I just got Hearts of Iron. I click single player, pick my saved game, which is the Grand Campaign, to play. It takes over 15 minutes for the game to open up. Is there anything I can do to cut down on the time it takes to get to my game? I renamed the one video file to stop it.

Here is some information, I hope it helps. I do have an old computer (2001). Its a pentium III 600 MHz with a 100Mhz external bus. Windows 98 SE. I only have 20 GB hard drive and 1.27 GB left of space. My harddrive is a IBM 7200 RPM 20.4 GB Ultra ATA/66 Hard disk drive, Video Card: RIVA 16MB TNT-2 M64 AGP Video Card. Memory 256MB.

I just had to clean of virus and spyware and Have a program that does it for me. I expect it just that my system is to old for this game.

After it opens, it works fine. I just have to go find something else to do while I wait.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

I have similar computer in my weekend home. The loading is much faster (about 1-2 min) so probably some progs on background are the problem. Dont expect wonders from your computer tough. You will be able to play, but the speed will be slooowww.

On your particular hardware/OS configuration, loading should not take more than a couple of minutes. If it takes siignificantly longer, the validation process of the save game loader consumes too much time.

Most likely this is caused by excessive swapping of virtual memory, an indication that your Windows 98 SE is low on swappable physical RAM. During loading of a save game (which is typical some 13 MB in size), each and every entity in there is checked and validated against both the other contents of the save game file and the game's database contents. This causes numerous memory references in a more or less random pattern (from the perspective of the memory controller), and can result in many, many page misses when only a small fraction of the game's data can fit in physical memory at any given point in time.

Here http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147392 are a couple of pointers to improve the configuration of your system.

The link is to his own excellent FAQ on the matter, it is in the Victoria forum but applies equally here.

No luck yet

I changed the name of the file, put it to 16 bit and closed everything in my task bar. Still no luck. It still takes 15 minutes to open. I guess I will just have to live with it, until I upgrade my computer. I think the issue is my computer has very little memory or "space" for the game. My computer is full to the brim.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Nothing specific pops out that has not already been talked about.
But there is not a newer driver than the year 2000 for your video card?

A good indication of the size of the problem can be obtained by running the system monitor. That (when it's installed) can be found under 'start menu', 'programs', 'accessories', 'system tools'.

Run it, and use 'edit', 'add item', 'Memory manager' to add the item 'locked memory' to the list of monitored information. After a few seconds, the program will report how much locked memory the Windows Kernel has. Locked memory is the amount of physical RAM that is permanently set aside by Windows for internal use, and thus will never be available for any application, game or otherwise.

A high value for locked memory (like 100 MB or so) is an indication that Windows + all drivers allocate too much. Ideally, on a 256 MB system like yours, you will want locked memory to be less than roughly some 40 MB.

40MB

Come now Bill Gates has assured us in the past that no one could possibly need more than 640K. :)

J/K aside thanks for the tip.

To follow-up on this.

I just did a reference measurement with my second PC. This one is running at 450 MHz, but does have 384 MB RAM installed. The load time of a scenario/save game is under 3 minutes. And this rig isn't even tweaked to the hilt (105 MB locked physical memory), as it normally serves only two functions: burning audio CD's for use in my car (in case you are wondering, that's fully legal in our country), and serving as a test bed for MP testing of Paradox games (I can hook it up to a second router, and thus have a second connection into v-net ;))

keep us updated.

Defragment your disk

Remove first any useless things from your drive to save space (and defragmentation time)... temporary files, explorer cache, garbage folder, Victoria... (just kidding)
Then defragment (right click on the drive icon in Windows explorer > Properties > Tools...)
