I've played a good number of IGC's, but only recently tried a muslim IGC besides Turkey. I decided to use Algiers, normal/normal with IGC 2.1, 1.09 patch, and I played, did quite well for myself, ended up with all of North Africa, Nubia and Ethiopia and a good portion of Italy (northern). So my question is, is there anything I can do to get tech advancement even close to those of my European counterparts? I spent all my monthly allowance on research pretty much the whole game; but still at the end I was down by about 15-20 tech levels to everyone else. I couldn't fight any wars against European opposition, since I'd need to outnumber them about 7-1 to get anywhere. If I had done poorly in the game, not having any provinces and whatnot, I'd understand, but it seems a little ridiculous to be that far behind when I was doing that well. (5th place...)

I guess what I was thinking is that I had two big things going against me: 1, obviously, the fact that I was Sunni muslim. The only other thing I could think of that would set me back THAT far was the fact that most of the provinces I controlled were barren and desolate, like the Atlas mountains, the Nubian desert and whatnot. Anybody else have any ideas on this/what could be done or whatever? I mean, obviously I could set my tech-group to Catholic or whatever, but I mean, it still just sits wrong with me that I ended up that far behind... I'm not saying I thought I should be 1-1 with the European nations, but to be 20 tech levels behind? I don't know...

I'm not sure what the math+game mechanics of the situation is, but I guess my follow up to that is what are the weights of those two effects? I don't know the calculations going on well enough to know. I had a huge country of low yield provinces and was in the muslim tech group. How would you weigh those against each other? Does the low yield province issue have a big effect, or would you say it's mainly just the fact I'm muslim? Because I could certainly avoid #1 (I.E. not annexing nubia, ethiopia, other countries made up of mostly useless provinces)...

Tech increase cost is relative the number of provinces.
Thus a lot of low income provinces with cities make tech advance much slower since they add cost but generate low income.

thats why the small german city states was long in fron in scince in the first versions

That's what I thought, Huszics... Any idea what kind of impact it has? Is it minimal in my example, or could it really be a big deal? It doesn't matter that much, since the IGC is over by now, but I was just curious if I ever try using one of the Muslim provinces again...

Check out my beta FAQ, basicly all I know about this is in there (though remember it might have been tweaked in 1.09).
