Hello everyone, I picked up this game after a long time off.

As a one province count in Ireland, I just went through 3 wars in which my ally didn't help me. 2 were offensive, 1 defensive. What gives? How can I tell if an ally will join the fight?

On an unrelated note, is there a way to turn of diplo vassalization? England conquered Ireland without setting foot on the island, which is a bit annoying.

1. You can't ... only think you can rely on is that your ally is useless to you :) ... only thing they are useful is as a potential deterrent if you are a small realm. Allies are under no obligation to join a war (like in EU3) ... and that goes for you too. You might not want to get dragged into an unwinable war by a stupid ally.

2. No ... you can't turn it off ... but sounds odd, that England would Diplo-annex, as I believe the AI doesn't do that.

What version of CK are you playing?? ... do you have DV expansion installed?

I have DV.

Is there a way to get odds of whether an ally will join? Did I have a string of bad luck or was this par for the course?

Well if you are using DV, then I think you haven't applied the last of the beta-patches from October 2008 :) ... since that fixes some issues with random vassalization.

Hopefully that should fix your diplo-vassalization issues, and keep England out of the isles, with at least having to invade first.

You are right--I haven't. I'll try the patch.

Are you sure the patch fixes this though? I read the description of all the things the patch does, and it doesn't have that listed as one of the changes.

There is another way you can use ally - by helping him in war and vassalizing his enemies. I always try to become an ally of disrupting kingdoms such as Bizantium or Germany to conquer lands of their rebellious vassals.

I am very sure ... having played DV since 2.0, I have seen the bug and seen the fix ;)

It would be this one:

- Relations will no longer change dramatically at each reload.

This problem meant that each time you reloaded a game, the relations value would go up, so eventually all christian realms would have +200 relations with each other, which would make the independent counts and dukes pledge to the most powerful relam ... so you would see irish counts pledging to France or Germany and Russian realms pledging to Byzantium etc.
