What determines the chances of success of an assassination attempt. It seems to me to be mostly luck.

I know the intrigue of my spymaster has something to do with it but even at 17 trying to kill a kid with a intrigue of 1 I still fail and get caught.

So am I missing something or is it mostly based on luck?

Your court's combined intrigue (ruler + spymaster) compared to your target's.
The intrigue of the court your target is in decides, not that of the target character. So if you want to kill a child, first kill the spymaster in the court he is in (and pause, or the AI will immediately assign a new one).

Luck ;)

In pseudo-math it's (your court intrigue) - (their court intrigue), with the higher number, the more chance your attempt will succeed. There is always a chance it will fail though, even if it's 40 to 0.

Because you have a far better chance of killing the target if you first take out the spy master, since his or her intrigue is added to the court intrigue to see if the attempt is successful.
Usually the target costs more to kill than the spy master would, so it's cheaper to first kill them, then your actual target.

I usually find prestige and zeal loss a bigger problem than the actual costs of the assassination. The chance of killing the spymaster is equal to the chance of killing the king straight away. Therefore killing your mark straight away will cost less in zeal and prestige than killing the spy master first.

Ugh. After preparing my young Duke of Saxony since near-birth ( 2 y/o ) for 20 years to become the next defender of the faith (he replaced his insane father, another young Duke), he.. was assassinated, JUST LIKE THIS GRANDFATHER. Right after, massive Syria declared war and look ready to squash my cities on the shores of Jerusalem. Bad luck has struck once more. :`(

( Gosh, I love this game. )
