Longtime EU player here, but this is my first attempt at an AAR. No narrative/story, just gameplay and my thoughts.

I chose Burgundy because I wanted a relatively easy country as I'm still learning the changes of EU4, plus Burgundy is one of my favorite countries and in an interesting location. I enjoy the French region, but France is just too easy, and Burgundy also has good interactions with England and the HRE.

I don't have that many screenshots early on, as I wasn't sure if I wanted to do an AAR or not. I apologize, but I'll try to detail everything interesting that happened, even if no screenshot.

Settings:

I know, as Burgundy, my first and most important goal, over all else, should be knocking out France. France starts out as weak as they're ever going to be, and if I leave them alone and instead gobble OPM to my east, I know I'll regret it.

I have an excellent military leader in my king, and an army roughly 1/2 to 2/3 as large as the French. My manpower isn't nearly as good as the French, so if the conflict drags on, I'll really be in trouble. On the other hand, my provinces are very wealthy and I largely control Antwerp's trade. I've never really used mercenaries before, but Burgundy seems set up well to use them; the major advantage to them would be not only extra forces, but conservation of my manpower (so that I don't finish any war with France crippled).

To start, I try to find any allies I can who could help against France. Brittany and Savoie both are willing to ally with me, so I do so. A short while later Bavaria and Bohemia both indicate interest in an alliance; while they may not help much with France, I'm hopeful that an alliance with these two may discourage the other power I need to be concerned about (Austria) from any funny business, so I accept.

I don't have a CB against France right away, so I decide to let them fight the English some, and take a Mission to liberate Bar from Provence. I DOW them shortly thereafter, Sav and Brittany joining in, and move my troops in. Shortly after, though, I notice this:

It looks like somehow, the English have scored a major victory against the French - that battered stack of 5 is actually the remnants of the greater part of the French army, the stack of 19 infantry they start with. I can't let an opportunity like this pass by, so I do something I almost never do - I declare war against the French with no CB.

I manage to completely destroy that French stack, and the English continue their upsets by largely handling the rest of the French forces. Along with my starting army, which I split in two, I hire a substantial (10-12) stack of mercenaries, and between the English/Portuguese and myself and allies, we proceed to dismantle France - by far the easiest that has ever been and, I think, in part to a good deal of luck, not the least of it being the continued survival of my King.

Meanwhile, in my war against Provence, Bar defects to me via event, which allows me to take the province of Provence in peace. Unfortunately, since I don't have a land connection, I can't core it, so I regret the decision somewhat.

Finally, I accept a reasonable peace with France, taking two provinces NE of Ile-de-France and forcing them to release Auverne. The English accept peace shortly after, taking Poitou and possibly demanding other concessions. A massive rebellion will rock France immediately after, leading to the release of Guyenne and later Dauphine and leaving France with only four provinces. However, I'm otherwise occupied, because...

A massive coalition, led by Austria and including England (!) declares war on me. Austria is angry because I refused to cede my "unlawful" HRE territory of Bar - pshaw, I say! I'm very fortunate the war with France went so well and my manpower is still intact - otherwise I'd be in real trouble.

The conflict drags on - I'm able to destroy most of the forces that venture into my lands, but not take the fight to anyone of significance, really. Austria is stubborn in refusing any good peace deals, and I don't like the idea of this war dragging out too long.

So at a loss for what else to do, I accept a peace that sees England cede Calais to France (who I'm now less scared of than England).

Sometime during all of this, my King dies, his son inherits, and France conquers the two remaining provinces of Provence. This is actually a good thing for me - it means I can release Provence as my vassal, and get rid of the overextension from Provence, although they take Bar with them as well. In the meantime, I conquer Gelre and Berg. This causes everyone in Europe to despise me, and soon I'm facing a coalition of pretty much everyone, including England, France, and Austria. Soon after, Utrecht declares war on me, as leader of the coalition.

I quickly conquer them and force concessions from the coalition, most notably the release of the provinces France conquered to Provence, who is my vassal. In retrospect, I now feel this was too gamey - I think I should have forced a white peace instead. On the other hand, I don't think it makes sense in this time period for the massive coalition that faced me to even really exist, so I don't know. I still regret it, though.

Currently, France has declared war on England, who is suffering through the war of the roses. They've occupied the mainland English territory, and Scotland is ripping through the non-rebel-occupied English territory. Aragon conquered all of Dauphin but suffers from repeated rebellions, which I covertly support. Oddly enough, one of the rebellions occupied 2 of the 3 provinces, crossed the border to Auvignon, seized it, and immediately created Dauphine, but only with the province of Avignon - not quite sure what happened there.

This is how things stand currently, both for myself and Europe as a whole. I took Innovative as my idea, since it ties nicely into all of Burgundy's strengths. I almost took Administrative for the first time, since it works so well with mercenaries - I may yet as my second idea.

From here on out, I'll try to do a better job of having more/better screenshots, and noting more things, since I know I'm going to try for a real AAR. Please let me know what you think so far - this thing is a lot of work, and if everyone hates it, I won't do it :)

Thanks!

Just...don't die. Burgundy always seems to have their king die a horrible horrible death and get divided up.

Nice job so far! Incidentally I played a game as France last night and dismantled Burgundy...so I guess this evens everything out!

This is an event that only the AI gets, if the king dies without heir.

Nice AAR, and you could remove your provinces from the HRE, if you have them cored, which means Austria (or whoever is the emperor) can't ask for unlawful territory.

Well...I'm not sure if it balances out because I...er...sort of formed France...

