If you're referring to Task Manager (the windows you get from pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete), you can usually shut down any task in the Applications tab without hurting your basic system.

Don't use End Process on the Porcesses tab though - it's a "dirty" way of shutting down a program and many of the tasks are system tasks which should not be shut down. Only kill processes in this way as a last resort, ie. if an application crashes or hangs.

If you're referring to which Services you can do without, do a search on Google for ie. "necessary xp services", and you'll get links like this one :)

Thanks for your help., but I never see anything running under applications; everything seems to be a process. It was a lot easier under windows 95 -sigh
