Tinto Talks #72 - 16th of July 2025

Hello, and welcome to another Tinto Talks, the happy Wednesdays where we talk about Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will talk about the Inti & Folk Religions! Let’s start without further ado.

Inti

Inti is quite a unique religion that stands out in the Peruvian region:
Inti.jpg

Inti Tooltip.jpg

As you see, Inti is part of the Peruvian Folk Religions group. We’ll explain how that works further down.

Here is the panel of the religion, which may be familiar to you at this point:
Inti Panel.jpg

The most important mechanic of the Inti religion is the Yanantin, which is a value that can go from -100 to +100. You’ll mostly get penalties if you’re above or below 0, but it gives the most modifiers when it’s exactly and perfectly balanced at 0:
Yanantin1.jpg

Yanantin.jpg

Depending on the gods that you worship, from seven available, you’ll get positive or negative Yanantin:
Monthly Yanantin.jpg

As you see, the base value is +0.50.

Apart from that, the worship of each of these gods gives passive modifiers to the country:

Inti Gods2.jpg

Inti Gods3.jpg

Here we’re using one of those ‘Building Blocks’ that we’ve talked about before, the Religious Aspect, in a way that promotes the worship of a certain god, which has the consequence of increasing their effects - therefore, being one of the ways of balancing the Yanantin of the country:
Worship Gods.jpg

You can only promote the worship of one god at a time, and changing it costs Stability:

As usual, take the numbers as a matter of balance and WIP.

Another way of balancing the Yanantin of your country is by performing any of the available actions:

Note: There are 13 different festivities, with different modifiers; which one you get when you Host a Ceremony depends on the time of the year.

Folk Religions

Very large sections of the world are covered by Folk Religions, the new denomination of what formerly in EU4 were Animist, Pagan, or Totemist religions, and that we’ve been able to set up thanks to your feedback in the Tinto Maps series:
Folk Religions.jpg

Due to the huge amount of Folk Religions, we are focusing on the “Gods” and “Religious Aspects” as Building blocks for the Folk religions. We're aiming to have some baseline gods based upon 'spirits', which are based upon natural forces (wind, water, fire, sun, etc.). And then, we have some of the main gods for 'Folk Religious families'; so, as in this example, the country of Benin, which worships the Isese religions, has a number of deities to worship upon:

And that’s all for today! We will come back on Friday, as we will talk in the Tinto Flavour about the Inca!

And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

I find it incredibly disappointing that no new provinces have been added to Greenland but especially Australia, its inner core was populated by the natives and are very much habitable, and why shouldn't it get the Sahara treatment?

Does sacrificing to every gods does the same but half give yannatan and other remove?
Why not just for 2 option Sacrifice to light/dark?

Negative yannatan seems better than positive, I think id rather go low negative than positive
Is that intended?

I knew the Andean World was going to receive less care than the Mesoamerican one at least on release but the lack of integrating foreign gods/huacas into your own pantheon as an Inti country is rather disappointing.
I believe this would be accurate for the Mesoamerican religions too, much more than seeing neighbors as heretics and needing to convert them. For the Incas specifically they should be able to bring the actual idols to Cusco and "hold them captive" as a way to exert influence over subject peoples. I think promoting your cult and then encouraging devotees to make a pilgrimage to your capital bearing gifts would be accurate too, although maybe it was more of a Tiwanaku and Pachacamac practice than Inca. It's been a bit since I read up on the region though.

Why does Inti religion directly allow slaves to work with raw materials instead of permitting a social or government reform that allows this?

Why does Inti religion give a land speed boost? It's easier to accept most of the other effects.

Same with various highland regions of the Andes that, despite their altitude, have been populated for thousands of years. Also, the Amazon should have corridors through its major rivers, similar to the corridors that the Sahara has in-game, plenty of native groups used the Amazon rivers to move around and the Spanish and Portuguese colonists did so as well.

I forgot to mention it in my og post but I think that Chimu’s government rank should be kingdom rather than county to signify their strength compared to the rest of the Andean polities. Also I must emphasize again that I really think there should be more pops in both Mesoamerica and the Andes. There should be a couple million more pops in both regions and in particular for the Andes there should be more settled nations there otherwise you wouldn’t be able to properly represent the conquests of the Incas.

Also would it be possible to show what religions are considered to be in the Andean Folk Religion group please? :)

I dont like this big sun in the middle of religion tab. I think there should be simbol of state religion or majority religion.
It would look better than just big sun that seems to be important because its there dominating everything but in reality is just it - a picture with no meaning.

This seems like the exact use case that needs the custom reminder functionality.

In that while you are playing you realise that you need to kick off a festivity on 12 June next year, so you put in a custom reminder to pop up a message with custom text and when 12 June rolls around it pops up and pauses.

Of course this idea isn't new - but now we have a specific use case that will be almost impossible to do alerts for any other way. Here are some previous suggestions.

not sure if moving all the north american religions into a global "miscellaneous" bucket is a solution i prefer to just having them be represented as one generokee religion. hoping y'all have plans to expand the "folk" religions into their own groups at some point.

Are there instances where you may be pushed to favor a certain god? It might be a interesting shake up once in a awhile

I'm curious to see the population growth gods as I don't think we have seen population growth from religions before.

Was this added because the population growth in wasn't matching your expectations for the areas covered by Folk Religions? I understand the major sources think population growth in the 1337 to 1836 period was highest in the non-folk religion parts of the world (Japan, China, Europe, India), and lowest in Latin America, Sub Saharan Africa and North America. But I know population number sources differ - are you using a source that has higher growth elsewhere?

Are these bonuses needed to compensate for diseases, lower population growth of slaves and forced emigration from Sub Saharan Africa due to slavery?

One of the forgotten pagan religions in Europe

In the Tolmin location (in the game) in 1331, in the middle of summer, a "crusade" was carried out by the Inquisition against the people of Kobarid, for believing in the pagan religion, for worshipping the sacred tree and stream of their creator god.

The literature below describes that in the 14th century, in the area of Tolmin and Bohinj (part of the Bled location in the game), Slovenian Old Believers, or as they are called in the original sources, Slavic pagans, still lived in higher-lying places. In Tolmin (excluding the part of Idrija covered by the location in the game), it is estimated that in 1377, out of 4600 inhabitants, there were about 1500 - 2000 pagans, the same number of inhabitants of higher-lying places who were engaged in pastoralism and came to the valley only for trade. By the Second World War, about 120 Old Believers had survived, and after the Second World War, by the 1970s, there were about 20 members (older men), who were more likely to be outcasts and soon died of old age. I was unable to find statistics for Bohinj.

Latin records of the address for the Inquisition:
…in solempni predicanone, in Civitate Austrie, . . . convocati fidelibus.
