Would my mod which I plan to upload today or tomorrow be illegal to upload to megaupload? On a side note is megaupload legal?

I used no music and changed most of the entire game and am using a modified DH Full folder. I changed ai for most nations, added new events(and deleted vanilla ones), and am using SOME vanilla files, if only because they don't need to bee changed as well as I really don't feel like sorting out all the vanilla from the modified files.

"All files that do not violate our terms of service (WHICH IS THIS) or the laws of concerned countries. This means that files violating copyrights, or containing pornography, are forbidden and will be removed as soon as we notice."

Interpret that as you must.

Though, I strongly recommend not using Megaupload, as it is not very "non-premium-user" friendly with wait times and a limited amount of uploads per day.
Mediafire is free, has a better file manager, uploads faster, and lets anyone download infinite files per day.

can someone who works for Paradox please tell me It is legal?

and, furthermore, will I go to jail or get sued in court if I accidentally violate copyright law?

I have worked so hard on this mod I don't want to give it up. All I wanted was to make a Kaiserreich-style mod for all to enjoy.

I have no music, modified almost every file, and am not making money from it. Heck, the map, nations, etc. have NOTHING to do with the vanilla game. And if the punishments were severe, would not every modder on this forum be in jail?

just a suggestion: you might want to at least separate the *folders* that you've edited even if they do include some unmodified vanilla files.

There's no way in hell they'd be okay with you uploading a fully functional(albeit modded) install, .exe and all.

You're greatly overthinking this whole thing. You think the folks who made FODD care about getting yelled at by Bethesda for using Fallout material, for example? Every mod here borrows form the core game, they want you to take from it. That's why they include a modding documentation kit in the game.
Most mods use the core music, do they have to ask to use it? No. Do they ask to use the default SKIF in their project, nope.
Really, as long as there are no swastikas or the mod is filled with hatred/porn/explicit material, you're in the clear.

And how on earth would they sue you? A Swedish company would have a hard time extraditing an American (especially when you're doing nothing wrong, and when it's usually American companies trying to get the Swedish computer thieves).

I must mention that I am technically almost an adult. Is it legal for a "minor teenager" to use file sharing websites? Plus, how in the world do I sort out the vanilla from the modded files, esp. because the modded files depend on the vanilla files???

Can someone get a paradox employee to assuage my fears here?

Again, when all who want my mod get to download it, you will realize that the game is radically different from the vanilla game. I promise. It will be really fun and exciting.

As long as you don't make a profit on someone else's game without their permission, all mods tend to be legal.

Darkest Hour itself is a mod in my eyes, though it has the permission and blessing of the Paradox company itself.

I doubt Black Hawk helicopters will show up outside your balcony with RPGs ready to shoot over a mod... First of all it's legal, second of all even if you accidentally use copyrighted music I doubt they'll sue you for millions of dollars & send FBI agents to your door, then they'd have to also arrest the billions (Yes, Billions not Millions) of people that have listened to music that wasn't purchased for $1.99

PS: Please add music, Kaiserreich w/o music is really dull compared to Kaiserreich with music. If needed I can get you a music pack with socialist & fascist themes.

I basically have a bunch of national anthems for nations like France and Britain and old Socialist songs.

I always turn music off in KR. it distracts from the game and gets grating after hours of listening to it.

Do you have to be 18 to use file sharing btw

Why are you so worried honestly, it's a filesharing website just upload the file & kaboom. If they ask you for money just use another one. Facebook for example 'legally requires' or required people to be over 13, yet when I was in Grade 7 (11-12 years old) EVERYBODY had it & nobody went to jail or got fined $50,000,000...

PS: The guy above me has a mod that uses content from the Earth series (Earth 2150, etc) yet I doubt he typed that post from jail or from a torture chamber... Honestly that's like asking if you could go to jail for talking to someone without their permission...

Even if you do have something truly illegal in the mod, the chances against the Five-Oh dropping the hammer on you are astronomical.

I'll give it a shot later tonight. Busy with my minimod atm, though.

"Hello U.S. government, it's the Swedish special forces. Yes, we'd like to extradite someone from your country whom we only know goes by the name "bean1". Why? Oh, he uploaded a mod to a file-sharing website for a strategy game by Paradox Interactive. And... Hello? Hello? You still there? Hello?"

Every mod uses either Mediafire or the god-forsaken Megaupload to share their mod, you seriously need to relax, it's a little silly. I'm heavily against illegal activity against Paradox and have done several things to stop pirates against them, so trust me on this, bub.
