Alliance question

I'm playing Russia in a GC. We have a royal marriage with Hungary and +14 relations. The choice to join an alliance with them is grayed out so I can't even ask. I have not sent a diplomat there recently and other choices are not grayed out.

Yet with no ties to Georgia and relations at -200, I can at least ask them for an alliance as the choice is not grayed out. Can anyone explain this situation? I don't understand it. Thanks.

Are they already in an alliance and aren't the leader ? Are they the vassal of someone ?

Hungary does have a military alliance with Venice although I don't know how to tell who is the leader. Anyway, that must be it. Thanks.

Venice prolly is the leader then. Go to Venice and ask to join the alliance if that is what u want.

I don't know how to tell who is the leader.

In the ledger, the first country listed for an alliance is always the leader (during peace).

Also just let ur mouse hover over the alliance options. It gets mentioned there too.

Probably a dumb question but is the alliance leader different during war (the country that declared war I'd guess) ?

Conserning that war (and that war only) the first country to declare of be declaerd war upon is considerd the alliance leader.
