Is it possible to hold both the Shia and Sunni Caliphates? I don't think so, since they are religious head titles, but other characters in the history have done in (namely the Prophet Muhammad) so I was wondering if a player could do so. It would be pretty cool to reunite Islam!

The split between the Shia and Sunni branches didn't occur until after Muhammad's death. I assume it's more practical to represent this by having him hold both Caliphate titles than it would be to create a unique religion in the Islamic branch just to represent the faith before the Prophet's death. The only reason they have the Hellenic and generic pagan faiths in vanilla as far as I can tell is because there's actually a fair number of characters that follow them in the history, namely the Roman emperors for instance. However, in some weird situations it is in theory possible for a character to gain multiple religious head titles, but you need to put a good deal of conscious effort into having this happen and holds no practical purpose beyond potentially an increase in prestige and piety.

I wouldn't now how it can be done, only that it might be possible, sorry. The only thing I can recommend is if you're playing a Sunni character and there's a Shia Caliphate you could make a mini challenge of defeating them and if you manage make them unlanded, type "give_title d_shia [your character's id]" to force receiving the title while making it seem that the wars against your counterpart were to unite the two Caliphates.

Having two different religion head titles is only possible in the history files. It can't be done during actual play.

You sure? In one of these epic cheese playthroughs posted on Reddit a few weeks back a guy managed to heap religious head titles onto religious characters IIRC. I'll see if I can find it.

I'm sure because we made certain it couldn't happen in Plus, yes.
