This was the first thing that I thought of when I saw this game and after learning that planets are made up of tiles it seemed plausible. The full question is, Can I own part of a planet and other people can own the rest? Maybe they have a better part and I can send in my ground forces to take their tiles. Also, I might just own a single city on the planet like an outpost. Just an idea.

I think its plausible, Like how you might of controlled a barony on some county in ck2 through inheritance or w/e. The person in charge will probably just hate you

Why it vould be great for partnerships. I get to mine the advanced space-metals, cause I am better at it, in return I pay a fee and give you a share.

It could be interesting idea if your environmental preferences are implemented. Thus if we meet aliens who are happy in temperatures we find unbearable, then these aliens could be allowed to settle within your planets, effectively increasing economic output and settling above normal pop limit (think aliens who find Antarctic to be comfy). If, however both races have similar preferences, competition will introduce friction between population.

In addition, war or poor policies toward the originator alien faction, will cause asliens of the same phenoptype to become unhappy, possibly starting an insurgency or even a full rebellion on your planet.

Or dump your waste products on their side of the planet to anger them :D
I thought it is a patron client relationship. I.e the mighty guy lets you use a % on some of his planets. Or more like a symbiosis the mining specialists mine on the militrists planet etc.

There is no reason to let someone one your planet if you are hostile to begin with.

The impression I'm getting is that planets are the basic "unit" of Stellaris like provinces in EU or individual holdings in CK (see: the outliner in released screenshots). They mentioned different slots for production but I think these will be more like EU4 building slots or Vicky factories than something that can be divided up between different states. Maybe there will be some kind of diplomatic or economic "sharing" of a planet or its resources but I doubt we'll see planets divided territorially.

Reactions:
The ideia I have is that Planets will be single units, like icedt729 said, you might perhaps have the option to deal with planet natives, with the option to:
  • Assimilate/Enslave (good old conquer mechanic with diferent pop or trade bonuses)
  • Co-Exist (Share the planet, depending on the race you might get good or bad bonuses, but in game mechanics you control the planet)
  • Protectorate (like in EU4 make a protectorate out of the minor race, you protect them and in return they contribute to your trade power or something)

Why would you want to share? Wouldn't you rather rule the entire planet? The only reason I could see a person wanting to share is A) You're less aggressive then most Alien Races or B)You've only started invading the planet and need more time to build up an army to take it over completely.

On the screenshot with space map we have a border of Kingdom of Yondarim and Themlar Union. There's one star which seems to be inside both borders. I wonder if it means that this system is shared.
