Despite working without a hitch for 40+ hours the game now crashes to desktop shortly after starting a mission. I have tried starting a new game for both campaign and career mode but the same happens. Have reinstalled game. No hardware changes have been made. Note this is using Xbox games pass PC as a platform and several of the files required below are not in the paths described. chkdsk found and fixed an error, mdsched was clean.

Neither of those output logs have any crash in them, unfortunately. Which tends to point to something outside the game, although it's not at all clear what!

While there's nothing that explicitly points to it, I notice you have a very new nVidia driver - could it have been that update which triggered this? Can you try reverting to the previous version you had?

There isn't an obvious way to do that from the GeForce console and I'm not sure I'd want to be locked out of the latest drivers anyway. I noticed today a lot "Disk surprise removed" errors and in my device manager it looks like the Xbox App has created 127 (!?!) xvd drives for reasons I don't understand. I wonder if the two issues are related. After my original post it did work fine for a couple of hours.

It was only for the purpose of diagnosis, not intended as a permanent thing. If that helped you would then contact nVidia with a bug report.

That does sound odd, I agree. What if you run the game from the MS Store app instead of the Xbox app?
