It's a neat idea that the techs you research are random, but the techtree itself seems a bit boring to me. The tech names and flavour text seem like an afterthought and I'd like more modifiers on technologies. I feel that a Vicky style techs with inventions would fit into Stellaris really well for both flavour and mechanics.

To me it seems a little strange that an interstellar empire is researching something called "Ripper Cannons" instead of, let's say "Frictionless materials", "Small Scale Gravitic Manipulation" and "Advanced Zero-G Cooling" that give you a chance to invent said cannons when you have researched them all or just 2. It would also make the techs a lot more interconnected and "realistic". And giving techs/inventions more smallish bonuses to variety of things would also enhance the feel(both flavor and mechanics) of the game. For example having things that give bonuses to ships also give bonuses to ground armies. Now it feels like none of the weapon technologies give any benefit to ground troops, because F those guys on the ground, we are the glorious space fleet and we don't give our weapons and toys to dirty ground pounders.

Are there any techtree changing mods in the works? And if not, is modding techs and events(for inventions) easy enough that even I could do it?
