Can someone plz help me? I am very frustrated!!!

I have two older cp:s but EU won't work on one of them, and that's the better machine!! On my
200MHz with 32MB Ram with windows 95 it runs ok. It's rather slow but it runs. But when I try
to run it on my 233MHz with 64MB Ram with windows 98 it won't work!! Why's that?? I have
even installed windows service pack no.1 for windows 98. You can start a game as usual but
when you're set to start on 1st of january the game..well it don't actually frezees but almost.
The mousepointer is very slow in moving and clicking, and the date doesn't change plus the
computer keeps "thinking". Why?? I have runt the installation program as the same way I did
with my Win 95 machine and I have encountered no erors messages. I have tried to run it with
patches 1.07, 1.08 and the most recent one, still with the same result! Can someone pleez
help so that I can run my game on at better machine...I'm desperate. Tnhx in advance.

There's MUST be someone who has any ideas what I should do? Please reply if u have slightest idea what may cause this problem and how I can fix it.

Come on guys you're the brightest of all 'em geniuses on net!! Pretty pleez? I can give you cookies, or even start singing "Rule Britannia" dressed in a scottish skirt (I know there's a word for that but I still think it's a skirt). Or I could try to run around in ancient viking helmet screamin "Tungur Knivur" and other jibberish. Or I can crush peoples heads with me bare finger's (for all of u The Kids In The Hall fan's) and I can even salute the independent republic of Skaane's flag! But pleez help! Now u realy now how desperate I am. help?

Whoa! Unfortunately, I am no hardware expert, but it sounds to me like a hardware problem. Graphics card, maybe? I run the game on Win98 and have no problems like that, so it probably isn't the OS.

Graphics card? umm..how can I check that without smashing my computer and look at the stuff that is inside?
btw can graphic cards really cause that kind of problems? I'm no expert either, and I've never heard of a problem like this.

Anyway thnx for trying to help me out on this von Curow. :)

I agree. Sounds like a hardware problem. Graphics or sound card may be the culprit. Check to make sure that your monitor supports 16bit high color at 800x600 pixels. Your graphics card MUST have 2mb of video ram to run the game properly. Also, check to see what other applications are running in the background. This can significantly slow down your computer. Turn off your virus scanner and don't run anything else while running EU. Push <ctrl> <alt> <del> and close down every application except explorer and systray before running EU. That may free up some badly needed system resources. Also, check to see if your system bios is updated. You can usually get an updated bios from the manufacturer of your computer's website. Also, if your bios is configured badly, this could be a problem as well--you may need to call the tech support to ask them how to configure your bios correctly since all bios are different and are frequently pretty technical. Lastly, check to see if Windows is controlling your virtual memory. You can do this by right clicking on My Computer and going to properties. Then go to the performance tab and click on virtual memory. Let Windows control it. Also, you could check to see if any of your hardware is conflicting. Right click on My Computer, go to properties, and go to the device manager. If there are any items on the device manager that have yellow exclamation points (!) by them, this means that your hardware is conflicting and needs to be corrected. Often a call to some friendly tech support can remedy this problem.

If all of this fails to resolve the issue you are having, you could take the 64mb of ram out of your computer that doesn't work and put it in the computer that does work. The game will run much better with 96mb of ram than with 32 or 64mb.

Hope something in here is of use to you. Good luck.

I also use Windows98, have the same computer specifications (233MHz and 64MB RAM), and encounter a similar problem, but very rarely. This happens on all your games? In my case, if this happens, I have to click on some other province and the problem dissapears or I just save and reload the same game. Also, my experience is that EU sometimes slows down after some time. You may want to restart the computer. There may be a memory leak.

Good luck!

:)

Some people call the scottish thing a kilt, but to me theyre grown men wearing catholic schoolgirl uniforms.

About your problem: The only real solution is to go out and get a new computer. I was in the same boat as you. For years I was stuck with a 150mhz packard bell with 32 ram. I tried getting new video cards, ram (it came with 16 ram, if I recall correctly, yuck)and when all the smoke cleared, I still couldnt run anything. My advice is to not spend another dime on the junk you have now, its not worth it. Save your money and get a computer thats at LEAST 500 mhz and with at LEAST 120 ram. Here in the U.S., you can get brand new computers practically free if you sign up for three years with an ISP. If youre in Europe they must have similar deals. Look into it. Once you see what your new comp can do you'll wonder why you wasted so much time on the old one.

Oh and uh, personally, I prefer the running around dressed as a viking bit:D

Unless you want to uninstall Win98, all you can really do is make sure you have minimal programs running in the background (shut down everything in the tray, close your virus detector, etc.) while playing, and always reboot immediately beforehand. If even this doesn't work, it's gotta be a hardware problem.

I reach it... Just 4000 to reach BiB record... :)

Congratulations SIR. May I have the honor of being the first to salute you! (salutes crisply)
Wow, cant believe you can run it ok with 200mhz. I never looked at the minimum requirements for EU. Even without graphics to speak of, theres still alot going on in EU. My old 150 would probably lock up by January 2nd 1492.
Hope I dont sound like a computer snob. Ive only got an 800mhz now. The stuff on the market today is way ahead of me too. We'll all probably need pentium5s to run EU3 or EU4

Have you tried running the game without music?

Point to you EU shotrcut and rightclick on it, then select "Properties". In the the "TARGET" field, you should see something like that: "D:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis\europa.exe"

add a space at the end and type "nomusic".
Try this and tell me how it goes please. (Alternatively, you may already have a shortcut that mentions "NO MUSIC", I just found out :)

I have seen that you posted a message in the support forum, have you perform all the steps I recommended for a complete de-installation in the same message?

Thnx guys for all the tips. I tampered a little bit with some system files last night and I got the game running...well I was able to surf around the world and check on everything and nothing (yeah go ahead figure that sentence out!)
:D
but still, that darn clock wouldn't change the date! And of course after awhile that stupid machine started "thinking" it sounds like a cat being trapped in a dishwasher. Yuck! But I'll try your tips guys thnx for trying to help me. But I don't think I will buy new graphics card or upgrade my ram. I thinks it's better to save that for a new computer. Right? Right?!
So I'll try that save-reload tips...otherwise it's off to the computer store. I want my EU to run properly on a machine that atleast fulfill the minimun requirments. I want! I want! well..of to battle my computer once again. Oh and Thnx alot EVERYONE! If it doesn't work I just blame it one the one-armed man...:p

Awwww, man. I was a major once, but then the war ended (or they changed the forum rules) and I got demoted down to a 2nd Lt. I'm working my way back up, though.

Congrats, Major.

I noticed recently that the number of my posts dropped from 207 to 200. Was there a rule change? Not that I post for volume.

Sola;)

Sola,

I notice you've been involved a lot in the "Age and Gender" thread. Someone moved that thread to the "Off Topic" forum. You don't get credit for that. May be when the program keeps track of that.

Just by following the forum and observing who says what (especially you), I can see that you must be a very interesting person with a very interesting background. :p

Cus!
