Seeing as the other treads are filled with mixed comments and unfortunately pleased comments are hard to distinguish there, I am opening this tread for those of us who support (or at least are not pissed off at) PI's decision to make a Japan based game.

So in short, while I would have liked ANY new GS game made by Paradox, I am getting quite interested in Japan lately and am glad to see a great company making a GS there (DW was kinda letdown in that aspect and proved that Japan NEEDS a separate game to get attention it deserves).

While I'm not sure I will appreciate this one I will follow it to see what it's all about. If it's EU in Japan I'm going to pass.

Riding Shogun's coat tail feels a little cheap to me but I think there will be plenty of time between the titles.

I won't dismiss a game just because some folks feel that PI is copying STW2. I will be frank - a PI game is bound to be deeper than a TW game, while TW is bound to be flashier. Period.

The setting is still relatively unexplored, so the game has potential. I just hope that it won't be another EU, as we already have Divine Winds.

its not shogun, TW was and will be always shallow game, and from paradox i expect much more, this will be like ck2 in japan, its not nations fighting each other like in other games, its nation in civil war, where everyones goal is to finish it. characters are important, even more than ck2. i hope this game will have high level of deceiving enemy options, good diplomacy. TW got what? tactical battles and thats all...

It will certainly be interesting to see. I hope Paradox is aware of the Nobunaga's Ambition - series. And Sword of the Samurai. The former has a few very elegant solutions in matters of style, the latter in matters of interaction between characters.

Al. I. Cuza: "addHentai" should be a cheat code to give you 50.0 infamy and change the tooltip to "Everyone things you're a pervert but secretly feels with you" :p

The game will likely be fun.

The game will likely be easily moddable into a Chinese Warring States game.

Good enough for me. :)

I really don't see how Creative Assembly and Paradox "competition" thing. They're games are different! As for Sengoku, if it's a CK-based game then that'll be awesome. I don't want it to turn out to be a mini-EU game.

P.S. I hope the Mongols are in! :D

Well, they have exchanged some snidey blows over the press in the past. But apart from that, I agree that the games are really impossible to compare with each other. I play Paradox games for diplomacy, strategy and a dynamic world. I play CA games for a fix of cinematic battlefield action.

Hyzhenhok: Also, if you want to spearhead a Zhanguo-Mod, this Sinologist here would love to help in that (even without knowing what Sengoku will look like anyway).

I love Japanese history in general and this period in particular (along with Meiji, which would be awesome as an expansion!), so I'm very happy about this announcement. There would have been a couple settings I'd have enjoyed more, but this is great too, and properly done this setting has a lot of potential. Here's hoping this is the beginning of a series of games which explore some of the most interesting settings in human history (not just European) and that the next is about the Three Kingdoms :D

And while Shogun: Total War 2 probably contributed in Paradox decision to make this game, I don't see why they can't coexist. The gameplay is very different and caters to different tastes. There is room for both. And for all the surprising amount of euro-centrics and Japan-haters in this forum, don't worry: you still have CK2, and I bet both projects will benefit of each other's experience, since the gameplay will probably be similar. We all win :)

This. People are referencing Shogun:TW way too much. Let me rephrase that: Is Empire:TW like Victoria? Is Medieval:TW like Europa Universalis? No, they are unique games, VERY distinct from one another. The setting alone does not make the game, they have fundamentally different concepts. For some reason this doesn't go into some peoples heads. And the complaint that there currently is a hype for strategy games set in Japan just because Shogun 2:TW is going to be released soon is kind of far-fetched. For one, it will take at least one year until Sengoku is finished, probably more. And on the other hand, there is no grand strategy game in the style of Paradox games that is set in Japan yet. So while I can understand that some people are disappointed by this announcement, I can not understand this mindless ranting about having to compete with CA at all costs. Sorry for that "counter-rant", but I really feel that some people are complaining just for the heck of it.

Yes, CK (2) could coexist with Medieval:Total War. So why not with Shogun:Total War?

lets drop a few personal reflections on all the comments:
- its not going to be EU3 with japan setting. its a game about characters and dynasties
- character interaction in ancient japan are very different from anything in europe/CK2 (I mean its a period where people would actually cut open their own bellies to make a point to their master)
- japanese history is very unique and interesting. my personal favorite.
- we've been wanting to make a sengoku game for a long time. I think the combination of having worked out some CK2 tech and being easier to pitch because people are interested in the period due to Shogun 2 made it happen now, but thats just my guess. Although comparing Sengoku to Shogun 2 is like comparing Empire: Total War to EU3
- I'd keep the hentai stuff off this thread because someone will probably delete it. also tentacle monsters werent invented yet in the 1400s
