Armageddon unplayable after Windows updates

I downloaded HOI 3 back in September but could never really get into it like HOI 2, so after a few attempts at a game, I gave up and decided to start playing HOI 2: Armageddon again (at least until Arsenal of Democracy is available). The problem is, now HOI 2 Doomsday nor Armageddon will run no matter what I try, even after uninstalling and reinstalling.

I was playing HOI 2 Armageddon just fine less than 3 months ago on the same machine I have today. I have made no changes other than the automatic Windows updates that force themselves through every so often.

I have tried all the tricks in the forum. I have turned off UAC, I have run the game as an administrator, I have run the game in Windows XP SP2 compatability mode, I have updated my video drivers to the latest available versions according to my manufacturer's website, I have even tried tweaking my video settings in different expirements, all to no avail.

I have looked at trying to rollback my DirectX to 9.0c from the current DirectX 11 on my machine now (I think the version was part of one of the Windows automatic updates). However, it does not appear to be possible for someone with my limited technical ability to get rid of DirectX 11 in favor of an older version.

Can anyone help? I would really love to be able to play Armageddon again.

My system stats are as follows:

Dell Studio XPS 435MT
Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
4.00 GB RAM
64 bit OS

Using Windows Vista Home Premium SP2

Video Card is ATI Radeon HD 4800 series (with most recent drivers)
Sound card is ATI high definition audio device

DirectX 11

I am trying to run any and all versions/patches of HOI 2 Doomsday and Armageddon, but none of them will run. I purchased the games from GamersGate, as well as all of the available patches to date. The game(s) will initially load, proceed through the introduction movie, but then CTD when trying to initialize globals (on all versions).


Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Similar issue, no solution...yet!

I empathize piratefish. I too have gone back to playing HoI2DD but am running into problems, which may well be due to the dreaded windows updates.

I have two computers, one XP and one Vista, that used to run Doomsday just fine. Now, on both computers, HoI2DD will minimize itself at random times. Then, when Germany annexes Austria in March 38, I get the dreaded CTD.

The only thing that's changed on my systems is windows updates. As is, I cannot play until someone posts fix for this problem.

If anyone has had the same issues and knows the fix, please help. Cheers.

You do not have to rollback. Version 9 and 11 can co-exist fine. Just install 9 as well, because the game will not work without it.

Do you get any other symptoms you could tell me about around the crash? Freezes, color changes, resolution changes, error message?
