I see nothing wrong in those files to explain this. I take it the game used to work on this machine at some point? If so, can yu identify what change or update since then seemed to trigger this problem?

The actual crash is here:

But I'm afraid that doesn't really tell me much about the cause. If you hadn't already done a clean reinstall that would have been my first idea!

Thanks for getting back to me. It first happened about 3 months ago, but was too busy to report the issue at the time.

The game used to work fine on my machine up until then, as I haven't made any changes to my system during that time.

One issue I was getting occasionally before this happened was when loading the main menu, the box detailing what expansion is available that appears at the bottom of the screen, wouldn't load and if I tried to load a game or start a new game, the system would get stuck on infinite loading screen and not respond.

The only way I was able to get it working was to use task manager to end the process before it got to that point and reload the game. This would mean I would have to do it a one or two times before it would load the box and I would be able to load the game.

I recently tried the clean re-install method outlined by user Edmon, but no success. Is there a further step I need to take with that process with the current version, as I believe that guide was for v1.1.

Here's my process:

- Remove the game from Steam (uninstall)
- Manually delete all these files and folders, if still there:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BattleTech\
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\ (To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\USER_ID\637090\
(first move the \remote\C#\SGS#\ folder elsewhere to keep your save games)

- Install the game again
- add steam.exe and BattleTech.exe to the Whitelist of your antivirus app, whatever it is

Thank you for getting back to me again AndrewT, really appreciate the support.

So I followed your process above on uninstalling and reinstalling Battletech, added it to the whitelist and launched the game, didn't touch a mouse or keyboard button, and still had it crash to the desktop during the HBS title screen.

Something I tried was removing the ModSample folder from the mods folder in the My Game directory as I noticed it mention in the crash report to see if removing it from that directory did anything, while keeping it in My Docs in case I need to add it back in.

Unfortunately it didn't help, but I did notice that when I launched the game and was moving the mouse around, it would get through the opening titles to the cinematic.

I let that run through and managed to get to the main menu (huzzah!), however the second I moved the mouse this time it crashed. It's got me stumped, that's for sure.

So far as I know this is unique to you/your machine, so like you I'm pretty stumped as well.

What if you make a new Windows user on this machine, log into Windows as that and play then? Same issue?

Well this is interesting.

So I made a new Windows local account, ran Steam and launched the game and BAM! It worked. So that's the first good bit.

This made me realize that there were less programs running at the same time as Battletech. So I deleted the new account and moved back to my original account.

Closed all the other applications running (including Origin Launcher, Discord and AIDA64) and launched Battletech again, lo and behold it works!

Restart computer, close Origin first, crashed again. Closed Discord, and it worked.

So it seems that Discord is somehow causing issues. Odd.

The main takeaway from this is that I can play again, hooray!

Thanks again for the assistance AndrewT, super appreciated. Time to stomp some Locusts.

Hmmm, Discord, okay. You may find that just disabling the Discord overlay would have done the trick.

Anyway glad you got there!
