here. That change in English is shown through dropping the term burgher, but languages differ.

At game timeline, most laborers were manual workers. As far as I know, these are created through the promotion of the peasants. The promotion is somehow a symbolic acquisition of handicraft knowledge.

  • Fine with the size of the model, just don't like the placement. I think it would look better if the background image was in a portrait orientation instead of landscape. This will allow a section to the left which would include the data around and embedding into the picture to be better visible without detracting from the image.
  • Decrease the importance of the 'Primary X' titles by reducing their size while increasing the size of the 'values'
  • Seems to be lacking pertinent information that was relegated to the 'tooltip' such as Locations (urban of total), tax base, army, and navy.
Serbia%20Country%20Selection.jpg

  • Like the addition of the height map.
  • Dislike the castle chits placed on the map
Serbia.jpg

  • I like the key for control, I think it should either be flipped or rotated so that the two possible modifier locations will interfere with it less. (like here with the maximum icon
  • I would use Maximum instead of Max. (Or at least change you other uses of Maximum to Max)
Serbia%20Privilege%20Vlastele.jpg

  • Don't need the 'Available in...' line as the icon tells us that.
  • "<Icon> Serbian Hussars Regulars" <--> "Allowed"
Serbia%20Advance%20Hussars.jpg

  • Have you thought of going to a Icon based unit statistic section (like what was done with the country tooltip)?
  • If you have a list of numbers in a list where some have a trailing icon, unit, or '%' line up the least significant digits'. The ones digit from strength should line up with the hundredths digit in the rest of the column.
  • Red and green mean nothing without comparison.
  • For the goods lists, the values should have the same least significant digit within each table (i.e. change horses to 0.01 in the maintenance)
  • Can we switch to a single person profile for the MP icon that has/had been used. This will help distinguish this as an intermediate currency instead of a direct pop-type (as it may be from various pop-types). I would do this with the sailor icon too.
  • The (terrain) combat performance and terrain impact sections need help. I think if it was a singular section and maybe indicated what it means better.
Serbia%20Unit%20Hussars.jpg

  • "Policy | Distribution of Power Law"
  • What is "Prime Promotion Cost Modifier" (first I have seen it and also cannot tell from the icon)
  • 'Toward' over 'to'
  • If a list is empty the section should not be shown
  • When a policy is being implemented are the values scaled or do they take effect once it is fully implemented?
Georgia%20Policy%20Eristavi.jpg

  • The business of the background interferes with the models. Decide which is important and with reduce the size of the models (moving them into the corners) or reduce the 'complexity' of the backgrounds
  • I like the two text boxes and the differentiation between the first and the 'flavor' boxes. I think they would appear a bit more tide if full justification was used.
  • I think the style of the 'flavor' text box should be used elsewhere where flavor text is presented like in tooltips.

Feel like I repeat myself, but fear more the silence is taken as acceptance.

In the Serbian Enlightenment it is said that Dositej Obradović tried to bridge the gap between written and spoken Serbian and although he did help the main person working on this idea was Vuk Karadzic and the event more closely describes his work on the Serbian language reform. I would also like to suggest for the Alemannic Guard (German guard) to be added in the game as a special mercenary force available to Serbia if its an Empire rank.

1. I just now noticed this in the Serbian Works of art, but buildings should not be works of art. They should be located in provinces on the map instead so that way they can have proper physicality to them and not be trapped in a tab in the UI.

2. That ending disaster for Serbia sounds more apocryphal than history based.

Wait. I was under the impression that the term Hussar was created by the Hungarians specifically under the rule of King Mathias Corvinus, as he specifically chose to employ Serbs into this cavalry formation he devised.

You couldn't think of a singular word for tribesman, did you?
