Whenever I try to save on 1.09 it crashes! This is very annoying, especially when you are in the middle of the game, you need to leave, so you save it and...wham! there's that good ol' windows 98 desktop. When it crashes the music continues to play aswell and does not turn off unless you turn the game back on, restart the comp., or simply turn off the speakers. there is no point in me ever playing the game (unless I have 5 hours to spend) if every time I want to save it quits. Please can someone help????

I have the same pronlem with the Swedish 1.09 patch. Couldn't find anyway around it, so I installed the 1.08 patch again and at least it works - albeit not perfectly.

I have this same prob. 20 GB free. Game crashes on saves. Trying to play the '3 mice' scenario. Installed game, 109 patch & the baltic.exe scenario. Game starts w/ music, even tho set to off. I turn music on, then off, that is then fixed. Try to save game, crashes to windows ME desktop (no error displays). Only one of the two save files is present & it has zero bytes. This has happened three times w/ this scenario. 1 G tbird, geforce 2, sblive. Game is a nice concept, but...:(

Well, no reply from anybody. So here's some more info. I did an uninstall, manually deleted the misc files that the uninstaller didn't, did a reinstall, then installed the 109NA patch. Then started each scenario, let it run for one year to the following January (or a month or two more if it would've given me a savegame name conflict) w/o doing anything more than using the enter key to clear the popups and then tried to save the game. I left all the options alone, the only thing I did was use cntrl + to set the game speed to its highest setting. In between each trial I shut the pc down & rebooted since the game has a history of memory leaks. Here are the results:

"Three little mice" played Prussia, crashed to desktop.

"Thirty years war" played Netherlands, saved ok.

"Age of mercantilism" played Russia, saved ok. (maybe. see below.)

"Age of enlightenment" played Prussia, saved ok.

"Great Northern war" played Sweden, saved ok.

"Age of revolutions" played US, crashed to desktop.

"Fantasia" played Ukraine, saved ok.

"War of independance" played England, crashed to desktop.

"War of Spanish Succession" played Prussia, crashed to desktop.

I then ran back thru the scenarios, this time in the order as listed in the game trying a different country than in the previous trial. Same methodology as before.

"Age of revolutions" played Prussia, crashed to desktop again.

"Fantasia" played Mugal, saved ok again. (I saved this one twice, I don't know why.)

"Great Northern war" played Poland-Lith, crashed to desktop, previously (as sweden) had saved ok.

"Age of enlightenment" played Spain, saved ok again.

"Age of mercantilism" played Turkey, saved ok again.

"Thirty years war" played Austria, saved ok again.

"Three little mice" played Poland-Lith, crashed to desktop again.

"War of independance" played US, crashed to desktop again.

"War of Spanish Succession" played France, crashed to desktop again.

I then tried the Grand Campaign, once as Poland-Lith, once as England. Both saved ok.

Tried the "War of Spanish Succession" yet a third time as Spain, & again, it crashed back to the desktop.

So it looks like the grand campaign, the thirty years war, the age of mercantilism, the age of enlightenment & fantasia may be playable. & possibly the great northern war, if you avoid Poland-Lith.

The save files generated look like this (in order created):

The one oddity I see here is the Russian save file. (Only tried russia once, in the first trial of the "age of mercantilism", & it saved successfully. By successful, I mean the game did not crash & return me to the desktop. I have not tried to restart the game with ANY of these save files.) The .cfg seems appropriately sized & in the right time sequence, but the .eug is both empty & has an inexplicable (to me anyway) timestamp. I will happly email any of these to tech support if they're interested.

Except for the "great northern war" it seemed to either crash or save consistently dependant on the scenario. Perhaps someone smarter than I can see a pattern in something here.

One other question/complaint I have. Why is it that every time I reboot after attempting to play this game windows setup has to update my system config files? I have NEVER seen a game cause this behavior before. I've only seen this after either installing new hardware (modem, nic card, etc), or new system software (a windows update, a browser update, new video drivers, etc).

I really want to try this game. I really think I will like it if I can just play it.

Any ideas or insights would be welcome.

