I have just researched California class ships, however they won't show up in the ship designer, so you can't upgrade them as you research new techologies. They are buildable at starbases but no way to change the design or upgrade them.

Unfortunately you can't upgrade the hero ships either (Enterprise D/E & Cerritos). They were unlocked with quite some outaded tech for me and unfortunately there is currently no way to upgrade them as you research new tech. It's pretty annoying to have the flagship of the Federation with outdated tech an no way to impove it. Realy hoping there will be a way to upgrade the hero ships in the future.

For me, when I finally researched the Sovereign class ship, the game started upgrading the tech on Enterprise E, I assume unlocking Galaxy class ships will do the same for Enterprise D, but I had already upgrade Enterprise by the time I unlocked Galaxy class ships. But you still can not design the Enterprise, it is locked to whatever the AI is programmed to build, which is unfortunately bad. Combine that with the limitations of not being able to add other ships to the Enterprise fleet, and you have a problem where the ship becomes obsolete from a combat perspective once technologies get to the point where opposing fleets just outperform the lone Enterprise.
