When you go into battle against another country does it show the battle? can you control your troops in the battle?

It shows the battle, but you can't control its outcome.

It is influenced by location of the battle, numbers of generals of both sides, morale of men, officier's command, proportion of infantry/cavalry/artillery, technological advances and fortifications.

It's like in real life: When you are a conselor of the King, you send troops, but it is officiers that do the job. Not you. Unless you have Hermes' sandals. :)

I don't have Herme's sandals. :(

I told them to look for Herme's sandals and what do they bring me? These *%$#@ glass slippers and some malnourished wench! What good is that?

are the battle scenes pretty good graphics? do the soldiers use rifles eventually? my question mainly are the battle scenes pretty cool?

Well, battles are highly abstracted. You basically watch an animation on the main game map where two soldiers (representing armies) are fighting it out.
On the info section to the left on the screen you can watch the total numbers of infantry/cavalry/artillery/naval vessels rapidly decrease as your army or fleet gets crushed.

Here is what a naval battle in the English Channel looks like: http://www.europa-universalis.com/screen.asp?img=3

Exciting enough for ya? hehe :p

gunner18,
I think you're missing the point of EU. It is isn't a real-time tactics game or a game with flashy graphics and nothing else. The fun is in managing an historical country and experiencing its successes (and failures) as your own. If you're involved with the game then major battles are always dramatic as you anxiously await the outcome. 'Cool' battle scenes are unnecessary.

But don't forget that the little battle scene does have quite a bit of information...
As was asked above, your soldiers dress reflects your techlevel, or rather when you reach certain specific levels you get a new sprite. If several nations are involved you can see all of them on the field with the correct sprite and flags...
But if you look carefully in the picture of the seabattle, you'll see up in the right corner and in the lower left you see a flame of sorts with a number next to it... That means the ships are in the fire phase and the numbers signify the total of techlevel, commander (admiral(s) in this case), other special bonus you might have... While the arrow in the middle between the shields signify who is winning...

No, I am not missing out on what EU is. I knew that it wasnt a WAR game, but historical simulation. Thanks for the information and screenshot
