Tinto Flavour #26 - 10th June 2025 - Korea and Manchuria

Hello and welcome to another issue of our Tinto Flavour. Today we will take a look at the lands of Korea and Manchuria. Let’s start first with Korea, or at this point in time, the Kingdom of Goryeo:

After the national unification achieved by the Goryeo dynasty, the glorious formation of the eponym Kingdom of Goryeo brought a golden period of prosperity and unprecedented unity to its people.

Even after bending to Emperor Borjigin Kublai, Goryeo continues to be an important power, both because of its highly educated population and its powerful navy.

Now the winds of change are blowing, as the corruption of the Buddhist ideals and the revolutionizing ideas of Neo-Confucianism are changing minds all over the country. Will Goryeo transform into the strongest soldier in Yuán's army, or will it break free from those shackles and dictate its future?

It starts with some reforms and privileges:

Of which this unique one:

It also has some unique laws:

Unique advances:

Unique buildings:

And unique units:

There are some events related to the relationship between Korea and China:

The Mongol Rule Option B.png

And of course also an event for the rise of Joseon:

We could choose to condemn them to a life of rebellion, or to accept the rise of a new dynasty, giving a new name and flag:

And of course there are many other interesting historical events:

Let us move now to Manchuria and the Jurchen tribes.

The Jurchen people inhabit Manchuria and are divided in diverse groups, including the Jianzhou, Haixi, and Wild Jurchens, that have different lifestyles —some are hunter-gatherers, other pastoralists, but mostly sedentary agriculturists.

Chinese officials have divided the Jurchen based on proximity and characteristics. Jianzhou Jurchens, near Mudan River, have adopted Chinese habits; Haixi Jurchens have nomadic and sedentary tribes along the Haixi River; and Yeren or Wild Jurchens, in sparsely populated north Manchuria, rely on hunting and agriculture.

Influenced by neighboring dynasties, the Jurchen have chiefs paying tribute to hold nominal posts as commanders of border guards.

Traditionally, Jurchen have been divided into three types, and this is represented with three different government reforms:

Haixi Jurchen.png

Yeren Jurchen.png

They have some advances available to all of them:

Another mechanic available to them is the a special type of International Organization called Jurchen Confederation, representing a somewhat banding together of different tribes responding to a single authority on certain matters while still maintaining total autonomy in most. At start, there are three Jurchen Confederations present: the Jianzhou, Hūlun, and Changbaishan.

Changbaishan Federation.png

Jurchen Confederations have laws, with some of them centered around the structures and operations of the confederation itself on an internal level, and also others that deal with how the confederation interacts with the outside world.

Unification Law.png

Diplomacy Law.png

There are more laws in the confederations, not just these three.

As one would expect, unifying all the Jurchen tribes will lead to the possibility of forming a new identity:

When formed, it will trigger the following event, with an option to choose the name for the country:
Later Jin Event.png

And of course, when managing to conquer China you’ll get another event for the option of proclaiming a new dynasty:
Qing Event.png

Qing.png

And that is all for today, although there is much more in the game for you to discover. We'll be back tomorrow talking about the mechanics of Shintō and the Shogunate, see you then.

And remember to Wishlist Europa Universalis V now!

Will there be anything to represent the unique tributary-esque relationship Joseon Korea had with some of the Western Japanese Daimyo? (Joseon dealt with the Jurchen similarly)

This is a very very interesting concept that could be used for many other parts of the world with such tribal confederations. Are there others like this?

This is a variant of the Five-Colored Flag used by the Republic of China in 1912, representing the five major ethnic groups of China—Han, Manchu, Mongol, Hui, and Tibetan—symbolizing the "Harmony of the Five Races" (Wǔzú Gònghé). It has no connection whatsoever with any alliance involving the Jurchens (form manchu). If drawing a parallel to Europe, the relationship would be akin to that between the Golden Horde and the Soviet Union—there might be some historical linkage, but it is virtually negligible.

You know what else is a confederation ? Switzerland.
Did this DD contain a tease for the Alps ?
Didn't Johan say they were considering making the Swiss confederation an IO? I like the idea, but it's going to take some dedication - 300 years of patiently increasing your butter exports as Zug before finally getting the 'unite the cantons' decision...

But taking a state all the way from hunter-gatherer Jurchen tribe to Qing Empire does sound like a blast.

I mean, Ireland has High Lordship as an IO, so I expect to see something similar there as well.

In fact, due to Nurhaci's lack of knowledgeable ministers, he did use "Later Jin" as the country's name. Perhaps the Jurchens in the game were more knowledgeable and did not make a mistake.
They are both fine, it's still debated to this day if they officially used it with or without the later, but since the game starts in 1337 and the is no "eralier Jin" dynasty I think just using Jin is enough, also Later Jin sounds really weird in englishto to say for me

They are using a rectangual version of a Jin banner, though the colours are in wrong order

For me, if the ruling family was Wanggiyan, the more proper name for the new dynasty should be Jin.

Please reconsider the event texts "Manchurian state of Jurchen origins" and "We are the Manchurian first and foremost" text option Replacing "Manchurian" with just "Manchu", is a much more natural option. It is like calling someone from the British Isles Britainian, from Ireland Irelandish, from Germany Germanian, etc. Unless Manchurain is specifically emphasizing the geographic localtion, which still does not make sense since Jurchen identity is tied with the region and there should be no need to emphasize on the geography at all. (Example, if Trebizond conquers Greece and Anatolia, and the event ot rename to Byanztine/Eastern Rome/Whatever reads "Trebezonian state of Pontic origins" and "We are Trebezonian first and foremost")
Fixed, changed the adjective of "Manchu" to be just "Manchu".

I'd like to suggest again an event or advancement for teaware, to quote 2 websites:

'
The Korean masters worked in Japan and influenced the Japanese styles of pottery. In fact, Japanese tea master Sen no Rikyū used Korean style pottery as he perfected his style for the Japanese tea ceremony. Not only did the Korean styles influence Japanese pottery, but the kilns were used as well. From e-yakimono.net:

The noborigama (chambered climbing kiln) was introduced from Korea to Japan -- via Karatsu -- in the 17th century and forever changed the ceramic landscape. It allowed various glazed wares such as madara-garatsu (speckled straw-ash glaze), chosen-garatsu (Korean-style, two-tone glazing), e-garatsu (painted) or kuro-garatsu (black) to be created on these shores.

If you'd like to learn more about the Korean influence on Japanese pottery, you can search for info on Hagi ware, Satsuma ware, and Arita ware.
'

or this entire website:

Korean teaware was internationally renowned. But of course not just Korea deserves teaware events/advancements but Japan and China too. See for example this article:

Tea is important!

I'm sure someone mentioned it already yesterday but shouldn't the Shenyang Circuit...well, own it? Shenyang location that is. Or if you need to keep that Manchu ULM then split a separate location form it and then give Shenyang location to Shenyang Circuit.
The crude division of Northeast China by EU5 has already led to many ridiculous results. Nevertheless, there are still many people who are unfamiliar with East Asian history opposing the idea of subdividing China.

Also noticing this interesting detail: a dimly glowing background for the character frames that I have just noticed! I personally love this representation of characters in a frame for the events.
I still wish for the background image to be reset into default brightness, and have the front elements to have deep drop shadows or sth tho.