I was kind of embarrassed to, but the advantages were too significant. And I retain the Burgundian ideas and whatnot, so...I just think of it as New France! :)

Actually, I think I really mismanaged this playthrough pretty badly after this point, and only sort of muddled my way through. But on the other hand, that's more realistic! Also, for whatever reason, I really want to do Poland for my next playthrough - they seem really interesting.

Anyway, taking up where I left off:

I decide to annex Provence, and their four juicy provinces.

As I'm doing that, the House of York emerges triumphant - unfortunately this means that France gets all the provinces they had occupied in France.

Which means - time to beat up France while I still can!

After beating up the French fairly easily, I have a decision to make. Taking provinces costs a lot and incurs a lot of AE, whereas forcing France to release countries (that I can gobble later) is a lot cheaper, and no AE. In the end, I decide to take two provinces so I can connect the soon-to-be-annexed Provencian provinces.

Time to spend a bunch of my saved money upgrading my infrastructure!

The other benefit to taking those provinces is that I've split the French, and can now support rebellions in their southern half.

Urp!

Well - not terrible, and better than his mediocre father. And his son seems pretty darn good!

Another war with France, integration with Provence, and annexation of Avignon.

Then a war with the Dishonorable Scum! I grab a province and force release of another.

Hey, Portugal wants to be my ally? That could actually be useful!

Then the start of things going off the track. I notice Savoy, who I'm still allies with, has the potential for me to claim their throne, so I do so. I attempt to Declare War to enforce my claim - I know that their will be a huge alliance, including Castille and Austria, against me, but I figure if I can conquer Savoy quickly I can force the war to end.

The war is a virtual stalemate. Four years later, my treasury is drained, my manpower is at zero, and I don't have enough left to push on to enforce my claim. At this point, every able-bodied man in Iberia, France, and especially Savoy is dead. No doubt the Savoyan peasants will curse my name for generations to come. The best I can hope for is a white peace.

More to come!

I stupidly left my troops in Provence -_-

So I try to butter up Savoy (remember the people I just butchered mercilessly by the score? Them) to get military access. That goes a little...better than I expect. Either I have the world's best diplomatic corps, or every Savoyan who remembers the Burgundian atrocities is dead from the starvation and plague that no doubt followed, because:

Another war with France goes by easily, leaving them only with their capital and Poitou.

In the meantime, Portugal has a new king. Note what happens if he dies?

Heh. Yeah, sure. All that has to happen is Portugal's 15 year old God-King made flesh to die without fathering an heir. Sure.

Also, something I've never seen before - go go Bulgaria!

I add Diplomatic as my next idea - I always have a lot of left over points if I'm not a naval power, and I can use the faster claims, cheaper coring, and other things.

I decide to finish off France, and here's where I make my first huge blunder. Not only do I underestimate the coalition I'll have to face (and Austria grabs the lead, so I have to beat them, not just France) but I'm pretty sure I didn't wait for the truce to expire, dropping my stability to -3. Not great. Not only does this result in a bunch of revolts, but also a Palace Coup! Shame and dishonor!

Fortunately my heir is more than qualified to guide the great and stupid nation of Burgundy! I manage to fight on against the coalition until I can annex Ile-de-France, leaving France with Poitou. Meanwhile:

Religious intolerance. Ugh. I have a smattering of Protestants in my country, and they seem to be gaining strength. I go with tolerance, because that's just the kind of enlightened ruler I am.

Savoy manages to get its butt kicked in a war with the Italian powers, which is just dandy, because I can still claim its throne. What? It worked out so well the first time! Don't look at me like that.

This seems familiar...

The war is a disaster. The combined coalition forces crush me, and although my manpower isn't exhausted, there's little chance of recovering given how poorly the war goes from the very beginning. I'm forced to give up over a thousand ducats to prevent the coalition from pressing its advantage.

To compound this, for some reason I decide, although only at most a third of my nation is Protestant, that now is the time to convert!

This is pretty much the worst possible decision I could make. Not only does the lack of religious unity make it incredibly difficult to fix my stability, leading to rebellions everywhere, a huge part, including all of the Netherlands, is now a minority religion, which means all my wealthy provinces now provide a ton less money than they used to. I can barely afford to maintain my army (I can't, really).

Five years later, this happens:

Now, I'm pretty bummed, because the heir I had in line was decent, 5/3/2 or something. The skills for the heir produced by...erm...illicit activities are ok - 5/2/1 - but I decide with the state my country is in right now, I can't afford to have a Monarch with low legitimacy. That turns out to be a pretty good decision.

All hail the divine one! Grow up quick, son. We're gonna need you. More on the years of chaos later, but probably tomorrow evening - I start a new job tomorrow.

Wow, you've really had some ups and downs. I do like AARs where people have to work for their wins, even lose at times. Great work, and good luck with the new job!

Sometimes a loss can net a bigger win. Pushing forward in EU4 isn't as relieable a strategy as in CK2!

Nothing is as reliable a strategy as pushing forward in CK2 lol.

Also, kudos to Paradox for the coalition mechanic. I still think it needs tweaking, but it's definitely shining in this playthrough. More coming hopefully tonight, if I can summon the energy.

Edit: Sorry, I'm just too damned tired. I think what I may actually do is play on weekdays, and try to do larger weekly updates on weekends, when for personal reasons I may not be able to play much but will be able to post. So that might work out.

Can Burgundy change to France if it dominates the area? I seem to remember that was possible in earlier EUs. Good progress so far btw!