Thanks,

John J

save game problem in version 1.09

I also have a save game problem. However mine is on the load phase. I have only tried the American Revolution scenario. While I can save at any time, when I attempt to load the save file the game hangs. After clicking on the save game file the screen freezes. I am running on Windows 2000 SP1 and I have 256 mgs memory and 5 gigs free hard disk space. I have installed 1.09NA. This lock up occurs whether I do it from the single player menu or from in game. Also I am noticing some kind of memory leak. After 4 hours of play the mouse cursor starts to skip and then after another 15 minutes the game will crash back too the desktop. If I stop playing quit and reload the problem doesn't occur, however since I cannot restore a save state this is a problem. If gyou ive me a white paper or a debug version I could probably tell you what kinds of things cause the leak. Or you could just run bounds checker in your test environment with a debug version, and find out internally.

Ok, I'm puzzled too. (& a bit ticked as well, the message board just ate my last reply, & silly me, I didn't take the time to copy it to notepad before submitting it. Live & learn)

Is there a debug switch that I can set on the command line to force the game to write an execution log file that perhaps someone from your programming staff can use to figure out what's going on? I see three files (netlog.txt, log.txt & debug.txt) in the main game directory that look as if they might be used for this purpose. Since they have current timestamps, I assume that the game opens them up as a matter of course. However, they're always empty, even after the crashes.

If there is any other info you need from me (hardware, driver, config, purchase receipt, etc) please let me know. If there is anything I can try from this end (settings, a particular scenario and/or country, etc) please let me know. I'll try anything short of removing/changing hardware. (Not because I can't, but because I won't)

Otherwise you might try testing on a hardware configuration that comes just a *little* bit closer to mine. I very much doubt that it is strictly a winME prob. Video card/driver, sound card/driver and/or directx, maybe.

I also would like to know why it is that every time I reboot after attempting to play (crash or no) this game windows setup has to update my system config files? I have NEVER seen a game cause this behavior before. I've only seen this after either installing new hardware (modem, nic card, etc), or new system software (a windows update, a browser update, new video drivers, etc).

Thanks,

John J

Still needs a fix

Hello Oscar,

Just want to report that I am also experiencing the save crash problem with the scenarios mentioned by the other . I thought it was just a problem with my machine reinstalled the game twice until I read these threads. Hope you can recreate this problem soon and include in the next patch.

Cheers,
John

Did you install IGC or any other scenarios? Playing the other scenarios after you install the IGC can cause problems since it modifies some of the files..

Johan is correct about the crashes to DT if you are trying non IGC scenarios after installing an IGC patch. If this is not it, and you are running a "pure" Paradox patch of 1.09, my suggestion would be ditch it altogether and wait for the next patch. 1.08 is not perfect but at least it works most of the time and we have, with experimentation, also developed a number of things that appear to make it fairly playable in MP on true interenet games even over long distances and around the world. I have experienced no save trouble and no inexplicable crash to DT in solo unless running IGCs.

If you can't find a site to DL 1.08 from, please e mail me and i will get you one (sorry, I only have the NA version).

Thanks Folkstone, nice to know I'm not alone.

I haven't tried installing the IGC yet. All that I have installed is the original game & the 1.09 patch.

I've downloaded & installed the latest set of patches from mickeysoft for ME as well as the latest drivers from creative labs & nvidia. (so much for saturday...) Game still crashes. I've tried lowering the hardware graphics accell & turning it off completely. Still crashes. Tried removing & reinstalling audio/video compression under windows multimedia. Still crashes. Tried setting the desktop to 800x600. Still crashes. But only for the scenarios mentioned in my earlier post.

I tried running Dr Watson (found this under 'tools' in the mickeysoft sysinfo util) & this is what it shows after a crash to the desktop:

Rio, thanks for your offer, I may take you up on it. For now I'll leave 109 on & try playing out the "great northern war" as russia. So far I can save & reload it ok anyway.

Thanks for your help guys,

John J

Not to pile on or anything, but I'm experiencing the same problem with 1.09 while playing the War of Independence scenario as the United States.

Also crashed on save while playing Great Northern War as Denmark.
