Have any of you tried the HoI2 mod Kaiserreich? :D

Do you Paradox guys play your own games using any unofficial mods?

Fredrik answered this in a recent interview. (must login to see the whole interview)

Q: One of the titles you announced at the convention was Magna Mundi - a new title that started life as a popular mod for one your key games, Europa Universalis III. How did that deal come about?

Fredrik Wester:
I look a lot at what others are doing in this business, and I'm impressed by a couple of other development and publishing companies. Among them is Steam - Valve is a great company, and they've done business for a long time. When you see how their product portfolio evolved and they got a dominating niche in their space - which is far bigger than ours - they got help from mod teams as well.

Look at Left4Dead, Counter-Strike - all the big games that originally come from Half-Life - so we started asking what we could do along those lines with the Europa Universalis franchise. We looked at the different mods, contacted some teams - Magna Mundi is by far the most popular mod, and from our perspective it's quite a different game from EUIII.

A lot of the mods are just extra stuff, or graphical improvements or whatever, but MM has something to offer to the gamers that EUIII can't do. So we asked Carlos, who's the brain behind MM if he could actually make a game that was good enough to put in a box and ship to stores. Of course, he said yes...

Then we asked him for a game design - if we gave him a budget that was x hundred thousand Euros, what would he do with it? That's how it started, and we discussed it for 3-4 months - then development started in October last year. We hope to have it some time next year - we'll see, it's a new team, a new thing for us, but a very interesting opportunity, because our engine is just as moddable as, for example, the Valve Source engine.

So I would imagine they played the mod before hand. :)

About the Custom Avatars.
There may be a way soon.

I have been kicking around the Idea of the order of Paradox Knights.
membership in which at a high enough rank would grant the use of a custom avatar.
To get to that level would probably require rendering a significant service to Staff member, so don't get too excited about it.

What about making a big mod for one of the Paradox games ? :eek:o :D

I'd sure love to get my custom avatar back :p

Why not?

Should be obvious. ;)

Why should the GameDesigner or the Programmers of a Game use Mods? They would change the main game, if they think..it lacks something. People play Mods when they want another Game-Feeling or something big changed.

And when the Paradox Crew wants to change something more then just in a patch....they do an Addon. ;). So...yes...Semper Fi will be the newest Paradox Mod of HoI3.

I hope Paradox mods the Diplomacy also in HoI3, into something more historic....or at least something more plausible.

Just wondered if they don't check for ideas &:c from mods at all?

Kaisereich and ol' IGC are prime examples.

Well i bet sometimes they try out one of the bigger mods....if they have enough time.....and maybe adopt some good ideas for a next Addon....or a Sequel. Not sure...but could be.

Not really..

I really don't look at usermods, except for when modders as for help with problems.

:D

May i ask.....is it because it feels for you like a "Sacrilege" if somebody tries to change the Game Feeling you created in months of work....or is it more because you just lack the time to test it.

Given the help given to modders, i'd say the latter ;)
