Been playing about two years now ( started with 1.07, then 1.08, then the 1.08 betas, and now 1.09 ). I almost exclusively play the Vanilla CG; all comments here only concern SP Vanilla CGs. I am now running Windows XP.

CTD ( Crash to Desktop ) has always been an intermittent, but manageable, issue for me. I auto save every year and when I get the occassional ( I estimate one for every 10 hours of play ) CTD I reload from my last save and get on with my life. Rarely would I get another CTD after reloading, but in any case reloading would eventually get me past the "problem area."

Note: I tend to reboot my system after a CTD.

As of the 01Feb2005 beta patch (for 1.08), though, I have been experiencing a more frustrating "game stopper" type of CTD. I can play a game maybe 25, 50 or 100 years without incident, and then I start getting CTDs when I select the Diplomacy window. If I go back to the autosave of that year I invariably get another CTD within a year or so (I might get through half a year using diplomacy normally and then, bamm!!-CTD when I click the Diplomacy window).

While the game loads fine, it seems that the game file is somehow corrupted.

I tend to save every 10 years or so ( when I do DP clicks ), so I went back to some previous saves 10 to 50 years before in an attempt to continue my campaign. I might play for 5 or 50 years, but all paths/attempts eventually lead back to this same CTD issue.

In this particular game as England, I seem to be getting stuck in the mid 1540s and the late 1470s. There were no English events ready to fire, but had not.

I have had this problem on numerous occasions (at least a dozen), normally I just quit the game. On one of those occasions, I reported it here in the forum (http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195021).
In the past, when searches were enabled, I never saw an threads that described Diplomacy CTDs, so I thought it may have been my system's (Pentium II-350) speed and/or O/S (Win98). But I recently got a Celeron-2100 with XP and I am experiencing the exact same problem.

I was hoping that I would be able to send you one of my "corrupted" game files and we could see if you experience the same phenomena as I do.

PS - I did the basics:

1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

Uninstall Eu2 completely as per post #4 in http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58284 (copy any needed save games elsewhere first). Defrag your hard disk then reinstall Eu2 then 1.09 immediately. If that doesn't help:

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

From post 4 the following is indicated:
...
* Use the uninstall utility provided by Paradox/SF (Start=>Programs=>Paradox Entertainment=>Europa Universalis II=>uninstall.exe)
* My recent test of this left nothing on my system except an empty EU2 folder and the Start shortcuts so I expect most users will experience the same. Delete these and you’re ready for the reinstall.
* Follow the remaining instructions in Uglyduck's method above except for the "Kill All Apps" step since XP needs to run more background. You can find a list of required process here and a good article here.
...
I, after backing up my saved games, uninstalled EU2 ( via Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs ), then I removed the Start/All Programs links, then I emptied the recycle bin, then I defragged, then I looked at post 4 ( I probably should have looked at this post first :eek:o ).
But, after I install the game & 1.09 patch there end up being two Start/All Program groups ( one from Paradox Entertainment and one from Strategy First ); only the Strategy First leads to the uninstall.exe app ( not Paradox Entertainment ).

Since I mucked up this uninstall, I am not sure where to go from here. I have two partitions on my one physical hard drive ( c=boot & d=data ), so I could reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch ( this is what I did when I got the system ).

No, all you should need to do is delete all directories relating to the failed installs/uninstalls, excise the Start menu entries (they don't really matter anyway), and clear out the registry of any mention of EU, Paradox or Strategy 1st.

Defrag and reboot, install EU2 and then 1.09.

I did the above steps, and then loaded a "corrupted" game file and experienced a CTD within 3 to 5 months of play.
Regedit note: While there weren't too many entries with the word "Stategy" in the registry, there were a dozen or two with the word "Paradox." Half of the paradox entries were probably were in reference to the Paradox database system made by Borland. In any case, I deleted all of the registry entries with the words paradox or strategy.

"EU" was more difficult, because regedit was showing me every entry with the eu letter combination; there probably were at least 50. Here I only deleted a couple of entries that looked like they were related to the game; the vast majority of the eu's were in words or variable names.

"EU" was more difficult, because regedit was showing me every entry with the eu letter combination; there probably were at least 50.
My apologies for my lazy typing, of course I was referring to "Europa Universalis".

Not a lot wrong with that directx log except the odd amount of memory in the machine , 238mb. Not only is it a strange number, but it's barely enough to run XP let alone EU2. I suggest you bump it to a minimum of 384mb, preferably 512mb if you can.

Also we have had problems with the Via chipset over the years; even though your drivers are relatively recent it's still worth checking for newer ones.

This is a typical case of so called unifiied memory use. In other words, the amount of video RAM (16 MB in this case) is deducted from the total amount of installed RAM. My bet is that 256 MB is installed. After the video hardware has initialised, Windows no longer sees the full amount, as the amount set aside for video use is shielded by the chipset.
