Since I got the game (almost 2 years now), I've always had this issue. Basically, the sound effects (music tune that plays when an event pops up, all the clicking & ticking sounds when you click/press anything, alert notifications, the ambient voices, the religion tab music... pretty much all sounds except for the actual OST music. They'll begin to fade in & out. Sometimes they'll recover, sometimes they'll continue fading in & out, sometimes I'll wind up playing in total silence (except w/ the OST playing). Some sounds stay at full volume, while others fade. Then the fading starts becoming dynamic, and continuously changes volume for each sound. It's like some gremlin is messing w/ my audio volume settings, as I'm playing.
I've learned to work around it by 'not clicking too fast'... because I believe overlapping sound effects are what usually trigger the problem. But once the problem starts, you never really know what's going to happen... it goes on a long audio glitch journey & no trip is identical to another. Not uncommon for this to start happening within 5 minutes of playing. I usually tolerate it until I wind up playing in silence... then I have to restart. B/c you don't realize how much you rely on the audio cues in this game, until they're all silent.
Anyway, I've always been dealing with this, and it only happens in this game. Just curious if anyone else experiences this. I try not to get jealous when watching streams of other players.... "wow, must be nice to not have audio issues."
And no, I'm not on Linux. Win 10. I actually wanted to be a Linux user, and couldn't do it... b/c the audio just didn't work at all on my PC. If I were a software engineer that knew how to fix my own driver issues, I'd still be a Linux user. But alas, I need a team of people at Microsoft to do it for me. (you get what you pay for)
But again, it's only this game. Aside from this, I have zero audio issues on this rig.
