I suggest you do a full clean reinstall. Move any valued save games elsewhere, and manually delete the CK2 directory that GG created, and also the ones under MyDocuments. Install CK2 again from GG (preferably to somewhere outside the system path like c:\games\ck2\ ) and then install 1.04 to that same place. Let us know if that helps please.

I had the same problem, i tried re-installing and stuff and it didnt work. I fixed it by going into the documents and deleting the settings text document, however all this has done is allow me to get to the menu screen. Now when ever i press a menu button it freezes.
To me it freezes on different places during the load screen. Sometimes it doesn't freeze, and I'm able to play, but mostly it freezes. It's very annoying.
Can EVERYONE still having the hanging/crashing problem that's new with 1.04 please post their dxdiag.txt files - only from the start of the file down to the end of the "Sound devices" section is necessary, for brevity's sake. Thank you.
I am having this same problem but with the Steam version, since I downloaded 1.04b. Working on getting my dxdiag.txt files now.
